Air rifles are used for big game in many states. Is Wisconsin next?
GAYLORD, Mich. – The vary at Northland Sportsmen’s Membership close to Gaylord was “scorching.”
Chris Turek of Traverse Metropolis seemed by the telescopic sight on prime of a .30 caliber rifle, settled the crosshairs on the paper goal 50 yards downrange, flicked off the security and pulled the set off.
“Pffft.”
That was no misfire. It was the sound of compressed air from a cylinder on the rifle propelling a slug with sufficient power for searching white-tailed deer and plenty of different large recreation animals.
No smoke, no bang, no recoil.
“Quite a bit to love, that is for certain,” stated Turek, a consultant of the producer of the rifle, FX Airguns of Sweden, and an advocate for the class total.
The category of air rifles is named pre-charged pneumatic, or PCP.
Turek and Brad Bonar of Albion, Indiana, additionally an FX rep, had been demonstrating the merchandise at a breakout capturing vary session throughout the September 2021 annual convention of the Affiliation of Nice Lakes Out of doors Writers.
My expertise with air rifles was restricted to a Sheridan Blue Streak .20 caliber pump that my mother and father had bought for the household throughout my youth.
I used it to good impact amassing grey squirrels for stew and stroganoff and had enjoyable plinking with it within the basement and yard.
However air rifles are usually not authorized for deer searching in Wisconsin; I had by no means seen a “large bore” airgun in individual till that day close to Gaylord.
One of many first issues I discovered was air rifles had been utilized in Europe tons of of years in the past.
Fashions constructed round 1580 are on show in Stockholm, Sweden, in keeping with firearms historian Frederick J. Chiaventone.
Round 1780 a Tyrolean gunsmith named Bartolomeo Girandoni developed a rugged air rifle that was quickly adopted by the Austrian army.
The .46 caliber rifle had a muzzle velocity of 1,000 toes per second and will put a lead ball by a one-inch thick pine board at 100 yards. They known as it a windbuchse, or “wind rifle.”
The Girondoni is greatest recognized within the U.S. as a result of explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark carried the air rifles on their Corps of Discovery from 1804-06.
The airguns had been used to hunt deer and different recreation alongside the route from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean and again.
So there’s nothing new about utilizing compressed air to propel a projectile – versus igniting powder in a cartridge – to hunt large recreation.
What’s completely different is the fashionable development of states legalizing airguns for such makes use of.
Hunters in 23 states can legally use PCP weapons to pursue large recreation, in keeping with the Airgun Sporting Affiliation, a non-profit commerce group based mostly in Helena, Montana.
Efficient July 1, Alaska will turn out to be the twenty fourth. Its guidelines would require .35 caliber and bigger and can be utilized to hunt caribou and deer.
Turek is a Michigan native who grew up searching.
“I am a typical Michigan child,” stated Turek, 46. “My dad handed me a 12-gauge and I discovered to flinch.”
That developed quite a lot of unhealthy habits which Turek was capable of right when he joined the U.S. Military in 1995 and shot an M4 rifle which had little or no recoil.
After he acquired out of the service in 2004 he seemed for brand spanking new challenges and was launched to airguns.
“It was eye-opening,” Turek stated. “Nice, correct and straightforward to make use of merchandise I had principally no information of.”
On the Gaylord vary outing, he took a .35 caliber rifle out of the field, connected a scope, charged it with a cylinder of compressed air, and sighted it in at 50 yards.
It took him simply three photographs to get it within the 3-inch ring on the goal.
Then it was my and different attendees flip to punch paper. The .35 caliber had no extra recoil than the previous Sheridan I shot 35 years in the past.
The variations had been many, although. I did not need to pump this gun. And it was much more highly effective and correct.
The delicate valving on the airgun retains the strain constant from shot to shot, permitting distinctive accuracy.
Turek stated the cost was good for 45 full-power photographs.
It was the primary capturing vary expertise I’ve had the place ear safety was worn however not wanted.
“I can not consider we’re standing right here having a dialog 10 yards behind the road whereas persons are popping targets with large recreation rifles,” stated fellow AGLOW member Bryan Hendricks, outside editor on the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
The benefits of a low recoil, virtually silent rifle that can be correct and highly effective sufficient for giant recreation will be parlayed into hunter recruitment efforts, too.
