High winds, rain and snow headed to Utah, making for a blustery week

The winds could snatch up debris, damage property and cause power outages.

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Strong winds blow dust across Interstate 80 near the south shore of the Great Salt Lake on Wednesday, March 29, 2023. High winds expected in Utah on Thursday and Friday could make travel difficult for high-profile vehicles.

Valley rain, mountain snow and dangerously high winds are all headed for Utah this week.

On Thursday and Friday, there’s a 60% chance of strong downslope winds across Weber, Davis and northern Salt Lake counties, especially near the mouths of canyons — including Ogden Canyon, Weber Canyon, Farmington Canyon and in Bountiful, according to the National Weather Service.

From Bountiful to Ogden, there’s a 60% chance of gusts exceeding 60 mph. Gusts could exceed 50 mph in other areas, the weather service advised.

High winds could snatch up debris, damage property and cause power outages. And crosswinds could make travel difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles and vehicles with trailers along on Interstate 15 and U.S. Route 89, according to the weather service.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday in higher elevations along northern Utah, where heavy snow is possible. About 6-12 inches of mountain snow is possible, with about 15 inches possible in the upper Cottonwood canyons.

In Salt Lake City, after chances of rain Tuesday, there’s a 30% chance of snow on Wednesday, though little to no accumulation is expected. The forecast calls for highs in the low 40s on Wednesday followed by the low 50s on Thursday and Friday.

This weekend, Salt Lake City can expect highs in the mid-50s on Saturday and the upper 50s on Sunday, followed by the low 60s on Monday.

In St. George, mostly sunny skies are expected Wednesday and Thursday, with temperatures in the mid-50s to about 60. There’s a slight chance of rain on Thursday night, and a chance of rain possibly mixed with snow on Friday, but little to no accumulation is expected.

The sun should return there for the weekend, with temperatures in the 60s expected.
