Protestors in Southern California rally against DA George Gascón

A group of demonstrators, many of whom have lost loved ones to violence, met in San Pedro Sunday alongside the candidate running to unseat Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón, to protest what they believe has been a lack of focus by the current administration to bring justice to parents and families of victims who have been murdered.

Uloma Anyanwu, a nurse, was among dozens of people who turned out for the event, some of them carrying photographs and posters of their loved ones who were killed as they spoke out against the DA.

Anyanwu told KTLA that she lost her son in March 2022.

“He went to pick up his girlfriend from an establishment where she worked and, unfortunately, a predator just came to his car and shot him dead,” she said.

According to Anyanwu, the suspect had three priors and was on probation when the violence occurred and has yet to be arrested.

“Every day I get up and live my pain,” she said.

Nathan Hochman, former United States Assistant Attorney General and Mr. Gascón’s competitor for L.A. County District Attorney, was present at the event. Flanked by many of those in attendance, Hochman took the photo opportunity and a swipe at the DA.

“Our current DA, Gascón, has basically sent a message to these victims that they are not his focus. He is not here today,” Hochman told KTLA. “I am here today to send the clear and unmistakable message that these victims, who have suffered the tragedy of having their children murdered, will be the focus of my administration.”

KTLA has reached out to Gascón’s office for a response to Hochman’s statement.

The DA last week made several high-profile announcements, including charges against a convicted felon accused of breaking into the official home of L.A. Mayor Karen Bass, as well as charges against a man that allegedly shot a uniformed L.A. County deputy in the back and murder charges against a 45-year-old homeless man believed to have fatally stabbed a 67-year-old woman in the throat on a Metro train.

With a little more than six months until the Nov. 5 election, the DA’s office was also hit last week with news that one of its top advisors to Gascón, Ethics and Integrity Assistant DA Diana Teran, has been charged by the state attorney general’s office with 11 felony violations.

Orange County grandfather killed in hit-and-run rollover crash

Loved ones are devastated after a beloved grandfather was killed in a rollover crash and the suspect remains at large.

The victim was identified as Allen Yangkaou Lee, 67, according to the Irvine Police Department.

The crash happened on May 9 as Allen was driving northbound on Culver Drive towards Trabuco Road in Irvine at around 4:30 p.m.

As he passed an intersection, the suspect jutted out and made a right turn against a red light.

The sudden movement of the suspect’s car forced Allen to swerve so he would avoid crashing into the suspect.

The maneuver caused Allen to lose control of his car, causing a rollover crash. His vehicle collided with a center median, a tree and a light pole before landing on its roof.

The suspect, who was driving a beige Honda Civic, did not stop to help and fled the scene.

Paramedics rushed Allen to a local hospital where he died from his injuries on May 13. His loved ones are devastated as they remember the beloved father and grandfather.

“He was such a generous and very caring man,” said Elaine Lee, the victim’s daughter. “He was everything. It was so sudden and it really does feel like there is a hole. He was ripped from our lives unfairly.”

Allen’s family is hoping the suspect will be caught soon and said they are grateful for the good Samaritans who stopped to help Allen after the crash.

“He is loved,” said Eric Lee, the victim’s son. “Thank you to all the people who got out of their cars. Complete strangers reached into a car that was completely twisted metal, crushed. They could’ve cut themselves, maybe they did, and they all tried [to help].”

His family and loved ones remain in mourning as they remember Allen as someone who loved to help others in need.

“He was always helping people, so if people can help us find this person so they don’t do this again, I think that would be justice,” Elaine said.

Police said the dash cam video from Allen’s car has been crucial in helping them collect evidence in the case.

The suspect’s vehicle is described as a 2008-2011 beige Honda Civic. The car has unique racing-style decals on the lower doors on both sides. There appears to be red material on the door handles as well.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has footage of the incident is asked to call Detective Christopher Ostrowski at 949-724-7047.

Man, 71, pleads guilty in murder of brother-in-law in Southern California

A 71-year-old man is facing 25 years to life in prison for the 2020 shooting death of his brother-in-law in Ventura County, authorities announced Tuesday.

Prosecutors say that in late 2019 Elsworth Dennis Cadle’s estranged wife and daughter were living with his sister and brother-in-law, Mark Milton, but by January 2020, they planned to move into their own apartment, a news release from the Ventura County District Attorney’s office stated.

In order to pick up her and her daughter’s belongings from Cadle’s apartment, his estranged wife and brother-in-law rented a U-Haul truck they were also using to gather belongings from a storage unit in Moorpark rented by Milton and his wife.

Cadle spotted Milton at the Moorpark self-storage unit on Jan. 3, 2020, authorities said. He then immediately rented a vehicle, retrieved his firearm and returned to the storage unit where he found his brother-in-law sitting in the cab of the U-Haul truck.

“Cadle shot Mr. Milton one time in the left side of the head and fled,” prosecutors said.

Several hours later, Cadle was taken into custody by deputies with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, who recovered the gun in the center console of the rental car.

The 71-year-old has since pleaded guilty to second-degree murder of Mark Milton and admitted to the special allegation that “he personally and intentionally discharged a firearm resulting in death,” the release stated.

“This is a tragic case and now that the defendant took responsibility for taking his brother-in-law’s life, the family can begin to heal,” Supervising Senior Deputy DA Melissa Suttner, who prosecuted the case, said.

A sentencing hearing for Cadle is schedule for late June in the Ventura County Superior Court.

Knott's Berry Farm delays opening for updated Camp Snoopy area

The debut of the new and improved Camp Snoopy, originally slated to open Memorial Day weekend, has been delayed. The land’s reopening date has been pushed back until June or July, according to multiple reports.

New additions, such as rides, dining and improved experiences are slated to come to the kiddie land in what will be the first extensive overhaul of the area in a decade.

The last time the theme park updated Camp Snoopy was in 2014 for its 30th anniversary, according to the Orange County Register.

Some of the new rides and experiences coming to the land include a new family coaster, an updated off-road rally face attraction and a super-sized swing suitable for kids and adults.

The updated plan for Camp Snoopy also includes a new theater, an updated version of Woodstock’s Airmail now known as Camp Post Office, a brand new lookout terrace area known as Barrell Bridge and Waterfall, updated dining at Grizzly Lodge and more.

At Barrell Bridge and Waterfall, guests can earn merit badges and explore the great outdoors. Parents can relax while their children participate in the activities.