It is an awesome possibility, for instance, for potential hunters with smaller bodily builds, particularly youth and females.
However they’re certainly not restricted to that area of interest.
Turek stated he is been utilizing airguns to hunt deer in Michigan since 2017. He takes photographs of 150 yards or much less, properly inside the regular limits of deer hunters within the Higher Midwest.
Air rifles are additionally authorized to hunt large recreation in Indiana and Missouri.
A transfer to legalize them in Wisconsin may materialize within the coming years.
Nonetheless, opposition has come from archery hunters who’ve fought measures which might permit PCP gadgets to propel arrows, generally known as airbows, for deer searching.
Assist was blended (6680 in favor, 6686 opposed and 7950 with no opinion) in a Wisconsin Conservation Congress advisory query posed on the April 2022 spring hearings.
It requested: Do you prefer the Wisconsin Conservation Congress working with the DNR and the Legislature to permit the usage of pneumatic applied sciences to be aligned with present firearm searching rules and seasons?
Extra Wisconsinites would have doubtless supported it if the hypothetical framework hadn’t included “arrow-based projectiles.”
But when the nationwide development is any indication, airgun advocates will doubtless be working with the Wisconsin Legislature within the subsequent session to develop no less than some PCP use within the state’s searching seasons.
Within the meantime, Turek continues to spotlight the capabilities and benefits of air rifles. He has a video of hitting a golf ball at 600 yards. His aim is to get out to 1,000 yards.
And he’s the Guinness Ebook of World Information holder for longest air rifle shot. He had to make use of a tiny, gentle weight .177 caliber pellet – it went 150 yards.
He additionally makes use of an air gun that is similar to a 12-gauge shotgun: it’s a .72 caliber, shoots a 500-grain slug and produces 1,500 foot kilos of power.
Turek used it to take a deer final season in Michigan.
“Airguns have been round tons of of years,” Turek stated. “They usually simply preserve getting higher. I feel you may be seeing increasingly more of them in searching functions actual quickly.”

Nebraska Football Exorcises a Decade Worth of Demons in Win Over Wisconsin
The Nebraska football team got their sixth win on Saturday night, clinching bowl eligibility for the first time since 2016. They did so by beating Wisconsin for the first time since 2012. The jubilation, relief, and joy could be felt far and wide across the windswept plains. The win resets the entire narrative of year 2 under Matt Rhule, and gives the Huskers a chance at their first winning record in eight years.
We cover it all in the topline takeaways.
CHEERS TO THAT
FINALLY!!! They finally did it. Finally beat Wisconsin. Finally clinched a bowl game. Finally got over the hump, after so much heartbreak and so many close losses over the last eight years. You could feel the collective sigh of relief across the entire fan base, combined with the elation that came with the moment. It felt like we were exorcizing so many demons from the last decade of Nebraska football. Fans stormed the field. Social media went nuts. Friends and family members shared in the moment as if the Berlin wall had just come down. I’m not exaggerating or lying when I say, I actually cried.
It’s a sign of how low the program has fallen that simply getting to bowl eligibility elicited such a response from the fan base, but that’s where we are. I’m glad Matt Rhule addressed that point in the post game press conference. I loved how he made the point that the Huskers are building something bigger, and this will be the only time they celebrate six wins. But they had to get this done first. Before you can win the conference, before you can get to the college football playoff, before you can dream bigger dreams, you have to get back to a bowl game. Mission accomplished.
Dana Holgorsen’s Offense. I don’t care that this is not your traditional, stifling Wisconsin defense. The Badgers held #1 Oregon to 16 points just one week ago. And the Nebraska offense had their way with that defense, all game long. Dylan Raiola looked like the five star quarterback we’ve been waiting for. Emmett Johnson ran like a bat out of hell, leading the team in both rushing yards (113) and receiving yards (85). Jacorey Barney did what he’s been doing all season long, making plays and making defenders miss. Dante Dowdell ran like the Big Ten bruiser we saw earlier in the season. The offensive line had arguably their best game of this decade.
