Minneapolis agrees to pay almost $9M to settle lawsuits involving Derek Chauvin
Town of Minneapolis on Thursday agreed to pay roughly $8.9 million to settle two lawsuits involving former police officer Derek Chauvin, who was charged with killing George Floyd in 2020.

Town introduced that John Pope will obtain $7.5 million and Zoya Code will obtain $1.375 million.
“He ought to have been fired in 2017. He ought to have been held accountable in 2017,” Mayor Jacob Frey stated of Chauvin (D) at a information convention, including that “If the supervisors had completed the proper factor, George Floyd wouldn’t have been murdered.”
Floyd’s killing sparked nationwide protests and a reckoning about race and police brutality.
Minneapolis police chief Brian O’Hara referred to as Chauvin, who’s now in federal jail for Floyd’s homicide, a “nationwide embarrassment to the policing career” and “an instance of the most cancers that has contaminated this division.”
He apologized on behalf of the division to Pope, Code and their households.
“To the officers which can be presently in our Minneapolis Police Division which can be enraged by the sort of conduct that Derek Chauvin dedicated, that’s the sort of person who we would like in our police division,” Frey stated. “That’s the route we have to go.”
The previous officer had already been convicted criminally on federal costs associated to the incident involving Pope and pleaded responsible in 2021, based on town. He was not charged in Code’s case.
