VolReport – 2026 Mississippi ATH Sharroid Whitehead ‘starstruck’ by Tennessee offer

Josh Heupel and Tennessee have proven over and over again that there are a few states that the Vols plan to recruit – and recruit hard.

Mississippi is one of those states, and the Vols are continuing to attack that state.

2026 Ocean Springs (Miss.) athlete Sharroid Whitehead is an underclassman that many need to circle and remember the name of, as he is picking up a lot of buzz on the recruiting front.

“It’s (the recruiting process) going great,” Whitehead told VolReport.

VolReport dives in a bit deeper to find out more about Whitehead’s recruitment and a specific recent offer.

The 5-foot-9, 175-pound playmaker already holds a bit more than a handful of offers. Oklahoma, Penn State, Virginia Tech and UCLA are among the early offers for the 10th-grade stud.

“A lot of schools have been reaching out,” Whitehead told VolReport. “As of right now, Penn State is showing crazy love and trying to get me up there as soon as possible.”

If some of the mentioned schools are already contacting the young star, the offer list will not only grow in overall number – but also in terms of big-name schools pursuing him.

“Alabama, Ohio State and Texas A&M have been showing a lot of love to me and are most likely going to offer me after this season,” Whitehead said.

Recently, Whitehead received a stunning offer from Tennessee – which blew him away.

“I just got the offer that I have wanted all summer,” he said in regards to receiving the news from the Vols.

“When I got the Tennessee offer, I was at a loss for words,” Whitehead said. “I was just starstruck because who wouldn’t want to play on Rocky Top?”

As Whitehead is listed as an athlete, it appears that the Vols are early evaluating the 2026 prospect as a running back as Jerry Mack and Kirk Norwood are both on the trail and “they love my speed,” according to Whitehead.

Coach Mack, the running backs coach for Tennessee, seems very intrigued and impressed with the current status and potential for Whitehead.

“He loves what I can do with the ball in my hands everywhere on the field. He also says I fit the explosive Tennessee offense,” Whitehead said. “I could see myself in the offense because I’m an explosive guy myself, plus I can play anywhere, so I feel like I would be a great fit.”

This recruitment has a good way to go before it is anywhere near finished, but the Vols have themselves in a great position. One of the first 10 schools to offer, and with their brand of offense, had already been noticed by this prospect as Tennessee is the school he had waited for all summer.

Now, what does Tennessee do from here?

“I just wanna hear them winning. … Some good talks from the fans and the coaches,” Whitehead said.”

It seems that Whitehead is going to help much of that come true as he already has some goals for this fall when it comes to college visits. There is nothing set in stone between the Mississippi native and Tennessee just yet, but that should work itself out very soon as Whitehead is certainly ready for a trip to Knoxville.

“I will most definitely be on Rocky Top soon,” he said.

Tennessee vs. Auburn predictions, picks and best bets: Can the Tigers stay undefeated in SEC play?

Top-ranked Auburn’s undefeated conference record is on the line Saturday night when No. 6 Tennessee makes the trip to Neville Arena. The Tigers already notched impressive wins over Houston, Iowa State and Purdue, but facing the Volunteers could be the toughest game yet.

Home-court advantage will be crucial, as Auburn’s only loss of the season came on the road. The Tigers are a 6.5-point favorite and the total is set at 140.5. Let’s get into my betting picks for the must-see matchup between Tennessee and Auburn.

Tennessee vs. Auburn predictions and best bets

  • Auburn -6.5: -115 at FanDuel Sportsbook
  • Under 140.5: -106 at FanDuel Sportsbook

*Note: Odds are based on the best value our experts find as of publication; check lines closer to game time to ensure you get the best odds.

Auburn benefits from a week of rest leading up to the top-10 clash. With a daunting SEC schedule, the time off gives the Tigers a chance to reset before an extremely important game.

Tennessee is one of the best teams in the nation, but the Volunteers’ two losses came on the road. This includes an upset loss against unranked Vanderbilt. According to TeamRankings, Auburn is 5-2-1 against the spread at Neville Arena, while Tennessee is 2-3 ATS in away games.

Johni Broome’s status is the biggest storyline heading into the game. The Wooden Award candidate has missed back-to-back games with an ankle injury, but head coach Bruce Pearl said Broome could return to practice at the end of the week.

