Long Island residents face renewed concerns after discovery of toxic chemicals in graveyard of contaminants

Large chemical drums found buried at a local park on Long Island have reignited anger and outrage from area officials and residents who have long feared that the park’s past may be linked to cancer’s prevalence in the community. The latest discovery has left some to believe there are more secrets to be dug up. 

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced at the end of March that six 55-gallon steel drums had been discovered encased in concrete at Bethpage Community Park as the multi-year cleanup of the contaminated site continues. The area, located in the town of Oyster Bay, is the former dumping ground for aerospace manufacturer Northrop Grumman, previously known as Grumman Aerospace. 

Preliminary testing revealed that the drums were filled with chlorinated solvents and waste oil, according to the state, which also said in a statement, “The discovery of the drums in an area of ongoing cleanup in the ball field does not present a threat to public health and safety at the site.” 

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino had a scathing rebuke of the ongoing cleanup process and called on Northrop Grumman to remove all the soil and haul it off Long Island. 

“You’re looking at Grumman’s graveyard of contamination, we’ve been telling them for years that it’s a lot worse than they’re claiming,” Saladino told Fox News while standing in front of the site’s fenced off enclosure. “Now these drums prove that, and it’s time for Grumman to get on the stick, show they’re responsible [and] clean up this site fully and ship all the contaminants off Long Island. The people of this community and this town deserve nothing less.”

The contaminated soil was first discovered at the park in 2002, and Northrop Grumman was named as a major contributor to a groundwater plume spreading from the site. 

According to a state outline for remedial actions, “At its widest point, the plume is approximately 2.1 miles wide. In most areas, the top of the groundwater plume is over 200 feet beneath the ground surface and extends to depths of approximately 900 feet beneath the ground surface.” 

The DEC says that from 1942 to 1996, Grumman Aerospace and the United States Navy used approximately 600 acres of property in Oyster Bay to manufacture military aircraft.

A tract of the land, which had been used by the company for waste disposal, was donated to the town in 1962 and later turned into a community baseball field.

There’s never been a confirmed link between the site and the cancer rates in the community, but nearby residents are increasingly joining class actions or filing personal injury lawsuits. 

Northrop Grumman has previously denied culpability or declined to comment on ongoing litigation. 

Regarding the latest discovery, a spokesperson for Northrop Grumman shared the following statement:

“While conducting environmental remediation in the Bethpage Community Park under the supervision of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), we discovered several drums encased in concrete underground in a closed area of the Park. We promptly notified NYSDEC and other relevant stakeholders and we are working with NYSDEC to assess and address this situation as quickly as possible. We remain committed to protecting the health and well-being of the community and to continuing our partnership with NYSDEC and other government regulators to address environmental conditions in the area.”

Fears of a tainted childhood 

Long Island was a beacon of opportunity for Lois Schiavetta and her family when they moved to the area decades ago. 

“I was three years old, and my dad just got out of the Navy a year before and got a job at Grumman Aerospace, and they decided we might as well move to the town we’ll be working in,” Schiavetta said.

Schiavetta said her childhood was markedly happy; she spent time with her parents, siblings and friends. 

“The ice skating rink was the Friday night thing to do, that’s where we all went to meet the boys and skate,” she said. 

Schiavetta lived three blocks away from the manufacturing operation then known as Grumman Aerospace. 

“We went swimming all the time, we played in the ballfields,” Schiavetta said. “We didn’t have parents driving us anywhere; we walked, took a bicycle, and that’s where we hung out.”

Throughout her adolescence, she noticed an alarming trend in the community.

“Every single household on the other side of the block had someone who contracted cancer of some sort.”

Now, she wonders whether the time she spent in and around the baseball field later contributed to her own cancer diagnosis. 

“I had to have a double mastectomy and go through chemotherapy – it was trying, for sure, and put a large strain on the family and my kids, but I’m still here ten years later,” she said.  

Despite the challenges, Schiavetta said she considers herself one of the lucky ones. 

“I have many friends who had multiple cancers from my high school, and it’s pretty devastating,” she said. “The numbers that I’ve seen and the names … of our class list of those who have left us.”

A lengthy court battle

I’m not surprised at all. Grumman has done everything they can … to hide the truth from the public,” Paul Napoli, a personal injury attorney on Long Island, said. “You know, they buried these barrels like they buried their heads in the sand when it comes to telling the community — they buried the truth.”

Since 2016, Napoli has been working with community members on a class action lawsuit against Northrop Grumman.

He alleged that the manufacturer’s historic operations led to expansive air pollution.

“It was actually air pollution they were emitting from 400 stacks at the site, millions of pounds of TCE into the air and thousands of pounds, by their own admission, of hexavalent chromium … and TCE is banned in New York,” Napoli said. 

Napoli further alleged that Northrop Grumman initially left its 600-acre site because it didn’t want to pay newly required costs associated with monitoring air emissions following the enactment of the Clean Air Act in 1962.

 “I always wondered why Grumman left Long Island – and the reason became pretty clear: the costs associated with putting scrubbers and air emission protection on these 400 stacks was so costly, it wasn’t worth staying in the community, and so they left, but what they left was this toxic legacy.”

Northrop Grumman still operates on nine acres in Bethpage on Long Island. 

Napoli hopes by this fall the judge will have ruled on a motion filed in his class action lawsuit against Northrop Grumman. The judge has also appointed a mediator to try and resolve the case through a settlement, the attorney added.

New York just hit pause on expanding robotaxis beyond New York City. 

Gov. Kathy Hochul has withdrawn her proposal that would have allowed commercial robotaxi services in smaller cities across the state. That means places outside New York City will not see driverless ride services anytime soon.

