Mudslide closes another portion of PCH in Malibu

A mudslide closed a third portion of Pacific Coast Highway in the Malibu area Friday morning.

The highway was initially shut down in both directions at the 20200 block, a little west of Big Rock, due to the slide, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department posted at 8:50 a.m. on X, formerly Twitter.

Video shared by the Sheriff’s Department showed a bulldozer pushing rocks and debris off of the closed highway.

Traffic on the impacted stretch of PCH through Malibu had backed up significantly by the time the eastbound lanes and one westbound lane reopened shortly before 9:30 a.m.

One lane is still closed as of Friday with officials not planning to fully reopen the area until after a storm that is forecast to hit later this weekend.

A third closure remains in effect in both directions on Malibu Canyon Road following a mudslide on Wednesday.
