Orange County minors stole vehicle, caused deadly hit-and-run crash, police say

A juvenile crashed a stolen car while being pursued by officers in Garden Grove, killing a 34-year-old man in the process, according to authorities.

Police said officers found a vehicle reported to be stolen in the area of Taft Street and Garden Grove Boulevard at 9:45 p.m. Saturday. When the officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver attempted to flee the scene by going southbound on Taft.

The driver then crashed into three other vehicles just about one-half mile south in the intersection of Taft and Trask Avenue. The driver, a juevenile, then attempted to flee the scene on foot before being caught and detained by police.

An unidentified passenger in the stolen vehicle successfully fled the scene, according to authorities. That person remains at large.

One of them, 34-year-old Kevin Luu of Garden Grove, was later pronounced dead. The other victim remains in critical condition.

The unidentified juvenile suspect was treated for minor injuries before being booked into Juvenile Hall.

Police did not immediately say what charges the suspect may face as a result of the incident. Drugs or alcohol are believed to be a factor, authorities said.

No additional details were immediately made available.

Father’s Day tribute to Vietnam veteran Lupe Arellano

A very special Father’s Day tribute was held today for Lupe Arellano, a Vietnam veteran, cancer survivor and father of seven kids.

“He never wants anything in return,” his daughter-in-law MaryJane Arellano explained. “He’s just about giving.”

Family says that after he came home from Vietnam, his desire to serve showed in his work ethic, working two jobs Monday through Friday while he helped raise seven children.

“I’m a firefighter and there’s been many times when I’m at work and my dad comes to my rescue,” his son Danny said. “He’s basically my 911.”

Danny and two of his brothers, Eric and Jayme, all work for the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Lupe’s youngest son, Andrew, works as an officer with the Los Angeles Police Department.

“That’s all we ever knew, was service and teamwork,” Lupe’s daughter Lizette Revils, who works as a nurse, said. “There’s no finer man around than my dad.”

Lupe, who comes from a large family himself, said he feels very proud of all his children, five boys and two girls.

“All my kids have achieved something,” he said. “The wife and I have kind of helped them along sometimes, but not always. All parents want to help their kids along somehow. If I’m a very small part of that, I’m very proud.”

KTLA Photojournalist Phil Ige contributed to this report.

Los Angeles police identify knife-wielding woman shot and killed by officers on Saturday

The Los Angeles Police department has identified the woman shot and killed by officers while wielding a knife and threatening family members before turning the knife onto law enforcement.

Officers responded to an apartment building on the 9400 block of Van Nuys Boulevard in Panorama City at 12:50 a.m. Saturday on reports of a woman attempting to assault family members with a knife. The person who called authorities reported that the woman was blocking the family members from leaving the apartment.

Upon arrival, officers staged on a second-floor landing of the apartment building, just outside the unit’s door. After unsuccessfully attempting to speak to the woman, officers heard a loud banging noise and the woman’s screams, police said.

Officers then forced entry into the apartment, believing that the woman was attempting to “gain access” to the victims. Once inside, they encountered the woman and again shouted orders at her to drop the knife.

She refused, police said, and charged officers while holding up the knife. Officers simultaneously tased and shot her at that moment.

The woman was transported to a local hospital, where she later died. On Sunday, police identified her as 23-year-old Joanna Lua.

No other injuries were reported. A 10-inch bread knife was recovered at the scene.
