Kari Lake wins GOP nod, setting up general election battle with Gallego for Sinema's seat

Kari Lake won the Republican Senate primary in Arizona on Tuesday evening, setting up a heated race against Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., in November for the open seat being vacated by Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, I-Ariz.

Lake defeated Pinal County, Arizona Sheriff Mark Lamb for the nomination.

Gallego won his bid for the Democratic nomination to the Senate as well, officially securing the party’s nod to succeed Sinema.

Lake initially ran for governor of the state in 2022 but was defeated by now-Gov. Katie Hobbs, D-Ariz. Prior to her gubernatorial run, Lake was a news anchor for a local Arizona television station and had been working in the media for 27 years.

Lake challenged the results following her gubernatorial election loss. She still contends that there were significant irregularities in 2020 and 2022, echoing claims that former President Trump and a great number of his supporters have made about the elections. The concern has led to the Republican National Committee (RNC) devoting significant time and money to election integrity efforts.

Lamb has been sheriff in Pinal County since being elected in 2017. He rose to prominence in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he refused to enforce a stay-at-home order from Republican then-Gov. Doug Ducey.

“It’s unfortunate that we’re here, but I need to make a stand for the people and for freedom,” he said at the time, according to the Associated Press. “I don’t want to cite, fine or arrest fine people.”

Consequences for violating the Arizona pandemic-era order included fines of $2,500 and up to six months of jail time.

Lake had an advantage in the Senate competition with significant name recognition already from her 2022 campaign. Further, she enjoyed Trump’s endorsement as well as numerous other Republican lawmakers.

With Sinema’s decision to leave the Democratic Party and not to run for re-election in Arizona, Gallego ended up running unopposed in the Democratic primary race.

Gallego and Lake will now face off in the general election on Nov. 5.

Arizona’s open Senate seat is rated as “Lean Democratic” by non-partisan political handicapper the Cook Political Report. It is joined in the category by Senate races in swing states Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, which both have Democratic incumbents.

2 arrested after wild pursuit ends on railroad tracks

Authorities arrested two suspects following a chaotic pursuit on surface streets, a freeway and railroad tracks in Riverside Friday night.

Preliminary reports indicate that officers were dispatched to calls of shots being fired in the 2900 block of Prospect Avenue around 7 p.m.

Riverside Police Department officials confirmed to KTLA early Saturday morning that a man was reportedly shot in the arm or shoulder.

Upon arriving, officers observed a vehicle that was said to have matched the description of the one connected to the alleged shooting and began a pursuit.

The car, which appeared to be a newer model Ford Mustang SUV, fled on city streets and eventually onto the 91 Freeway where it collided with the center divider multiple times.

The suspect vehicle then exited freeway at Spruce Street where it “intentionally” drove on to the railroad tracks in an attempt to get away from officers, RPD said; however, the vehicle became disabled a short distance away.

Video obtained by KTLA shows the disabled SUV sitting on the tracks with damage to one of its rear tires.

Police confirmed that the man and woman inside the car both exited the vehicle and surrendered.  The male suspect was seen being loaded onto a gurney and into an ambulance while the woman was placed in the back of a squad car.

The victim of the shooting was said to have been transported to a nearby hospital by friends or family, authorities added.

Republican wins primary for Ruben Gallego's House seat but remains long shot in November

Pro-Trump GOP candidate Jeff Zink won Tuesday’s primary in Arizona’s deep-blue 3rd Congressional District.

Zink defeated 29-year-old Jesús David Mendoza, a software engineer and political newcomer who ran as the more moderate Republican in the race.

Zink, who unsuccessfully ran for the seat in 2022, previously made headlines for being one of the thousands of people who attended former President Trump’s Jan. 6, 2021 “Stop The Steal” rally, which was followed by a riot at the U.S. Capitol.

Despite the victory, he’s still a long shot candidate to win Arizona’s most heavily-Democratic congressional district.

The area is majority Latino and Hispanic, encompassing significant portions of Phoenix.

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report ranks it D+24, making it the most left-wing congressional district in Arizona.

It’s being vacated at the end of this year by Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., who is running for Senate against Republican candidate Kari Lake in November.

Gallego represented the district from the beginning of 2023, having previously held Arizona’s 7th Congressional District from 2015.

The progressive military veteran is expected to be formally named the Democratic candidate to succeed Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, I-Ariz., who is not seeking re-election.

Arsonist burns down Southern California family's home, killing beloved cat

Arsonist burns down Southern California family's home, killing beloved cat

A Southern California family is devastated after an arsonist set their home on fire, killing their beloved cat and destroying everything they own.

On July 31, at around noontime, the Majano family was away from their Pasadena home.

Mitzi Majano and her two children — a 13-year-old son and an 11-year-old daughter — were enjoying a summer day at a local water park.

Her husband, Nassan Majano, was serving drinks from a coffee truck he operates, parked just down the street from their home.

That’s when a neighbor suddenly ran up to Nassan telling him his house was on fire.

The frightened family rushed back to their home to a heartbreaking discovery — nearly everything they owned had been burned to the ground.

Although the family was uninjured, their beloved cat, Oreo, was trapped in the blaze and did not survive. Oreo was adopted during the pandemic to provide comfort to the family.

“We actually tried to save her,” Nassan said. “We knocked down the door and tried to break into the house but it was impossible to get inside. The flames were way too high. The heat was intense.”

“We have maybe 5% of what we own,” Mitzi said tearfully. “I’d rather have zero [belongings] and have my cat back. He helped my kids during the pandemic so much. So after this, it’s even harder.”

The suspect who torched the home was later arrested and identified as a homeless man. Police said the incident appeared to be random.

“He actually claimed, immediately, that he did it,” Nassan said of the arsonist.

For now, the family is going through the rubble and salvaging whatever they can as neighbors and loved ones help the family rebuild their lives.

The parents said their children are having a hard time coping with the shocking events. They said they are leaning on their faith to help them endure this difficult period.

“Everything in the kitchen was burned, but my son had left his backpack with his Bible on the table and it didn’t catch on fire at all,” Mitzi said.

Officials from the American Red Cross and a local food bank are helping the Majano family who remain displaced for now.

A GoFundMe page to help the family recover can be found here.
