Delaware in high fire danger as drought continues. Rain in the forecast

Delaware is still drought-stricken, but coming rain will provide some relief from the persistent dry pattern.

The U.S. Drought Monitor shows the entire state in a severe drought. Regionally, the drought has worsened, with parts of Burlington, Atlantic and Ocean counties in New Jersey one step above severe, at an extreme drought.

Wilmington has not had measurable rain in 41 days, and Georgetown hasn’t had measurable rain in 42 days. Both of those figures are records for most consecutive days without measurable rain. The previous records were toppled last week.

However, there is finally rain in the forecast on Sunday night. According to National Weather Service meteorologist Joe DeSilva, up to a half of an inch is possible between Sunday afternoon and Monday morning.

While that amount of rain will do little to alleviate the severe drought, DeSilva said it’s not nothing.

“It will be quite beneficial considering we’ve been so dry over the past month and a half or so,” he said. “So while it likely won’t improve the drought conditions all that much, it will be rather appreciable.”

After Sunday, Thursday and Friday offer another chance at more rain.

Before the rain, there is an enhanced risk of fire spread in the entire state. The conditions are exceptionally dry, and a red flag warning was in effect Friday because of high wind gusts and dry conditions. While it will not be as gusty, fire risk persists. An outdoor burn ban from the state fire marshal has been in effect for nearly a month.

The best chance of rain in New Castle County is between 7 p.m. on Sunday through 6 a.m. on Monday, according to forecasts from the weather service.

The best chance of rain in Kent County is between 7 p.m. on Sunday through 6 a.m. on Monday, according to forecasts from the weather service.

Veterans Day: Clearing, high 71, low 46

When will it rain in Sussex County?

The best chance of rain in Sussex County is between 7 p.m. on Sunday through 6 a.m. on Monday, according to forecasts from the weather service.

Saturday: Sunny, high 59, low 35

Sunday: Clouds increase to rain in the evening, high 65, low 56

Veterans Day: Clearing, high 74, low 47

New Delaware Hunting Law Limits Restrictions

DELAWARE – Governor Matt Meyer signed a new bill that removes the hunting restrictions on Sundays and expands the allowed ammunition.

“For most Delawareans, hunting is a weekend activity,” Rep. Spiegelman said. “Speaking on behalf of the Sportsmen’s Caucus, we all felt that removing the antiquated ban would give more working Delawareans greater access to recreational opportunities and more opportunities to enjoy these experiences with their children.”

The new law will allow hunters to pursue all game animals and game birds during hunting seasons. The law was supported by Delaware Sportsmen’s Caucus (DSC), and received wide bipartisan support, with a 19-0 win in the Senate and a 38-1 win in the House.

Sunday hunting in Delaware was originally banned due to historically observed “blue laws”, which restricts certain activities on Sundays such as specific retail items and alcohol sales. Although the other aspects were repealed decades ago, the hunting regulations continued into the 21st century. It wasn’t until 2016 when Delaware allowed deer hunting on five allotted Sundays, then expanded to include game birds in 2024.

The bill also includes looser restrictions surrounding ammunition usage within deer hunting, expanding the allowed rifles ammunition size.

“We heard from a lot of hunters who wanted to use rounds like the .400 Legend,” Rep. Spiegelman said. “This law expands the allowable caliber size to include this and other popular deer hunting rounds.”

The new law is effective immediately.

Suspect in fatal shooting inside Delaware hospital taken into custody

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — The suspect in a fatal shooting Tuesday inside a Delaware hospital has been taken into custody in Philadelphia, officials said.

The 23-year-old man is expected to be charged in the shooting at Wilmington Hospital and extradited to Delaware, the city of Wilmington said in a statement.

Officials have declined to release information about the identities of the victims or the condition of a person who was shot and survived. The city said the shooting is believed to have been targeted and isolated.

ChristianaCare, which operates the hospital, said in an emailed statement it had diverted patients from its emergency department and was “taking all appropriate steps to ensure the safety of our patients, caregivers and visitors.”

A lockdown at the hospital had been lifted by Tuesday night.

At the news conference, Wilmington Mayor John Carney acknowledged the victims and hospital workers who hid as law enforcement went from room to room, clearing the building.

“If ever there is a place that should be a sanctuary for such violence, that is the place,” Carney said.

Kristen Lackford was recovering from feeding tube surgery when her hospital room door was suddenly kicked open by law enforcement with large guns and helmets, she said.

Lackford said it was scary watching the team search under her bed and in her bathroom before marking her door with a large letter “C” and never explaining why they were there.

When she finally learned what had happened and that the shooter could still be in the building, Lackford said she felt like “a sitting duck.”

“There was absolutely nothing that I could do to make myself feel safe,” she said.

Violence has been a persistent problem at hospitals across the U.S.

Wilmington, which has about 71,000 residents and is Delaware’s largest city, is about 25 miles (40 km) south of Philadelphia.
