No. 4 Tennessee spoils 4th annual ‘All For Alex’ weekend at Nusz Park
STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTOK) – A three-run home run by Paige Cook was all the No. 17 Mississippi State offense had to offer in the rubber match against the No. 4 Tennessee Volunteers.
The Bulldogs lost the series 2-1, going down 7-3 in Sunday’s game at Nusz Park.
The ballpark recognized Native American Heritage Day on Sunday by having the Choctaw Indian Princess throw out the first pitch.
5th-year pitcher Aspen Wesley started in the circle for the Bulldogs. Wesley, a Philadelphia native and Neshoba Central High School graduate, became the first Mississippi Choctaw to ever pitch in the SEC when she joined the program.
Wesley pitched just 2.2 innings after allowing five earned runs. Tennessee’s Zaida Puni went yard with two on base at the top of the third inning. The three-run homer took Wesley out of the game.
Cook’s three-run home run at the bottom of the fourth wasn’t enough to outscore the Vols, who added two more runs against relief pitcher, Josey Marron.
Tennessee spoiled the weekend festivities for Mississippi State, taking a 7-3 win in game three to clinch the series.
State hosted their 4th annual ‘All for Alex’ weekend in this series. Saturday, both teams— along with the entire SEC, wore teal-colored jerseys/accents in honor of late Mississippi State student-athlete, Alex Wilcox. Wilcox passed away from ovarian cancer in 2018. She played for the Bulldogs that same year despite undergoing chemotherapy.
The Bulldogs will host Memphis on Tuesday before hosting South Alabama on Wednesday. The Bulldogs have an SEC bye week this week before closing out the season with two final SEC series’.
