Armed domestic violence suspect shot by L.A. police on live TV dies
A 37-year-old domestic violence suspect who led police on a dramatic pursuit before pulling two guns on officers on live television has died a day after police opened fire on him, officials announced Wednesday.
The harrowing Nov. 26 ordeal unfolded at around 12:15 p.m. when officers with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Harbor Division responded to an assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence suspect in the area of South Gaffey and West 19th streets in San Pedro.
The suspect, later identified as Aundre Jones, was following a public transit bus operated by a woman he had a child with and a prior dating relationship, police said.
Behind the wheel of a white Maserati and armed with two 9mm semiautomatic handguns, Jones led police in a high-speed chase on the 110 Freeway after refusing to pull over.
As the chase continued, footage captured by Sky5 shows the 37-year-old pulling into the rear parking lot of a West Adams apartment complex in the 4100 block of Jefferson Boulevard.
Dramatic footage then shows Jones step out of the sports car in a hooded sweatshirt, walk down the alley toward the officers, pull two guns from his pockets and firing multiple rounds at officer.
Police returned fire, dropping the 37-year-old to the ground.
“Officers placed Jones in a recovery position and monitored him until the arrival of Los Angeles Fire Department personnel, who transported Jones to a local hospital where he was admitted for treatment,” an LAPD news release stated.
On Wednesday, the 37-year-old succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by medical staff.
A female bystander who was approaching Jones when gunfire broke out was also struck in the arm before retreating. Officers rendered aid until paramedics arrived and took her to the hospital where she was treated and released.
No officers or other community members were injured during the incident.
LAPD’s Force Investigation Division responded to the scene and is investigating the deadly officer-involved shooting.
