After getting behind early, with the Raptors racing out to a spirited 7-2 edge within the first couple of minutes, the Cavs rapidly responded with a 10-0 run to tug in entrance. They by no means trailed once more.

Although the Raptors opened the second half with the identical zest, forcing Bickerstaff to name timeout simply 44 seconds into the third quarter, the Cavs answered the push and ultimately constructed their result in a game-high 30 factors. Forty-five minutes of dominance.

“We didn’t enable their physicality to rattle us,” Bickerstaff stated. “We turned that right into a power and began taking part in downhill and taking part in at pace. We had conversations like we at all times do concerning the significance of what’s in entrance of us. This was an enormous recreation for us simply to get ourselves again on observe and get our toes beneath us.”

Within the hours main as much as Sunday’s recreation, Bickerstaff had a separate heart-to-heart with Mitchell, the Cavs’ marquee participant and chief. It was temporary. It was simple. It was about setting the tone.

“I bought you,” Mitchell stated.

He backed up these phrases. Mitchell poured in a game-high 35 factors on 13 of 21 from the sector and eight of 12 from 3-point vary in three quarters of labor.

With the sport out of hand, Mitchell didn’t even play within the fourth quarter. He’s now second on the franchise’s single-season 3-point record, trailing simply former marksman JR Smith — a file Mitchell shouldn’t have any drawback breaking if he stays wholesome and continues on this tempo.

“We would have liked this one,” Mitchell stated. “We haven’t been taking part in our greatest basketball the previous two video games and it’s vital for us to grasp that in this stretch, we’ve bought to proceed to lock in and proceed to construct for the playoffs. It feels good to win this recreation, feels good to play the best way we performed. When a coach and you’ve got that discuss, you type of must go on the market and get to it.”

Middle Jarrett Allen recorded his team-leading twenty eighth double-double, scoring 23 factors to go along with 11 rebounds. Evan Mobley and Darius Garland chipped in with 18 factors apiece. Garland additionally had a game-high 11 assists towards zero turnovers.

However Sunday was about Mitchell recapturing the shape that made him an early-season MVP candidate and Japanese Convention All-Star starter. It was about Mitchell rising to the second and delivering the type of excellence that has crammed this franchise with unquantifiable hope and perception.

“Every time the lights shine brightest, Donovan exhibits up,” Bickerstaff stated. “He offers us a man who can take over at video games. We belief him and he bought it executed.”

Enjoying on the second night time of a back-to-back and with out level guard Fred VanVleet, who missed one other recreation because of the delivery of his youngster, Toronto was stifled by Cleveland’s protection all through.

The heavy-legged Raptors shot 38.7% from the sector and 36% from past the arc.

Pascal Siakam had a team-high 25 factors on 10-of-24 capturing. Commerce deadline acquisition Jakob Poeltl added 13 factors and 9 boards.

“The best way we performed as a collective effort, I really feel like everyone introduced one thing particular to the desk tonight that helped us win the sport,” Allen stated. “Once we come able to play, we’re going to carry it.”

Bickerstaff acquired 4 questions concerning the Raptors being an terrible matchup for the Cavaliers earlier than tipoff. One of many inquiries pertained to Mitchell’s particular person struggles towards Toronto.

A lot for that.

Sufficient with the discuss concerning the Raptors being Mitchell’s kryptonite. Sufficient about Mitchell’s February fade — his worst statistical scoring month of the season going into Sunday night time. Sufficient about Toronto having Cleveland’s quantity, successful the earlier three conferences. Sufficient with the Raptors having the type of bothersome fashion the Cavs’ undersized guards can’t deal with. Sufficient concerning the Cavs’ regression.

Sunday is the most effective elixir to silence all that noise.

Level of emphasis

Turnovers had been one of many bullet factors going into the sport, because the Raptors have earned a status for being handsy, bodily and feisty. The Cavs dedicated simply 14 on the night time, together with three within the first half.

NBA Rumors: J.B. Bickerstaff's Job in 'Serious Jeopardy' After Cavs' Loss to Celtics

Despite leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to back-to-back playoff appearances, including their first playoff series win without LeBron James since 1993, J.B. Bickerstaff may not return as head coach next season.

Per The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Joe Vardon and Jason Lloyd, Bickerstaff’s job is “in serious jeopardy” following the Cavs’ season-ending loss to the Boston Celtics in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Wednesday night.

The report noted a decision on Bickerstaff’s future may not be immediate, as the team “is likely to take some time—multiple days—to make a decision.”

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski added that Cavs management will have “a lot of conversations on different ways to proceed” heading into the offseason.