Auburn has chugged along without Broome, notching a pair of ranked wins over Mississippi State and Georgia. The Tigers haven’t shown signs of regression without Broome in the lineup, so I’ll take Auburn to cover the spread.

I’m also betting the under because both teams play lockdown defense. Tennessee surrenders the third-fewest points in the nation, while Auburn allows just 66 points per game. The under is 7-4 when the Volunteers and Tigers square off with SEC opponents.

Tennessee vs. Auburn moneyline odds analysis

Why Auburn could win as the favorite

Odds: -285 at FanDuel Sportsbook

Broome suiting up would be massive for the Tigers. The senior forward leads the team in scoring, assists, rebounding and blocks, but may not play at the same level after sitting for two weeks.

If Broome isn’t ready to return, Auburn has proven it can contend without the big man, thanks to a deep roster that includes five other players averaging double-digit scoring. Chaney Johnson has gotten more minutes due to Broome’s injury and made the most of the opportunity with a 17-point performance in a blowout win over Mississippi State.

Freshman Tahaad Pettiford has been a game-changer for Auburn, and he’ll need another big game to take down the Volunteers. Pettiford is hitting 44% of his shots from beyond the arc and poured in a season-high 24 points in Auburn’s last game.

Why Tennessee could win as the underdog

Odds: +230 at FanDuel Sportsbook

Strong defense hasn’t forced the Volunteers to sacrifice scoring opportunities on the other end of the court. Chaz Lanier and Zakai Zeigler combine to average just under 31 points per game, and Tennessee ranks seventh in offensive rebounding, per KenPom.

However, the Volunteers couldn’t buy a bucket in a 73-43 road loss versus Florida. Tennessee shot just 21.4% from the field and Zeigler and Lanier were the only players to reach double digits.

Auburn’s lengthy defenders block more shots per game than any team in the nation, and Tennessee can’t solely rely on Lanier and Zeigler to carry the load offensively. Jordan Gainey and Igor Milicic Jr. must step up to keep pace with the Tigers.

Warmer days ahead for the Tennessee Valley

Happy Friday! We are waking up to another cold morning with temperatures in the 20S. Temperatures will slowly rebound into the 40s with a mix of sun and clouds. A few mountain flurries will be possible in the morning, but most areas will not see a flake. Tonight will be another hard freeze with overnight lows ranging from 17-23 degrees.

Saturday will be the pick day of the weekend, with plenty of sunshine and highs near 50. Most of Sunday will be dry, with only a few showers possible after 8 PM. Highs will top out in the mid 40s. Rain showers will linger into Monday, but rainfall will generally be light and non-impactful.

A big-time warming trend is coming Tuesday through Thursday as highs return to the mid to upper 50s. A few areas will even hit 60 by Wednesday afternoon! This mild, wet pattern will likely persist through early February.

Tennessee coach Kim Caldwell to miss Texas game following birth of first child

Tennessee coach Kim Caldwell to miss Texas game following birth of first child

Tennessee women’s basketball coach Kim Caldwell will not coach the team’s Thursday night’s game against Texas, the school announced, after giving birth to her first child, a son named Conor Scott Caldwell.

Assistant coach Jenna Burdette will step into the role of acting head coach in Caldwell’s absence. The 29-year-old has worked with Caldwell since 2018, first at Division II Glenville State, then Marshall and now Tennessee.

The Lady Vols did not announce how long of a leave Caldwell would take. Last week, Caldwell told that her plan was “to return to basketball as quick as possible and then take my maternity leave after the basketball season,” noting that Tennessee was very supportive of that plan and with whatever Caldwell felt most comfortable doing.

After a big game against the Longhorns, the Lady Vols’ schedule doesn’t slow down. Tennessee welcomes No. 2 South Carolina to Knoxville on Sunday for a top-25 matchup, then travels to Missouri on Feb. 2 and hosts No. 6 UConn in a non-conference matchup on Feb. 6.

Caldwell is the second power-conference head coach to give birth during this season. In December, Oklahoma State coach Jacie Hoyt welcomed daughter Harlow in December and returned to the sideline 10 days later, where the Cowgirls got their first Big 12 win of the season with a victory over Iowa State.
