The fatal shooting took place Sunday morning at a block party on Detroit’s east side, according to a release from the Detroit Police Department.

DETROIT — Two people are dead and more than a dozen others were injured after a shooting Sunday in Detroit, according to Michigan State Police, the latest deadly incident involving the use of firearms in the nation.

A 20-year-old woman, who was shot in the head, and a 21-year-old man who was shot in the back were killed, according to WDIV-TV, which also reported the woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the man pronounced dead at the hospital.

Among the injured is a 17-year-old girl in critical condition, 13 people in temporary serious condition, and three in stable condition, according to WDIV.

No one is in custody, according to the Michigan State Police.

“The violence at several block parties over the last three days has been heartbreaking for this city,” Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan told the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network. “Young people and innocent neighbors are being put at risk every weekend. Chief (James) White and I will hold a full briefing tomorrow to discuss this spike in violence at these events and our plans to address it.”

John Roach, Duggan spokesman, said they understood there were other instances of violence at other block parties over the weekend. Specific details were not immediately available.

The topic will be addressed at a press conference slated for Monday, Donakowski told the Free Press.

‘We can’t continue to have this level of violence’

City Councilman Scott Benson lives just a couple blocks away from where the shooting took place and said he was “shaken” on Sunday. He was asleep when it happened but he’s heard of a block party spilling over, yelling, and screams for help in reports from his community leaders.

He was told multiple guns were recovered from the scene — nine, according to his information. Benson questioned why anyone would feel the need to bring a gun to a block party.

“Phone, keys, gun? Why is the gun on the list?” he said, urging: “We can’t continue to have this level of violence.”

George Preston, President of the Mohican Regent Homeowners Association, which organizes monthly meetings to encourage residents to come up with solutions that affect their communities, lamented the deadly shooting.

“It’s heartbreaking to see that someone has lost their life here,” said Preston, who plans on talking and listening to community members about the violence in the neighborhood.

Michigan State Police is assisting the Detroit Police Department in investigating the shooting and asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-773-2587.

Fourth of July weekend shootings across the US

Violence and mass shootings surge during the summer months as temperatures rise and people gather in large crowds for activities. Each year, the Fourth of July ranks as the most violent day of the year, according to Northeastern University criminologist James Alan Fox.

The Gun Violence Archive — which records gun violence incidents — defines mass shootings as a minimum of four victims, excluding the suspect, injured or killed by gunfire. Since the Fourth of July, at least 16 people were killed and 167 injured in several shootings across the country, according to the most recent data from the Gun Violence Archive.

These incidents include a shooting in Florence, Kentucky, that left four people dead and three people injured at a 21st birthday party on Saturday.

A series of unrelated shootings also occurred around Chicago following Fourth of July celebrations. The largest shooting happened at around 12:15 a.m. Friday, when eight people were wounded after two people exchanged gunfire.

Pro Football Network came out with their latest 2025 NFL Mock Draft that featured four Michigan football players going in the first round. While ESPN’s first ’25 mock draft had three Wolverines — all three went in the top 15. Whereas in the PFN’s mock draft, only one Wolverine was selected in the top 15 and the others were later draft picks.

Let’s dive into where the four Michigan players ended up going in PFN’s 2025 mock draft.

This feels like an A+ fit for Johnson. Until New England can figure out its offensive woes, the Patriots will have to continue to rely on their defense. If the Patriots could add the top cornerback to their roster and build around him for the future, it would be excellent for both parties. Johnson locked down two of the top receivers last season when Michigan faced Ohio State and Washington. Johnson allowed just three catches when he covered Marvin Harrison Jr. and Rome Odunze — including an interception.

Yeah, I don’t see Mason Graham dropping this far, but if he did — a homerun for the Rams. Graham is arguably the top-ranked interior defensive lineman in college football. The junior had a 90.0 PFF grade last season and was among the best as a sophomore who rotated with Kris Jenkins and Kenneth Grant. Graham is going to play the bulk of the snaps in 2024 for the Wolverines and will likely make an even bigger impact on the field. Graham is sneaky good at getting to the quarterback as a DT and is one of the best run-stuffers there is.