If you live in Buffalo, Rochester or Albany, that future just got pushed further down the road. Meanwhile, one major player still plans to move forward inside the city.

Waymo moves forward despite New York robotaxi expansion pause

Waymo, the self-driving arm of Alphabet, received its first permit last year to test autonomous vehicles in New York City. However, the permit requires a trained specialist behind the wheel. That testing permit remains in place. So, while statewide expansion is off the table for now, Waymo’s New York City testing program continues. The company already offers paid driverless rides in parts of:

  • The San Francisco Bay Area
  • Los Angeles
  • Phoenix
  • Austin
  • Atlanta

According to company data and state regulators in Arizona and California, Waymo has logged millions of fully autonomous miles. Arizona transportation officials have reported lower crash rates per mile compared with human drivers in certain operational zones. California’s DMV and Public Utilities Commission continue to monitor safety performance and incident reporting.

The company says it hears from thousands of New Yorkers who have ridden in Waymo vehicles elsewhere and want the service at home. Still, expanding beyond the city now faces a political roadblock.

Why Hochul pulled the New York robotaxi expansion plan

The governor’s office said support was not there in the state Legislature after conversations with stakeholders. That language matters. Self-driving vehicle rules involve state lawmakers, labor groups, local officials, safety advocates and insurance regulators. Expanding robotaxi services into smaller cities likely raised concerns about:

  • Safety oversight
  • Liability rules
  • Local job impact
  • Emergency response coordination

Autonomous vehicle deployment remains under intense scrutiny nationwide. After a high-profile incident involving Cruise in San Francisco in 2023, regulators tightened oversight. Cruise later suspended operations, and General Motors scaled back its robotaxi ambitions. Waymo has not recorded a similar major injury event in public reporting. That distinction has helped it expand in states like Arizona and Texas. Even so, public trust remains fragile.

In the meantime, companies like Waymo continue refining software using real-world miles and sensor data. The more data they collect, the stronger their safety case becomes. Yet public perception often hinges on a single viral incident. Technology evolves quickly. Regulation moves more slowly.

Investigation underway after daylight shooting in Dorchester leaves person hospitalized – Boston News, Weather, Sports | WHDH 7News


BOSTON (WHDH) – Police are investigating a shooting in Dorchester on Saturday afternoon that left a person hospitalized, officials said.

Officers responding to a reported shooting in the area of 480 Quincy St. around 3 p.m. found a person suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, according to Boston police. The person was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for their injuries.

Ballistic evidence was recovered nearby in the area of Coleman Street.

No arrests have been made.

Pirates Prospects Deliver Victory Over Tigers


PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates needed production from their best prospects and they got exactly that in their most recent Spring Training game.

The Pirates outlasted the Detroit Tigers in a 5-3 win at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Fla., thanks to some important hits from their best young talent.

Pittsburgh finally ends their surprising three-game losing streak, as they lost both games in the split squad day on March 6, 9-2 to the Toronto Blue Jays at TD Ballpark in Dunedin and then 14-10 to the Philadelphia Philies at LECOM Park in Bradenton, plus a 3-2 defeat to the St. Louis Cardinals at home on March 5.

The Pirates improve to 10-5 in the Grapefruit League and the Tigers fall to 3-7, tied for the least wins.

How the Pirates Got the Victory

The Pirates got going in the top of the second inning, as left fielder Jhostynxon Garcia singled and then center fielder Dominic Fletcher got hit by a pitch, before right fielder Esmerlyn Valdez singled to score both runners and made it to second base on the error.

Designated hitter Termarr Johnson made it his second straight day with an RBI-single, scoring Valdez and putting the Pirates up 3-0.

Pirates left-handed pitcher Hunter Barco made his second Grapefruit League start and threw two scoreless innings before struggling in the third inning.

Barco loaded the bases and then gave up a ground-rule double and a ground out, scoring all three runners to tie the game up at 3-3.

Both teams struggled to score runs before the Pirates got things going in the top of the sixth inning, with catcher Henry Davis walking and then first baseman Enmanuel Valdez singling, putting runners on the corners.

Garcia grounded into a double play, but scored Davis and put Pittsburgh up 4-3 over Detroit.

The Pirates loaded the bases after this, but third baseman Duce Gorson popped out and they held onto their one-run game.

Mitch Jebb led off the top of the eighth inning with a triple and Yordanny De Los Santos would single soon after to bring him home and double the Pirates lead at 5-3.

De Los Santos, a minor leaguer, has had a great showing in the Grapefruit League for the Pirates, slashing .556/.600/1.667 and an OPS of 2.267 in six games, with a league-high eight RBI and also three home runs.

Pirates Get Good Pitching to Take Down the Tigers

Right-handed relief pitcher Michael Walsh, a ninth round pick out of Yale in 2022, threw a scoreless fourth inning and then fellow right-handed relief pitcher Justin Lawrence continued his solid spring with a scoreless fifth inning

The Pirates then went with right-handed pitcher Thomas Harrington in the sixth inning and he would put on his best showing of the Grapefruit League, throwing four scoreless innings to get the save.

Harrington hardly faced any trouble in his outing, with just two hits and a walk allowed, with two strikeouts, getting a number of groundballs and mixing up his vast arsenal of pitches.

This isn’t the first time Harrington got a four-inning save, doing so last year in his PNC Park debut in an 8-4 victory. Harrington became the first Pirates pitcher that earned a four-inning save since Jason Christiansen did so in a 5-1 win over the Montreal Expos on July 17, 1998.
