Antisemitic graffiti at Jewish Federation of Detroit the latest attack on Jews in Metro Detroit
BLOOMFIELD TWP, Mich. (FOX A2) – The Jewish Federation of Detroit reports that it was targeted in antisemitic vandalism on Monday, just a few days after more than 100 families in West Bloomfield Township and Farmington Hills woke up to find antisemitic material tossed at their front door.
The Max Fisher Federation building on Telegraph Road near Maple was targeted with messages of “Free Palestine”, “Intifada”, and “f*** Israel”.
Gary Torgow, President, Jewish Federation of Detroit Steven Ingber, CEO, Jewish Federation of Detroit issued a statement saying that the timing of the messages was intentionally lined up with the one year anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel.
“We are deeply disturbed and saddened to report that early this morning the offices of the Jewish Federation of Detroit were the target of antisemitic vandalism. This attack, occurring on the anniversary of the October 7 massacre in Israel, was not only an assault on our physical space but also on the heart of our community. It is a stark reminder of the rising tide of hate affecting the Jewish people, here and around the world,” the statement read. “We unequivocally condemn this cowardly act of vandalism and stand firm in our resolve. It will not deter us from our vital mission to support the people of Israel, combat antisemitism, and foster a strong Jewish future. In the face of these challenges, we remain united and resilient, committed to defending our values and protecting our community.”
The spray painting was discovered Monday morning just after families nearby found hateful messages on their front lawns in Farmington Hills and Bloomfield Hills. Those antisemitic messages were inside bags with some kind of pellets that were tossed on the front lawns of homes overnight Friday into Saturday.
“The timing of this detestable activity exacerbates the chilling effect on our community,” said Farmington Hills Police Chief Jeff King. “This type of hateful activity will not be tolerated in Farmington Hills and our agency will use all available resources to prevent, investigate, and prosecute those responsible for this incident.”

Detroit Police form new unit to help violent crime victims and their families
Detroit — Detroit police officials have launched a unit dedicated to helping victims of violent crime and their families by providing information about their cases and emotional support.
The Family Advocate and Manager Liaison for Engagement (FAMLE) Unit will connect violent crime victims and their relatives to services, said Detroit police Chief James White. The unit will consist of sworn and civilian Detroit Police Department employees.
“Our investigators do a great job at balancing their work to find those responsible for crimes and communicating updates with families,” White said in a statement. “It’s a difficult task, and to support them and our families, we are centralizing the resources we have to offer under one unit. FAMLE will refocus our efforts to engage and inform victims’ families as we work to bring them closure.”
According to a DPD news release, the new unit’s mission “is to offer compassionate advocacy, guidance and resources to families impacted by violent crime. Through this effort, we will ensure that the voices of affected families are heard and their needs met throughout the investigative process.”
“FAMLE seeks to strengthen the bond between law enforcement and the community by promoting transparency, empathy and a commitment to justice, all while providing crucial emotional and informational support to families during times of crisis,” the department said.
The FAMLE unit can be reached at (313) 596-2260.

Detroit Tigers Ace Wins Prestigious Publication’s Top Pitching Award
On the eve of the start of the American League Division Series, Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal won the first of what will likely be a wave of postseason awards as Baseball Digest named him its MLB Pitcher of the Year.
Baseball Digest is in its 83rd year as a publication. Last year’s pitcher of the year was New York Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole, who went on to win the American League Cy Young award.
The Tigers play game one of the ALDS on Saturday at Cleveland. Skubal is expected to start in Game 2 on Monday.
In his first postseason start against the Houston Astros in Game 1 of the AL Wild Card series, he threw six innings and earned the victory. He struck out six.
The 27-year-old just wrapped up the best season of his career and won the AL pitching triple crown, as he led the lead in wins, ERA and strikeouts.
He finished the season 18-4 with a 2.39 ERA and 228 strikeouts. Atlanta’s Chris Sale did the same thing in the National League, as he went 18-3 with a 2.38 ERA and 225 strikeouts.
During an interview with MLB Network in September, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said the quiet part out loud about his ace and his breakthrough season.
“Obviously he is the front runner for the Cy Young (award),” Hinch said. “I think he should win it.”
If Skubal is able to win the award, he would become the fifth Detroit pitcher to claim the award and the last to do so since Max Scherzer in 2013. Denny McLain won it twice.
He is also on the All-MLB Team ballot, another honor that is released after the postseason ends.
It’s hard to believe there were rumblings in July that the Tigers might trade him, given that they were well out of the playoff race at the time.
But, the Tigers hung onto him and put together an unprecedented run starting in mid-August — one Skubal anchored in the rotation — to bring home their first playoff berth in a decade.
“He is a frontline starter and when you have those, you want him to pitch every five or six days because he is somebody who can anchor a staff,” Hinch said.
The Tigers drafted him out of Seattle University in 2018. The ninth-round selection moved quickly through the system and made his Majors debut in 2020. This season isn’t just a potential award-winning season for him — it’s a breakthrough season. He hadn’t won more than eight games in a season before, which came in 2021.
