Of all of the players who Greg Schiano convinced to join his cause at Rutgers this weekend, Muskegon (Mi.) high offensive lineman N’kye Wynn is the most highly-sought.

A four-star tackle, according to On3.com, Wynn picked Rutgers on Sunday over 24 offers including Wisconsin, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Michigan State, Vanderbilt, Pitt, Minnesota, Purdue, Indiana, and Iowa State.

Better yet, Wynn cancelled four visits he had scheduled down the stretch to Wisconsin, Michigan State, Pitt, and the Kentucky Wildcats which have yet to offer.

Group of five programs Cincinnati, Tulane, Western Michigan, Toledo, Miami of Ohio, Liberty, Kent State, Eastern Michigan, Colorado State, Central Michigan, Bowling Green, and Colorado State also offered the blue-chip.

A D2 MHSAA state champion and the fourth-ranked offensive lineman in Michigan, Wynn led an offense which tallied 5,400 offensive yards — 4,600 on the ground — averaged 385 offensive yards per game and scored 82 touchdowns — 18 of which came off of Wynn’s hip, last fall.

Wynn allowed zero sacks and just one pressure in addition to 67 knockdown blocks, earning him all-state recognition and a national offer list. He boasts a 32-inch vertical, 315-pound bench press, 485-pound squat and runs the 40-yard dash in 5.1 seconds.

With one high school season left to play, Wynn has started 28 games at right tackle and will bring said experience to an offensive line room that has improved significantly in two years under ex-Giants offensive line coach Pat Flaherty.

Twenty-one high school seniors — and potential Scarlet Knights — learned the ins and outs of Rutgers’ facilities, academic programs and schematic football plans this weekend while judging whether Rutgers is the program for them. Seven of the 21 players (33%) are rated four-stars.

Eight visitors have committed this weekend and could shape Rutgers’ roster for years to come.

Former Michigan State state safety Jaden Mangham made an enemy of Spartan Nation when he announced he would be transferring to Michigan last month.

It was a move that had the Spartan faithful feeling betrayed, especially considering Mangham had experienced the rivalry for two seasons.

Mangham entered the portal at the end of April and was one of the last Spartans to do so.

Just hours after his announcement to go to Michigan, a former Wolverine, linebacker Semaj Bridgeman announced his commitment to Michigan State.

Michigan coach Sherrone Moore spoke about the whole situation when he addressed the media at the Sound Mind Sound Body (SMSB) National College Showcase this week.

“We’re happy we got Jaden,” Moore said. “He’s a really good player, he’s an All-Big Ten player, so super stoked for him. And excited for Semaj — he got an opportunity he felt like he wanted, so good for him and all the blessings for him. But I think the rivalries are still alive and there’s respect in all of them, but they’re still alive.”

Moore, who is entering his first season as head coach, has been with Michigan since 2018, having served as the team’s tight ends coach for three seasons before becoming the offensive line coach for three seasons.

Mangham joins Michigan after two seasons with the Spartans, with whom he posted 73 tackles, 1.0 for loss, four interceptions, three passes defensed, and a fumble recovery in 19 games. He was named an All-Big Ten honorable mention last season.

Bridgeman has yet to play a game of college football but entered his first season as a highly-touted recruit. He was a four-star prospect and ranked the No. 5 class of 2023 recruit in the state of Pennsylvania, per 247Sports’ composite rankings, as well as the No. 26 linebacker in the nation.

Michigan State had extended an offer to Bridgemman during his recruiting process before he ultimately chose the Wolverines.

Moore is right, rivalries are, of course, still there, and if anything, the transfer portal has fueled the bitterness between Michigan and Michigan State. The Spartans and Wolverines will meet in Ann Arbor on Oct. 26.

If two Michigan lawmakers have their way, there will be fewer locations in the state where people are allowed to carry firearms.

State Sen. Dayna Polehanki, D-Livonia, and state Sen. Rosemary Bayer, D-Beverly Hills, have introduced bills that would expand gun-free zones within the State Capitol complex.

Both have advocated for stricter gun laws in Michigan.

Senate Bills 857 and 858 would make it illegal to carry a firearm in the State Capitol building, the Binsfeld Senate Office Building, and the Anderson House Office Building – with an exception for legislators.

Ryan Bates, executive director of the group End Gun Violence Michigan, said he believes these proposals are much needed.

“We cannot have a functioning democracy at the barrel of a gun,” said Bates. “So, it’s incredibly important that we protect our legislators and protect our democracy from people who want to do it harm by bringing guns into the places where our laws are made.”

If the gun-free zone bills become law, violators could face up to 90 days in jail, and or be fined.

During the highly publicized Oxford High School shooter trial, Polehanki took to social media to warn parents that if their child discharges a firearm and causes harm to themselves or others, the parent is going to jail.

Longtime firearms instructor and gun-rights advocate Rick Ector said he’s all for responsible gun ownership – but not gun-free zones.

He argued that having law-abiding citizens carrying firearms in more places would inherently make these areas safer.

“People who have a concealed pistol license, who are primarily the people we’re talking about,” said Ector, “they are statistically more law-abiding than the law enforcement community, and they’ve gone through all the required, statutorily specified training.”

Both bills have been assigned to the Senate Committee on Civil Rights, Judiciary and Public Safety.​
