Homeless woman charged with murder in Santa Monica shooting
A 27-year-old woman suspected in the deadly shooting of a motorist in Santa Monica last week was charged with murder Tuesday, police announced.
Los Angeles resident William Edwards III, 46, was found seated in his parked car in grave condition following a shots fired report on Jan. 25. Edwards later died at a hospital.
The suspect, identified as Kayla Delise Mackie, was located the following morning in West Los Angeles where she was taken into custody.
Further investigation revealed that Mackie, who police described as “currently experiencing homelessness,” was allegedly responsible for additional crimes in Los Angeles, including an armed robbery and an attempted homicide, the Santa Monica Police Department posted in a news release on X, formerly Twitter.
Police still have not determined a motive for the shooting, which Santa Monica Mayor Phil Brock called “senseless.”
“Last week’s senseless killing on 29th Street has left all of us shocked. My heart goes out to William’s family and friends, and my thoughts are with all who were affected by this tragic event,” Brock said in a statement.
The District Attorney on Tuesday filed a murder charge against Mackie for the Santa Monica homicide as well as additional charges related to the other incidents, police said.
The Santa Monica Police Department said witness descriptions were crucial in identifying and locating Mackey and thanked the public for their assistance.