ESPN Sources: After an Eastern Conference semifinal loss to Celtics with short-handed lineup, Cavaliers plan to take time to evaluate coach JB Bickerstaff’s future, but organization remains fond of him and marketplace is sparse of proven candidates. There will be a lot of…

It’s hard to pin the blame for Cleveland’s loss to the Celtics in five games entirely on Bickerstaff. Donovan Mitchell missed the final two games due to a strained left calf. Jarrett Allen hasn’t played since Game 4 against the Orlando Magic in the first round because of a bruised rib.

Injuries were one of the defining stories for the 2023-24 Cavaliers. Mitchell, Darius Garland and Evan Mobley combined to miss 84 games during the regular season. Allen, Georges Niang, Max Strus, Isaac Okoro and Caris LeVert were the only players who appeared in at least 65 games.

Despite all of the injury issues, the Cavs were able to finish fourth in the Eastern Conference with a 48-34 record.

As the Cavs move into the offseason, the biggest question for the franchise is Mitchell’s future. He is under contract for two more seasons, with the second year being a player option.

Mitchell was asked numerous times during the season about potentially signing an extension, but he’s declined to directly answer those questions.

Donovan Mitchell remained non-committal on signing an extension with the Cavs after Dan Gilbert’s comments:

”I got a lot of things to focus on outside of that right now… So, I’ll handle that when it comes… I’m gonna give you the same answer.”

(Video via @CavsInsider_FN) pic.twitter.com/pDbU5PpzAJ

Cavs governor Dan Gilbert told Larry Lage of the Associated Press in March he believes Mitchell will eventually sign an extension:

“We’ve been talking to him, sure, for the last couple of years about extending this contract. We think he will extend. I think if you listen to him talk, he loves the city. He loves the situation in Cleveland because our players are very young and we’re just kind of putting the core together that he’s clearly the biggest part of.”

Even though the Cavaliers don’t have to trade Mitchell if he doesn’t re-sign this summer, it would be extremely risky for the franchise to let him play out next season and possibly lose him for nothing in free agency.

ESPN’s Bobby Marks noted Mitchell is eligible for a four-year, $208 million extension starting July 6.

While the Mitchell saga will be the biggest focus in Cleveland, Bickerstaff’s future is suddenly something else that is going to be under the microscope.

The 45-year-old Bickerstaff just finished his fifth season with the Cavaliers. He is one of the more successful head coaches in Cavs’ history, ranking fifth in games (329) and wins (170).

Bickerstaff signed an extension with the Cavs early in the 2021-22 season that runs through the 2026-27 campaign.

NBA Rumors: Darius Garland Trade Possible If Donovan Mitchell Signs New Cavs Contract

The Cleveland Cavaliers’ season came to an end Wednesday with their 113-98 loss to the Boston Celtics in Game 5 of their second-round series, and now all eyes turn toward the future.

With that in mind, Shams Charania, Joe Vardon and Jason Lloyd of The Athletic reported that Darius Garland’s representation, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, would discuss a potential trade with the team’s front office if Donovan Mitchell decides to stay in Cleveland on a long-term contract extension.

The report also noted that “rival executives believe the Cavs will have to seriously evaluate the fit of Mitchell and Garland and ultimately may have to choose one or the other.”

Mitchell is under contract for just one more season with a player option for the 2025-26 campaign.

There have been plenty of trade rumors surrounding the five-time All-Star, and everything Cleveland does this offseason will likely revolve around what happens with the go-to option.

On paper, Garland is more of a long-term option for the Cavaliers since he is signed through the 2027-28 season. The front office figures to build around him and Evan Mobley if Mitchell is ultimately traded or decides to go elsewhere, but the equation would change if he returns.

There is something to be said about Mitchell’s presence as a ball-dominant guard impacting Garland’s overall development and ceiling. Perhaps he would be better fitted somewhere else where he can be the primary option and facilitator, especially since he is still just 24 years old.

Yet he struggled without Mitchell in Wednesday’s loss and went 4-of-17 from the field. If the Cavaliers were going to have any chance at an upset win on the road without Mitchell, Caris LeVert and Jarrett Allen, they needed a better performance than that from the point guard.

But changes need to be made if Cleveland is going to compete with the likes of the Celtics and other top teams in the Eastern Conference next season and beyond.

Trading Mitchell would be something of a reset. Keeping him and trading Garland could allow the front office to get some win-now pieces in return, which might bring Cleveland a bit closer to the top of the conference.

If nothing else, the Cavaliers will be one of the teams to watch this offseason.