Huge props to Rhule for making the bold decision to bring Holgorsen in as the offensive coordinator with just three games to go. Some panned the decision as desperate, and there was no guarantee it would work. He’s had a clear and immediate impact on this offense. Now Nebraska needs to do whatever is necessary to keep him in Lincoln for next season (and hopefully, beyond).
Husker Nation. Hats off to you, fellow Common Fans. Hats off to all of us. Nebraska has had one winning season and two bowl games since 2015. The team has suffered through too many painful, inexplicable, gut punch losses to count. Our team, still in the top ten in all-time wins, has had one of the worst stretches of football in its long, glorious history. And we never left. We kept showing up, kept filling up that beautiful stadium, kept believing things would turn around. Nebraska football truly has the greatest fan base in all of sports. Hopefully, this is just the beginning.
DIDN’T LIKE THAT
Defensive Struggles. I contemplated not having anything in this category this week, because this is a time of celebration for all Husker fans. But it’s a bit concerning as we head into Iowa week that the Husker defense hasn’t been as dominant as we’re used to seeing over the last two weeks. USC scored 28 points on the Blackshirts, and Wisconsin scored 25. Both teams had missed or blocked field goals that would have made those totals even higher. Both teams put up over 400 yards. The defensive backfield in particular has been a concern, with opposing receivers seemingly wide open way too often. And there have been way too many missed tackles in recent games.
Hopefully, the Huskers can clean up the defensive issues for the Iowa game. The Hawkeyes are a run-heavy team, having completed only 10 out 14 passes for 76 yards in their game against Maryland this weekend. That should play to Nebraska’s strengths, but it’s Iowa, so we should assume the Blackshirts will need their absolute best possible performance in order for the Huskers to come out of there with a win.
FINAL THOUGHT
Happy Thanksgiving week, Common Fans. I’m thankful for each of you who read these columns, as well as those who listen to the Common Fan Podcast. It’s such a joy to play some small part in helping fans enjoy and engage with this thing we all love so much. I wish each of you a wonderful holiday filled with family and friends. Enjoy it, celebrate the big win over Wisconsin, and then get ready to strap in and take the fight to the Hawkeyes on Friday.
As always, GBR for LIFE.

What Went Wrong in Wisconsin’s 44-25 loss to Nebraska
The Wisconsin Badgers started the week 5-5 and hoped to become bowl-eligible for the 23rd straight season. They also hoped to continue their dominance over the Nebraska Cornhuskers, who haven’t beaten the Badgers since 2012.
Well, Wisconsin lost to Nebraska 44-25 in what was yet another disappointing loss this season.
Here’s what went wrong for Wisconsin in the 44-25 loss to Nebraska.
Special teams
Wisconsin played surprisingly well in the first half, with Braedyn Locke connecting on multiple long pass attempts.
However, they still couldn’t find a way to make it into the endzone which forced Nathanial Vakos to attempt three crucial field goals. He missed two of them.
That killed Wisconsin’s momentum and definitely was a key factor in the Badgers’ loss. Head coach Luke Fickell’s team has had their fair share of special teams blunders, with a couple of dropped punts early in the season and now these missed kicks.
He needs to fix these small issues as he approaches a very important third season as Wisconsin’s head coach.
Coaching blunders
There were some small blunders that led to huge mistakes by this Badgers coaching staff. For example, attempting a run instead of kneeling at the end of the first half which led to a fumble and Nebraska field goal is inexcusable.
What also doesn’t make sense is how many penalties the Badgers’ defense received in the red zone, whether it be pass interference, roughing the passer, or a facemask. Those penalties killed any chances at a Wisconsin comeback as the offense had one of their better outings in recent memory.
Overall, Coach Fickell needs to continue to preach his philosophy of being disciplined in tight games like these or else they will continue to drop them. They have the recruits coming in and ability, they need to limit silly mistakes that hurt them in the long run.
Wisconsin takes on Minnesota next Saturday in a game that will make or break the Badgers’ season. There is a small chance that the Badgers make a bowl game even at 5-7 due to APR, but it would be a terrible end to a disappointing season.
Expect Fickell to prepare extensively for their senior day game, hoping to salvage the season by keeping Paul Bunyan’s axe in Madison.
