Cedar-Riverside shooting: Councilmember calls out ‘disgusting’ lack of action on encampments
(FOX 9) – Following a reported lethal capturing at a homeless encampment Thursday morning within the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis, a metropolis council member is pitting blame towards the governor, MNDOT and different companies for his or her lack of motion towards cleansing up homeless encampments.
Councilman Jamal Osman says police have been known as out for the lethal capturing at an encampment close to S. sixth St. and fifteenth Ave. S. in Minneapolis.
Hours after the capturing, Osman, who represents Ward 6 in Minneapolis, claims a number of companies have “averted accountability, handed off blame” as they’ve ignored the “violent” encampments in his neighborhood.
“My employees and I’ve been begging for motion at this encampment for months. The governor, MNDOT, and everybody else concerned have averted accountability, handed off blame, and used accounting as excuses to disregard a homeless encampment in the midst of Cedar-Riverside,” the assertion from Osman reads. “For months MNDOT has refused to satisfy with neighborhood members whose high quality of life they instantly influence. For months MNDOT has refused to guide in making certain the well being, security, and well-being of practically 100 Minnesota residents…Violence is one thing that completely comes with any homeless encampment within the metropolis.”
In December the town of Minneapolis cleared a homeless encampment on the Quarry procuring middle in Northeast Minneapolis – citing their illegality and security considerations – and providing these onsite providers offered by the Catholic Charities’ Alternative Heart.
“I’m disgusted at how the state has willfully ignored and disregarded my neighborhood. Politicians don’t have any qualms about coming round Cedar Riverside at election time, however when a homeless encampment places the well being and security of each resident there in danger, the Governor and his appointees couldn’t be bothered to point out up for the neighborhood,” learn the assertion from Osman. “I name on MNDOT to work with the Metropolis of Minneapolis to shut this encampment as quickly as potential. The residents I characterize deserve higher.”
FOX 9 has reached out to the Minneapolis Police Division on the circumstances of Thursday’s capturing. Police haven’t but confirmed details about the capturing or any connection to a homeless encampment.

Minneapolis bridge getting $34 million in federal funding for improvements, repairs
MINNEAPOLIS — A project to improve the Nicollet Avenue Bridge is getting $34.2 million in federal funding.
The funding is part of a $635 million grant for 22 small and medium-sized bridge projects around the U.S., according to the Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration.
The bridge, which stands over Minnehaha Creek in Minneapolis’ Tangletown neighborhood, was built in 1923 and underwent repairs in 1973, according to the city.
Federal officials say over 10,000 vehicles cross the bridge every day.
The city is planning to replace the bridge’s sidewalks, drainage and lighting systems and create protected bike lanes.
The money for the grant is part of the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill, which was signed into law in 2021.
During construction, the bridge will be closed to all cars, bikes and pedestrians. Timing on construction is undecided, according to the city.
