CONCORD — Following a significant rainfall event that brought more than six inches of rain to some areas, the New Hampshire State Police – Marine Patrol is warning boaters and swimmers to exercise extreme caution on the Connecticut River and other affected waterways.
Despite clear skies forecasted, water levels are expected to stay elevated, resulting in dangerous currents and an increased presence of river debris for the next few days.
These conditions can lead to submerged hazards, create river strainers, and cause undertows, posing risks even to experienced navigators and swimmers.
Great River Hydro, which operates dams along the Connecticut River, is specifically advising against recreational boating upstream of its facilities, highlighting the McIndoes Dam in Monroe and the Wilder Dam in Lebanon as areas of concern.
Boater Safety Buoys in these areas have been compromised, adding to the danger until they are repaired and conditions stabilize.
New Hampshire boat landings potentially impacted by the hazardous conditions include the East Wilder Boat Launch in Lebanon, Wilson’s Landing in Hanover, the Hewes Brook CT River Landing in Lyme, and the Orford Boat Launch in Orford.

Authorities are recommending that individuals avoid these areas for the time being.
However, if people choose to venture out, they should file a float plan, carry a cell phone, and wear a life jacket at all times.
