South Dakota Legislature Gears Up for Busy Week

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Legislature is gearing up for a busy week as lawmakers dive into committee hearings on a wide range of bills.

With all bills now introduced, the focus shifts to committee deliberations and the upcoming Crossover Day on February 25th. This will mark the point in which bills must be passed by their originating chamber and sent to the other for consideration.

State Representative Mike Derby, who represents western Rapid City, gave his remarks to NewsCenter1 about the week ahead.

““It’s not very long that we’ll have Crossover Day coming up,” said Derby, “that’s always a big day.”

Bills were due on Wednesday so this week will be rather busy

State Rep. Mike Derby also serves on the Joint Committee on Appropriations. This week he will hear from the Bureau of Finance and Management about Project: BISON. The Business Information System for Operational Needs project aims to streamline accounting processes, improve efficiency, and enhance data security. It involves the implementation of a new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, which will replace outdated technology and improve the state’s financial management.

“Project BISON is one of the biggest initiatives the state of South Dakota has ever undertaken,” Derby said, “We’re operating on a system that’s probably well over 20 years old. It’s time for an update.”

In addition to changes to systems internal to the state, South Dakota residents can expect changes to the state’s motor vehicle registration system. The Department of Revenue is set to launch the 605Drive system on February 17^th which is designed to improve the efficiency and convenience of vehicle registration and titling processes.

The current online vehicle registration system will be down Feb. 14th through the 16th as improvements take effect

As the legislative session progresses, lawmakers will continue to grapple with a variety of issues, including education funding, tax policy, and infrastructure projects. With a packed agenda and tight deadlines, the coming weeks promise to be a pivotal period for South Dakota.

Sheridan Lake rescue prompts winter ice safety warning

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – A harrowing scene at Sheridan Lake ended without serious injury Tuesday after a man, a woman and their dog fell through thin ice near the swimming beach, authorities said.

Keep pets on a leash and never attempt a risky rescue if someone falls through the ice, officials said. Call 911 immediately.

The South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks agency advises that ice three inches or less is unsafe. Four inches is generally considered the minimum for walking, ice fishing or skating.

Lt. Casey Kenrick of the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office said the incident is a reminder to take extra precautions this winter.

“Usually at this time the ice is significantly thick on the lakes around the area, well, some aren’t even frozen all the way at this point. The temperatures have been up and down so much that the ice isn’t solid even though it may look like it is, so make sure you know the ice depth that you’re getting onto,” Kenrick said.

Kenrick said those precautions could mean the difference between a close call and a tragedy.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – On Jan. 7, 1995, William Janklow began his third of four terms as governor. From statehood until 1972, governors served two-year terms. Voters then approved a constitutional amendment in 1972 allowing governors to serve two consecutive four-year terms.

Janklow served from 1979 to 1987 and again from 1995 to 2003. His 16 years are the longest stint of any governor in South Dakota history
