NASCAR tire test set for Indy oval

Greg Stucker of Goodyear confirmed this week the company will hold a tire test on the oval at Indianapolis Motor Speedway next month.

It will be a two-day test held Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 14 and 15. That is after the NASCAR weekend concludes for the Xfinity Series and Cup Series on the road course.

“We just feel like there’s enough discussion around potentially going back to the oval in the future, let’s go ahead and take the opportunity to get on that racetrack in the old configuration with the Next Gen car,” Stucker told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. “We haven’t run the Next Gen car on the oval, we’ve only run the road course.

“I hate to bring it up, but the last time we took a new car to Indianapolis, it didn’t fair too terribly well from a tire perspective. So, we want to stay ahead of that — we want to get a first look at it so that if that decision is made at some point in the future to go back to the oval, then at least we have a good starting point with this car so then we can go from there.”

NASCAR switched from competing on the oval to the road course in 2020 with the Xfinity Series followed by the Cup Series in 2021. The Cup Series visited Indianapolis for the first time in 1994 on the oval.

“We always feel like we need to go back a couple of times at Indy and test and get prepared for an oval race if that’s going to be the decision,” Stucker continued. “We feel like it’s a good opportunity to go ahead and run, gather some data, see where it stands. We haven’t run that oval for a while, so we’ll see how that surface has aged over the course of a few years since we’ve run there. (It) just seems like a good time to put a mark in the sand and decide what we would need to do if, in fact, we do decide to take that step.”

Next year is the 30th anniversary of the inaugural Brickyard 400 (Aug. 6, 1994). Jeff Gordon won that event, the first of five victories for Gordon at the speedway.

Police investigate death of missing man found in tanning bed at Indianapolis Planet Fitness

Indianapolis police are investigating the death of a man found dead in a tanning bed at a Planet Fitness gym Monday morning.

The man was identified as Derek Sink, 39, by the Marion County Coroner’s Office.

Sink had went into a tanning bed on Friday, his family told NBC affiliate WTHR of Indianapolis.

When he failed to come home, his family reported him missing. His aunt said that Sink was wearing an ankle monitor which led investigators to determine he never left the gym. He was ultimately located in the tanning bed at the gym, located in the 8000 block of Hardegan Street, on Monday morning.

Family said that Sink had struggled with drugs and a needle was found in the room with him.

Marion Superior Court records show Sink had been charged with possession of a narcotic drug and possession of a controlled substance last year. In a plea agreement to the first charge, he was sentenced to one year of home detention including drug testing, which started in May.

It’s not clear how Sink went unnoticed for so long.

The coroner’s office has not yet determined a cause or manner of death as of Wednesday morning.  Indianapolis Metro Police says the death investigation is ongoing.

Elizabeth Len was at that Planet Fitness Monday morning before law enforcement discovered Sink.

She said that she and other members noticed a bad smell in the building near the tanning rooms. “The tanning bed has a door, I believe, but still, why are we not concerned that the tanning bed has been closed for three days, potentially?” Len said to WTHR.

Planet Fitness’ Chief Corporate Affairs Officer McCall Gosselin said in a statement: “We were deeply saddened by the passing of one of our members, and the franchise owner is working with the local authorities in their investigation.”

“At Planet Fitness, we have robust operational brand protocols in place, as the safety and well-being of our members is our top priority. We are working closely with our local franchisee to ensure they are upholding those brand protocols,” Gosselin added.

Keya Benberry, Cho Naptown's Prince join forces to celebrate Indy with new single

Local artists Keya Benberry and Kevin Brents, also known as Cho Naptown’s Prince, have teamed up to release a new single that celebrates Indianapolis, fondly known as Naptown. The song, an homage to the city’s spirit, highlights the artists’ deep connection to their hometown and brings together Benberry’s soulful sound and Brent’s hip-hop influence.

“My children live out of state, and I wanted to remind them that Naptown is home,” Benberry said. The collaboration is her third project with Brents, with whom she frequently partners to bring a hip-hop edge to her music. “When I need a verse, Naptown’s Prince is my guy,” she said.

For both artists, this song about Indianapolis was a natural extension of their passion for representing their city. Brents, who previously held a record deal with Jive Records, says his title, “Naptown Prince,” reflects a lifelong dedication to putting his city on the map. “I’ve been repping Naptown from day one,” Brents said. The single allowed the duo to “put on our nap clothes” and lean into the culture of Indianapolis.

Ana, also a realtor in the area with the Benberry Realty Group, says music is her true passion. She also performs with the local band, The Unit Band, well-known in Indianapolis for its blend of original music and live performances. “I’m a hometown girl,” she said. “I rep my city every Sunday with my Colts, Fever, and Pacers gear.”

Benberry and Brents aim to keep their music local and hope to bring other artists into the mix. “We’re planning a remix,” Benberry said, expressing her goal to feature other local rappers and R&B artists. “I want them to tell us about their Naptown.”

Beyond the music, Benberry has always found joy in seeing others perform her work, a source of pride she believes helps connect the music community in Indianapolis. “When I hear someone else play a song I wrote, that’s everything,” she said.

The single stands as a proud tribute to Indianapolis, highlighting its distinct identity and culture. Listen to more of Benberry’s music at SoundCloud.com.
