Alleged DUI driver plows car into SoCal construction scaffolding, causing it to come crashing down

Shocking video captured the moment an alleged DUI driver crashed their car into construction scaffolding on the side of a building in Hermosa Beach, causing the entire structure to come crashing down on top of the vehicle.

It happened on Thursday around 3:30 p.m. near the Hermosa Pier. Patrol officers said they were just finishing up a drunk in public arrest in the same general area when they were called to the crash in the 1000 block of Beach Drive.

When they arrived at the scene, they found the car buried under a large pile of scaffolding, with the driver still at the scene.

The driver was determined to be intoxicated and was placed under arrest. A breath test determined his blood alcohol level was 2 and a half times the legal limit, Hermosa Beach PD said.

Luckily, no injuries were reported.

Video shows several people walking near the structure before the incident, but they were far enough away by the time it happened that they were not impacted.

Hermosa Beach PD is urging everyone to drive sober, especially when many are going out in the city to watch the World Cup at local establishments.

HBPD said it has stepped up enforcement and will have extra officers specifically looking for drunk drivers throughout the World Cup.
