Safeway employees join the picket line at several locations in Southern Colorado
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – On Sunday, some Safeway employees formed picket lines to fight what they say are unfair labor practices. Strikes happened at stores in Fountain, Pueblo, Estes Park and a distribution center in Denver.
Tom Olson was one of several of those workers, past and present, in Fountain.
“As a former Safeway employee, it just makes me sad that they won’t support the people that make the money for them,” Olson said, “they’re trying to take money away from the healthcare plans of both the retirees and the active members.”
Tom told 11 News he worked for Safeway for 15 years, and that he’s participated in multiple strikes over the years.
“It’s really to bring the company to the table, to move the negotiations along, because they’re not doing that,” Olson said, “it’s really an example of corporate greed.”
We reached out to the company that owns Safeway, Albertsons, who tells us,
“Safeway in Colorado remains committed to productive discussions with UFCW Local 7. We respect the rights of workers to engage in collective bargaining and are negotiating in good faith to achieve an agreement. Our focus remains on providing exceptional service to our customers and fostering a positive working environment for our associates. All Safeway and Albertsons stores in Colorado are open and ready to continue serving our communities.”
So far, the union hasn’t said how long the strike will last, but stores in Colorado Springs will be voting this week on whether they will join the strike.

WELD COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) – A Denver man was sentenced to 48 years in prison after pleading guilty to attempting to traffic illegal drugs to Weld County, according to the 19th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
The DA said Colorado State Troopers pulled over Miguel Gutierrez-Heredia in Fruita on March 26, 2024, for going 93 mph in a 75 mph speed zone.
At the time of the traffic stop, the DA says authorities were tracking his whereabouts in connection with a drug trafficking investigation. Investigators concluded that Gutierrez-Heredia had gone to California to pick up narcotics that would eventually be distributed in Denver and Northern Colorado.
During the traffic stop, authorities reportedly found nearly 100,000 fentanyl pills, nearly five pounds of cocaine, and more than two and a half pounds of methamphetamine in Gutierrez-Heredia’s vehicle.
Gutierrez-Heredia pled guilty in May to one count of conspiracy to sell or distribute fentanyl – more than 50 grams, one count of special offender – introducing or importing to the state of Colorado, and one count of possession with intent to sell or distribute methamphetamine – more than 14 grams but less than 225 grams.
“At the time of this interception, this was one of the biggest fentanyl busts in the state,” Chief Deputy District Attorney Michael Pirraglia said.
District Attorney Pirraglia and Deputy District Attorney Katherine Fitzgerald prosecuted this case. Weld County District Court Judge Vincente Vigil handed down the sentence.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park remains closed as Colorado’s South Rim Fire burns without containment
A wildfire that’s burning in the southern part of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in western Colorado has grown to more than 1,600 acres. It has damaged some park equipment and several outbuildings.
The South Rim Fire is believed to have started on Thursday after a lightning strike. The national park was evacuated as a precaution and remained closed on Friday.
Federal wildfire management officials said they are working on structure protection within the park, including the visitor center.
The fire was listed at 1,640 acres during the day on Friday and so far there’s no containment on it.
Some pre-evacuation notices have been sent to residents in Montrose County. There are no mandatory evacuation orders currently in place.
Weather conditions on Friday aren’t helping with the firefight. The relative humidity is low and temperatures are in the high 80s.
Highway 347 is closed at the junction of Highway 50 due to the fire.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been considering opening several detention facilities in Colorado, according to the ACLU.
The ACLU said six potential locations were considered in Colorado, and two of those potential facilities were in Colorado Springs. Those locations were outlined in documents obtained by the ACLU.
Records said one of those locations up for consideration was at 2923 East Las Vegas Street in Colorado Springs. They said that the building has been closed since March 2020, since GEO Group, a private prison corporation, lost its contract with the facility.
The second location under consideration was located at 3625 Parkmoor Village Drive in Colorado Springs. Records said the building owned by the Baptiste Group was last used as a skilled nursing facility in 2024.
The other locations under consideration throughout the state are La Junta, Hudson and two potential facilities in Walsenburg.
The El Paso County Commissioners, Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade, and Colorado Governor Jared Polis have shared statements with 11 News regarding ICE facilities in Colorado.
