Everything to know about Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, including why Joey Chestnut isn't participating
The Fourth of July means plenty of hot dogs will be on the grill, but perhaps none more than on Coney Island.
Coney Island has been the home of the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest just about every year since 1972 at the original Nathan’s.
Its popularity has skyrocketed in recent years, notably because of the dominance of two of the best eaters ever.
Takeru Kobayashi broke the world record for most hot dogs eaten in 12 minutes, nearly doubling the previous record of 25.5.
It was Kobayashi’s first of six straight titles, but Joey Chestnut dethroned him in 2007.
Chestnut broke the record by eating 66 dogs and buns, which kick-started a dominant run. He’d wind up winning each contest until getting upset in 2015 by Matt Stonie.
But Chestnut reclaimed the crown the following year and has won every year since.
This year, however, there will be a new champion because Chestnut will not be on Coney Island.
Last month, Chestnut signed a brand partnership deal with Impossible Foods, a rival of Nathan’s. Major League Eating ruled that as long as Chestnut was partnered with a Nathan’s rival, he would not be permitted in the competition.

Despite Chestnut saying he was hoping something would work out, nothing ever did, thus the reason he won’t be in New York.
He will, however, compete in another hot dog eating contest in El Paso, Texas, which will be livestreamed at 5 p.m. ET, nearly five hours after the Nathan’s contest ends.
With Chestnut out of the race, sportsbooks say it’s a four-man race between Geoffrey Esper, James Webb, Nick Wehry and Patrick Bertoletti. Esper is the favorite at -110, while Webb is +140, Wehry is +300 and Bertoletti is +600.
The goal is simple: eat as many hot dogs (and buns) as you can in 10 minutes (it went from 12 to 10 in 2008). Win, and receive $10,000.
Condiments, water and other beverages are allowed to make the eating easier, although typically, no one opts for condiments.
The contest will be broadcast on ESPN and begins at noon ET.

Amtrak restores rail service between New York and Boston after lightning strike causes power outage
NEW YORK (AP) – Amtrak rail service between New York and Boston was restored after a lightning strike was believed to have caused a circuit breaker to malfunction, the rail service announced Saturday night.
The malfunction caused a power outage on all tracks between Penn Station in New York and Union Station in New Haven, Connecticut, beginning Saturday afternoon.
Amtrak announced the service had been restored in a statement posted on its website.
Evening trains between Boston and Virginia were operating on schedule Saturday. Most trains were expected to be on schedule Sunday, although some Sunday train services were cancelled and others were expected to operate on a modified schedule, the company said.
Customers with reservations on affected trains would be accommodated on trains with similar departure times or on other days, the rail service said Saturday.
Amtrak said it would waive additional charges for customers attempting to change reservations.

Steelers Star Named Top Trade Option
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers are working out contract negotiations with defensive tackle Cam Heyward, but despite the captain showing up for Organized Team Activities and minicamp, there’s not too much optimism a deal gets done before the season.
If an extension doesn’t get done, the Steelers will have a decision to make on whether or not they’ll let Heyward walk next offseason or move on from him early. If they chose to make a trade – which doesn’t feel likely right now – they’ll probably have takers.
Pro Football Network believes it’ll be their easiest move to make, naming Heyward their top trade option heading into training camp.
“There is no denying that Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman Cameron Heyward will be remembered as an all-time great in franchise history. Yet the Steelers could opt to trade him as he heads into the final season of his final contract. Heyward had just two sacks last season, and Pittsburgh would save $16 million by trading him in 2024,” PFN writes.
Heyward is expected to be back to his normal self in 2024. 2023 was lost due to injury, and looking at his stats from a year where he underwent surgery isn’t an actual expectation on what’s to come.
Chances are the Steelers don’t move on from Heyward this offseason. The two sides will continue to negotiate, but even if a deal doesn’t get done, the Steelers will need their captain for a 2024 Super Bowl run. On Heyward’s side, unless he’s going to head to another contender, winning a Super Bowl is likely at the top of his list – and winning one in Pittsburgh would mean more than with another team.
If a split is coming, it’s coming in 2025. For now, no movement is expected to happen.
