Local and state officials will gather at Logan International Airport on Friday to celebrate the opening of four new gates and other improvements at Terminal E while marking the airport’s 100th anniversary.
A new exhibit in the public section of the international terminal, “Boston Logan Looks Back: A Century of Powering What’s Possible,” explores events that shaped the airport over the past century.
Countless celebrities, including Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart, have flown into the airport over the years.
The airport was dedicated to much fanfare on Sept. 8, 1923. Boston Mayor James Michael Curley was in attendance and kicked off a plane race to Boston Light in the harbor, which the Globe described as “thrilling.”

“Boston’s Air Port at Jeffries Point, east Boston was officially opened yesterday — and opened good!” the Globe reported.

The airfield was built on tidal flats by the U.S. Army and was used by the Massachusetts Air Guard and the Army Air Corps in its earliest years, according to a history on Massport’s website.
In 1927, the airport began offering commercial passenger flights between Boston and New York.

On April 15, 1927 Colonial Air Transport began passenger service between Boston and New York. The bus picked passengers up at the Hotel Statler in Boston at 9:15 a.m. and took them to the airport. The airport expanded two years later when 200 acres of land was reclaimed from Boston Harbor. An administration building was added, runways were lengthened, and access roads were paved and landscaped.

In the 1940s, Boston Harbor was filled in again so the airport could expand its footprint, and additional runways and hangars were built. The airport also got a new name.

It was named in memory of Edward Lawrence Logan, a South Boston native who graduated from Boston Latin School, Harvard, and Harvard Law School. He served in the Spanish-American War and commanded the Yankee Division’s 101st Infantry Regiment in World War I. He also served as a judge.
In addition to local and state officials, Massport chief executive officer Lisa Wieland and Ed Freni, Massport’s director of aviation, are scheduled to attend Friday’s grand opening.
“The improvements to Terminal E create an overall better travel experience for passengers by adding four new gates, increasing efficiency throughout the terminal, and elevating amenities such as new dining options,” Massport officials said in a statement. “The area also includes a sensory room for passengers of all ages, making Boston Logan one of a few airports in the U.S. with this type of inclusive space.”

All Amtrak services between New York and Boston have been restored after being suspended for around 7 hours on Saturday. FOX 5 NY’s Duarte Geraldino has the latest.
NEW YORK (AP) – Amtrak rail service between New York and Boston was restored after a lightning strike was believed to have caused a circuit breaker to malfunction, the rail service announced Saturday night.

The malfunction caused a power outage on all tracks between Penn Station in New York and Union Station in New Haven, Connecticut, beginning Saturday afternoon.
Amtrak announced the service had been restored in a statement posted on its website.
Evening trains between Boston and Virginia were operating on schedule Saturday. Most trains were expected to be on schedule Sunday, although some Sunday train services were cancelled and others were expected to operate on a modified schedule, the company said.

Customers with reservations on affected trains would be accommodated on trains with similar departure times or on other days, the rail service said Saturday.
Amtrak said it would waive additional charges for customers attempting to change reservations.
One week after the Boston Celtics captured the 2024 NBA championship, owner Wyc Grousbeck announced that his ownership group, Boston Basketball Partners L.L.C., intends to sell their stakes in the team. Boston Basketball Partners L.L.C. issued a statement regarding the future sale.
“The managing board of the ownership group expects to sell a majority interest in 2024 or early 2025, with the balance closing in 2028, and expects Wyc Grousbeck to remain as the Governor of the team until the second closing in 2028.”
While there is uncertainty regarding who will be the franchise’s next owner, the Celtics’ starting lineup are contracted for the long term. Earlier this week, superstar Jayson Tatum signed a five-year $315 million supermax contract extension. Likewise, Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis all are under contract through the 2026-27 campaign.
Per Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix, Tatum was “shocked” to learn about Wyc Grousbeck’s intentions to sell his stake in the Celtics. Tatum “hopes the foundation and structure doesn’t change” and said “what we built what we have, it’s a great thing. I don’t want things to change.”

Next season, Tatum will be entering his eighth season as a member of the Celtics. The five-time All-Star was an essential part of Boston’s recent championship run, as he led the team in points, rebounds, and assists during the postseason.
BOSTON (WHDH) – Boston police have identified the Jamaica Plain man who was fatally shot on Shawmut Avenue early Friday morning.
Officers responding to a reported shooting in the area of 618 Shawmut Ave. around 1:30 a.m. found Warren Julien, 40, suffering from a gunshot wound, according to Boston police.
He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Boston Police Department’s Homicide Unit is actively reviewing the facts and circumstances surrounding this incident. Anyone with information is strongly urged to contact the Boston Police Homicide Unit ay 617-343-4470.