ESPN did not feature Kenneth Grant in the first round of its 2025 mock draft, but it’s likely he is. The Falcons have gone after the offensive side of the football in recent drafts, but it’s time for Atlanta to shift its focus to the defense. The Falcons need someone to clog the middle and that’s exactly what big Kenneth Grant can do. An underrated athlete, Grant is right up there with Mason Graham at stuffing the run and is just as good at bringing down the quarterback. His speed will shock many people.

Not sure Colston Loveland drops this far, but once again, if he does — a homerun pick for the Packers. Loveland is viewed by many as the top tight end in the country and is going to be the top target on the Michigan offense in 2024. He was already a safety blanket for J.J. McCarthy last year with guys like Roman Wilson and Cornelius Johnson on the team. But now that McCarthy is gone, Alex Orji — or whoever starts — will be looking Loveland’s way plenty. He is an all-around tight end who blocks well but has elite hands too.

There’s No Doubt, Sherrone Moore Was Always The Choice For Michigan

It’s clear that Michigan is placing a large emphasis on recruiting the South in the first full cycle of the Sherrone Moore era. Of the Wolverines’ 13 verbal commitments in the class of 2025, eight have come from players located south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

One of those pledges came from three-star Stockbridge (Ga.) linebacker Chase Taylor, who committed to Michigan on June 24 among a final grouping which included South Carolina, Georgia Tech and USC.

Taylor has been a productive player each of the last two years in high school. Per MaxPreps, Taylor totaled 66 tackles with three sacks during his sophomore season in 2022. That was followed up by a junior season in which Taylor tallied 73 tackles, with six tackles for loss, six sacks and three forced fumbles. His junior season highlight reels can be watched here.

While listed as a three-star recruit, Taylor’s offer sheet suggests he’s underrated as a prospect. The 6-foot-3, 201-pounder has drawn 27 scholarship offers from FBS-level programs, with the likes of Tennessee, Florida State, Clemson and LSU showing interest in addition to his final grouping. Taylor is considered the No. 588 overall prospect, No. 63 linebacker and No. 65 player from the state of Georgia in the 2025 recruiting class, according to 247Sports’ Composite rankings.

Michigan linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary and defensive coordinator Wink Martindale did an excellent job in the battle for Taylor’s commitment, which was wrapped up when the Peach State native took an official visit to Ann Arbor back on June 21. That was the fourth official visit for Taylor, who also took trips to USC (May 31), South Carolina (June 7) and Georgia Tech (June 14) this summer.

The Wolverines’ missed on four-star Trenton (N.J.) Hun linebacker target Kamar Archie earlier this week, but remain in a fierce battle with Notre Dame and others for Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy’s Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng (No. 70 overall) at the position.

In addition to Archie, the Wolverines have seen four other high-profile prospects commit to other programs in four-star Philadelphia (Pa.) St. Joseph defensive lineman Maxwell Roy (Ohio State), four-star Brooklin (Mass.) Dexter interior offensive lineman Hardy Watts (Wisconsin), four-star Danville (Calif.) San Ramon Valley edge rusher Marco Jones (Texas A&M) and four-star Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman interior offensive lineman Seuseu Alofaituli.

Good news could be on the way next week for Michigan however, as the Wolverines are the current favorites to land four-star Center Valley (Pa.) Southern Lehigh tight end Andrew Olesh (No. 121) and three-star Destrehan (La.) wide receiver Phillip Wright (No. 533). Olesh — who is also considering Alabama and Penn State — is set to announce his commitment on July 8, while Wright will make his announcement on July 13 between Michigan and Georgia Tech.

Michigan’s 2025 recruiting class is currently ranked No. 22 in the country and No. 7 in the Big Ten, through the Wolverines average player ranking of 91.03 is the third-best mark in the conference.
