Gusty winds, spotty showers to wrap up weekend in Minnesota

With a storm approaching from the west, Minnesota will finish out the weekend with clouds and gusty winds.
Wind gusts will reach up to 35 mph, and there’s a chance for some on-and-off showers throughout the day. Only a tenth to a quarter of an inch of rain is expected, so there will also be some dry time.
Temperatures will remain above average Sunday, with a high close to 70.
The rain should wrap up by Monday morning and winds will calm down overnight. High pressure will keep things dry to start the week.
Temperatures drop again slightly at the start of the week, but highs will stay seasonable in the upper 50s to near 60.
There could be another shot to see a few showers on Tuesday, but another system looks more likely Thursday into Friday.
Temperatures bounce back a bit toward the end of the week, reaching back into the mid-upper 60s.

Koi Perich’s interception return lifts Minnesota over Purdue 27-20

Koi Perich returned an interception for the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter and Minnesota held on to defeat Purdue 27-20 on Saturday.
Drake Lindsey threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns for the Golden Gophers (4-2, 2-1 in the Big Ten), who overcame deficits of 10-0 and 20-13.
Ryan Browne threw for 203 yards and ran for 61 yards and a touchdown for Purdue (2-4, 0-3), who outrushed the Gophers 253-30 but were done in by numerous mistakes.
Minnesota tied the game 20-20 midway through the fourth on a 14-play, 70-yard drive that ended in Lindsey’s 4-yard touchdown pass to Jameson Geers. The drive was aided by two face mask penalties on the Boilermakers.
On the next play from scrimmage, Perich — a sophomore safety who made many preseason All-America lists — jumped in front of a Browne pass and returned it 27 yards for the go-ahead touchdown.
Browne then marched the Boilermakers all the way to Minnesota’s 5-yard line, but a holding penalty pushed them back 10 yards and a fourth-down pass was broken up at the goal line by Jai’Onte’ McMillan.
Myles Slusher had six tackles, broke up two passes and intercepted another for the Boilermakers, who have lost four straight.
Purdue: The Boilermakers dominated both lines of scrimmage and outgained the Gophers by nearly 200 total yards, but they couldn’t overcome nine penalties, three dropped passes and three interception, including one at the goal line on a halfback pass.
Minnesota: The return of leading rusher Darius Taylor, who missed two games due to injury, was supposed to reinvigorate Minnesota’s rushing attack. But in the two games since he came back, Taylor has just 44 yards rushing on 22 carries.
Minnesota hosts Nebraska on Friday; Purdue visits Northwestern on Saturday.

Rush City prisoner’s death from ‘obvious injuries’ investigated as homicide

An inmate died in a Minnesota prison this week after an apparent fight with his cellmate.
Shannon Loehrke, communications director for Minnesota’s Department of Corrections, said correctional officers found the man injured and unresponsive with “obvious injuries” when answering a call of an inmate down in their cell on Thursday afternoon.
Staff and emergency medical workers tried helping the man, who died at the scene.
“Preliminary information suggests that an altercation occurred between the victim and his cellmate,” a DOC news release read, adding that investigators will focus on what led to that altercation. “An autopsy will be performed by the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the manner and cause of death.”
Loehrke said authorities will share more information as they investigate with help from the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the Chisago County Sheriff’s Office and the DOC’s Office of Special Investigations.
Incidents at Rush City prison have troubled authorities and inmates for years. An inmate attacked correctional officers in August, stabbing one with a shank and injuring three others. Inmates claimed months earlier that they were being served yellow, rotten chicken and other foods not made for human consumption. Authorities denied those allegations and said the foods meet safety requirements.

Gophers skate to 2-2 tie with Boston College; win in shootout

The No. 12 Golden Gophers men’s hockey team skated to a 2-2 draw with No. 11/10 Boston College from 3M Arena at Mariucci Friday night. Javon Moore and Brodie Ziemer scored in regulation before LJ Mooney and Tanner Ludtke found the back of the net to claim the non-conference shootout victory.
Nathan Airey had another impressive outing in goal for Minnesota (1-2-1 overall, 0-0-0 B1G), finishing with 29 saves against the Eagles (1-1-1 overall, 0-0-0 Hockey East). The junior also stopped both BC attempts in the shootout.
From the outside, the Gophers’ celebration after winning the shootout may have seemed excessive, but for the Maroon and Gold faithful, the moment was a long time coming. The team had missed its previous 28 shootout attempts and lost 11-consecutive shootouts dating back to February of 2020 at Notre Dame. Mooney snapped the streak on the first attempt of 2025-26 and Ludtke ripped home the winner.
The home side had to weather early pressure from Boston College and Airey delivered five saves in the opening five minutes. After holding off the surge, the Gophers thought they took the lead at the 12:58 mark, only to have the goal waved off and a penalty called instead. Momentum immediately shifted to the visitors as they converted the man advantage on a one-timer from the left circle.
Minnesota quickly answered to pull even with 6:32 left in the opening period as Moore buried a juicy rebound from near the goal line for his first collegiate tally. Jacob Rombach started the play on a shot from the point that rang off the crossbar before a strong forecheck gave Mason Moe a chance that was blocked. Moore controlled the rebound and fired it past the sliding goalie, tying the score, 1-1.
The Maroon and Gold went to its first power play less than a minute later as the Eagles took a post-whistle penalty. The opportunity was erased before a second minor penalty to BC gave the Gophers a late man advantage that carried over into the second period as it remained a 1-1 tie. The power play unit was unable to capitalize again, but thanks to the visitors continuing to battle after whistles, they were called for their third penalty.
This time it cost the Eagles as Ziemer tucked home the go-ahead goal 5:52 into the middle frame. The sophomore walked along the goal line and snuck a shot under the netminder’s pads for a 2-1 advantage via the Gophers’ first power-play goal this season. Shortly after taking its first lead of the series, Minnesota got caught in its own zone and a deflected pass went to an open skater, who fired in the tying goal. The home side correctly challenged for offside earlier in the sequence, negating the goal and getting a roar from the 3M Arena at Mariucci crowd, sending the team to the locker room with a 2-1 edge through 40 minutes.
The Gophers started the third period looking to put the game away as they skated with a purpose. An unfavorable penalty to the home team allowed BC its third power play and this time Airey and his defense shut down the attack. The Eagles brought a sense of urgency late in the action and with less than five minutes to play in regulation and scored to tie the contest, 2-2. A Minnesota skater was tripped in the offensive zone, generating an odd-man rush for the visitors that they converted. The Gophers made another strong push at the end of the game but could not find the winning tally, sending the game into overtime.
Both sides had chances in the extra session with the Gophers controlling most of the play. The goaltenders, as they did all series, were sharp to the end and the game officially ended in a 2-2 tie. In the shootout Mooney and Ludtke each stepped up and scored goals, while Airey shut down BC.
