Dog found dead in Willimantic River
A dog was found dead on the ice in the Willimantic River on Friday, according to the Willimantic Police Department.
The Windham Animal Control was notified after a report of a small dog lying motionless near the center of the river close to the waterfall.
Emergency personnel responded and found that the dog was already dead and had been laying on a cardboard box on unstable ice.
While the police and fire department worked to create a plan to rescue the dog, the ice broke apart, and the dog was carried downstream.
It is still unknown how the dog ended up in the river, and what the causes of death were.
Animal control and the Willimantic Police Department are currently investigating the incident and are looking to find out who was involved and how the dog entered the water.
Anyone with information can call the police department at 860-465-3135.

Major snowstorm dumps more than 18″ in parts of Connecticut
Heavy snow fell throughout the day Sunday, dumping more than a foot in most of Connecticut, with more to come.
The snow started around 8 a.m. and gained intensity in the afternoon, falling at a rate of 2-3″ per hour. It quickly coated roads and made travel treacherous on state roads.
Gov. Ned Lamont implemented a commercial vehicle travel ban on Connecticut highways at 12 p.m. That remains in effect until further notice.
Along the shoreline, snow is mixing with sleet, but inland it is expected to remain all snow.
The heavy snow and sleet will taper off after 10 p.m. Sunday, and there will be intermittent snow and sleet through the overnight. It should be mainly light through the early morning.
A period of snow will redevelop mid-morning and areas could see an additional 1-3″ of fluffy snow, especially in northern Connecticut.
Total snowfall in many towns will be near 18″ by the time it comes to an end. Locally higher totals are possible in places where it stays all snow. The shoreline will end the storm with a foot or possibly a bit more.
Temperatures remain cold overnight and will be in the 20s on Monday.
