EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State continues its season with another superior opponent in Iowa, who will come to town for the Spartans’ Homecoming Weekend.

Defensively, Michigan State will need to lock in and dig within itself to find the same success it had early on this year. For the secondary, another tough passing offense awaits.

Michigan State defensive back Nikai Martinez addressed the media on Wednesday.

Smith: “Well, bye week wrapped up, and I do think it came at a good time for us. Kind of about that midway point, played six games, the thorough look at, really, every play of those six games and analyzing a bunch of different ways. Looking for obviously, some tendencies, where we got to improve on some things we’ve done well, that we got to be able to build off of. I thought the coaches and the players did a nice job, with kind of doing that. Practice just on Wednesday last week. And then we did go last night, getting a little bit of a head start on Iowa. But I appreciate the approach the guys [took] through the week. And then there was some of just getting refreshed, a couple of days off, get their mind away from it. And so I was pleased with kind of how they approached the week. And now, we’re headed into a big-time challenge coming on Saturday. Program I got a bunch of respect for — the way they do things, the longevity of Coach [Kirk] Ferentz. Talk about one of the best in the business. I think I read that he just won his 200th game, which is just so impressive. I think it looks like an Iowa team that plays a physical brand of football — running the thing, high-end defense, special teams is elite, they can beat you in the pass game offensively, a little bit on what they’ve shown in this first half the season, so we got a big-time challenge coming from Homecoming Weekend, so excited about getting a bunch of alumni back for a night game Saturday night.”

When does Iowa’s pheasant season open? Here’s the bird outlook for this fall

Iowa’s pheasant hunting opens this month after one of the strongest seasons the state has seen since 2007.

There were an estimated 83,600 pheasant hunters participating in the 2023 season. The highest bird populations are expected to be in west-central and northwest regions, followed by central and north-central Iowa.

As the fall harvest nears completion, hunters can expect more bird sightings. Roughly one-third of the pheasant harvest takes place within the first nine days of the season, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

When does Iowa pheasant season open?

The pheasant hunting season in Iowa begins Oct. 26 and lasts until Jan. 10.

When is the youth Iowa pheasant hunting season?

Pheasant hunting in Iowa starts with designated time for youth hunters to try to bag some birds. The youth season is Oct. 19-20. During this time, pheasant hunting is open to those 15 years old and younger.

What is the outlook for the upcoming pheasant season in Iowa?

Statewide pheasant populations were found to have 19 birds per 30-mile route, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ annual August roadside survey. This is a decline from previous years, likely due to the wetter-than-normal spring during nesting season. Those hunting in Iowa can expect a harvest between 350,000 to 400,00 roosters, according to the IDNR.

“We’ve had a population that could support this level of harvest, but until last year we didn’t have the hunter numbers,” said Todd Bogenschutz, upland wildlife biologist for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

How many pheasants were bagged in Iowa last season?

More than 590,000 pheasants were bagged last fall. Strong populations accounted for the 62% increase in harvest. This also resulted in a 32% increase in the number of pheasant hunters, according to the DNR. More than 83,600 hunters pursued pheasants in Iowa in comparison to the 63,500 pheasant hunters in 2022.

The drought and mild winters helped ground nesting birds including turkeys and pheasants, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

3rd straight year Iowa has 2nd worst cancer rate

ANKENY, Iowa (Gray Media Iowa State Capitol Bureau) – Something is happening to Iowans. Researchers, doctors, and other medical professionals hope to figure out what is causing it. For the third straight year, the Iowa Cancer Registry reported that the state has the second highest rate in new cancer diagnoses.

Several dozen people from the medical community gathered at Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny for the Iowa Cancer Report. They heard the sobering state of cancer in Iowa.

21,000 new cases of cancer (estimated)
6,100 Iowans will die from cancer (estimated)
168,610 cancer survivors in Iowa (estimated)

The Iowa Cancer Report points out that there is no one reason why the state is only one of two in the country with rising rates of cancer. But the report highlights the high use of alcohol.

Iowans have the fourth highest rate of alcohol-related cancers and the fourth highest rate of binge drinking. The research shows that Iowans who are between 25-34 have the highest binge drinking rate of any age group. And Iowans making more than $100,000 annually binge drink more than those who make less money.
