Eduardo Rodriguez pitches Detroit Tigers to 3-2 win over Kansas City Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Eduardo Rodriguez allowed two runs and four hits over seven dominant innings, Miguel Cabrera drove in the go-ahead run and the Detroit Tigers held on through a nervy ninth for a 3-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night.

Rodriguez (6-5) needed just 37 pitches to cut through the Kansas City lineup once, and the left-hander still had not allowed a hit until Matt Duffy’s one-out single in the fifth. Rodriguez wound up striking out seven without allowing a walk.

Jason Foley worked the eighth for Detroit before Alex Lange ran into trouble closing things out.

He began by plunking Salvador Perez, bounced by to get pinch hitter Nicky Lopez to ground into a double play, then walked Michael Massey. Drew Waters followed with a sharp single that looked as if it might score the tying run, but third base coach Vance Wilson threw up the stop sign, leaving the Royals with runners on the corners and two outs.

Lange proceeded to strike out Kyle Isbel and finish off his 16th save.

Javier Baez homered and Kerry Carpenter also drove in a run for the Tigers, who had struggled to solve Ryan Yarbrough until the lanky Royals left-hander experienced some cramping in his hamstring with two outs in the sixth inning.

Yarbrough (2-5) allowed three runs on six hits and a walk.

The Tigers jumped ahead on Baez’s solo shot in the second inning, his seventh of the year, and for a while it looked as if that might be enough. Rodriguez leaned on his fastball and cutter, along with an occasional changeup, to keep Kansas City guessing until Duffy finally delivered his single in the fifth inning.

Massey followed with a tying double down the right-field line. And after Waters grounded out, Isbel added an RBI double to give Kansas City a 2-1 lead — and leave Rodriguez slapping his glove in frustration.

Yarbrough and the Royals bullpen gave it right back, though

The Tigers had pulled even again in the sixth on Carpenter’s single when Yarbrough — who missed 55 games this season with head fractures from a line drive — began to cramp. He was checked on by the Kansas City training staff and threw one warm-up pitch before departing, and Hernandez proceeded to walk Baez before Cabrera’s single put Detroit ahead for good.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: Perez was back in the lineup after missing a couple of starts with a left hamstring strain. “Everything is good,” manager Matt Quatraro said, “just don’t look for him to score from first or anything.”

INJURED LIST

Royals LHP Daniel Lynch went on the injured list with a shoulder strain and reliever Austin Cox recalled from Triple-A Omaha to take his place. Lynch experienced a dip in volocity before the All-Star break and it was still there during his start Tuesday night, so the Royals decided to give him a rest. They hope Lynch is back as soon as he is eligible.

MIGGY’S FAREWELL

Cabrera, who is retiring after this season, was honored by the Royals during his final scheduled visit to Kauffman Stadium. Perez and Hall of Famer George Brett helped to present a $10,000 check to Cabrera’s foundation along with a framed crown-and-photo montage, which honored the triple crown that Cabrera clinched in Kansas City on Oct. 4, 2012.

UP NEXT

Royals RHP Zack Greinke is expected to come off the IL to start the series finale against Detroit on Thursday. The 39-year-old Greinke (1-9, 5.44) has been out since leaving his start July 4 against Minnesota with right shoulder discomfort. The Tigers will counter with RHP Michael Lorenzen (4-6, 3.75).

Law enforcement investigating crash northeast of Emporia on Kansas Turnpike

LYON COUNTY, Kan. (WIBW) – Law enforcement is investigating a crash located northeast of Emporia on the Kansas Turnpike.

KVOE officials said the incident was reported as an injury crash around 3:15 p.m. on Saturday, July 27 at Kansas Turnpike mile marker 134 southbound, or seven miles northeast of the Emporia tollgate and two miles northeast of the Emporia service exit.

Kansas Highway Patrol, Emporia/Lyon County EMS and a medical helicopter responded to the scene.

KVOE said crash details are pending. There is no confirmation on whether anybody was hospitalized.

KVOE said the southbound traffic is being detoured from the Admire-Council Grove exit, or Turnpike mile marker 147, west on US-56 Highway to Admire. The official detour goes south on K-99 to Burlingame Rd. and into Emporia.

Former Kansas State, Nebraska QB Adrian Martinez signs with new NFL team

The New York Jets announced they signed former Kansas State and Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez, according to a release.

Corresponding with the move, cornerback Kendall Sheffield was also signed to the training camp roster. QB Ben Bryant and CB Nehemiah Shelton were released.

Martinez most recently played with the Birmingham Stallions in the UFL, earning MVP honors. He passed for 1,749 yards, 15 touchdowns and added 528 rushing yards.

Martinez went undrafted in 2023 and was signed by the Detroit Lions. Eventually, Detroit waived him last August, paving way for his UFL stint.

While in college, Martinez played five seasons, four at Nebraska and one at Kansas State (2022). Over the course of his career, Martinez threw for 9,752 yards, 51 touchdowns, 31 interceptions, a 63.6% completion percentage, 2,982 rushing yards and 45 rushing touchdowns.

As a member of the Class of 2018, Martinez was a four-star recruit out of Fresno (Calif.) Clovis West, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 22 overall prospect in the state, the No. 13 quarterback in the class and the No. 150 overall prospect in the class.

Adrian Martinez signs with New York Jets

Speaking with HuskerOnline earlier this year, Martinez opened up about his time away from the NFL. He never wavered.

“That thought never crossed my mind,” Martinez said when asked he thought of walking away from football. “It was always, ‘I need to find the right opportunity.’ I know the kind of player that I am right now is an NFL-caliber quarterback. I still have that belief. It really was about: How can I get myself back to getting that right opportunity and making sure I make the most of it?”

Martinez is the latest quarterback on the roster headlined by the return of Aaron Rodgers. The latter tore his Achilles tendon on the fourth play of the 2023 season.

Now that he’s back, there are bigger expectations for the Jets. Behind him is veteran Tyrod Taylor, followed by rookie and former Florida State star Jordan Travis.

It could be an uphill climb for Martinez to make the roster, but if his play is any indication, he’ll certainly have a shot to make the 53-man roster this fall. Training camp and preseason games will be the litmus test.

If anything, Martinez’s latest opportunity could be a way to audition for another team when it’s all said and done.
