Local Food, Local Impact: OK Roots Brings Oklahoma Producers Together

A local farm-to-market store is settling into a new location in Owasso while continuing its mission of connecting shoppers with Oklahoma farmers and producers.

OK Roots Farm to Market moved into its new location (12336 E 86th St N, Owasso) just two days ago. Owner Kimberly Brown started the business in 2023, and she says about 95% of the food sold at the store comes from local farmers and producers in Owasso and surrounding Oklahoma communities.

“We know where our food comes from, we know who made it,” Brown said.

The store carries a variety of locally sourced products, including eggs, milk, beef, chicken, sourdough, pickles and fresh produce. It also sells products such as dog treats and personal-care items made by local businesses.

Brown says she started OK Roots after seeing a need for more access to local and healthy food.

She also says OK Roots gives farmers and small producers another way to sell their products outside of farmers markets.

“They can literally bring their product, we sell it for them,” Brown said. “So, it’s another avenue of them having revenue.”

Brown connects with many of her vendors through social media and farmers markets. Before partnering with a producer, she says she asks questions about how their products are made and what ingredients or practices they use.

The new location has also brought more customers through the doors, Brown said. Vendors frequently return to restock products that sell quickly.

For Owasso resident Kaylee Woodham, the new location makes shopping local more convenient. She previously shopped at OK Roots’ former location and regularly buys eggs from the store.

Woodham says she likes knowing the products are local and believes the eggs taste better than those she typically finds at a supermarket.

“It’s a little cheaper it seems to buy from the store, and I just love that they are local, and I probably know that they are getting way better life than supermarket eggs,” Woodham said.

She also says shopping for ingredients such as beef and eggs makes it easier for her to focus on eating whole foods.

Brown says that local connection benefits more than just the people shopping at the store.

“In reality our local foods brings everybody together,” Brown said.

OK Roots Farm to Market is now open at its new Owasso location, where shoppers can find products from Oklahoma farmers, producers and small businesses.

Tennessee basketball will face former Vols guard B.J. Edwards at Oklahoma

Tennessee basketball will see a familiar face during SEC play this season. B.J. Edwards, the former Knoxville Catholic star who played one season with the Vols in 2022, is using an extra year of eligibility to play for Oklahoma, he told On3 on Aug. 13.

The Vols play at Oklahoma for their lone meeting of the regular season on either Feb. 9 or 10.

Edwards exhausted his eligibility after four seasons. But he joined a lawsuit with 16 other basketball players from Tennessee in a lawsuit in state court, hoping to earn an extra season of college eligibility in line with the NCAA’s new 5 in 5 rule. On July 31, Edwards and his fellow plaintiffs were granted a temporary injunction that would allow them to play during the 2026-27 season.

The order handed down by a Tennessee state court required the NCAA to open a new transfer window for this group of athletes from the class of 2022. The window for entering the transfer portal was open from Aug. 3-10. The order did not exempt schools from the roster limit of 15 players, so Edwards could have only joined a team that had anticipated kept a spot in reserve.

Former Vanderbilt center Jalen Washington, who joined Tennessee’s roster this month, was also a plaintiff in that same lawsuit.

While awaiting a ruling in state court, Edwards was not picked in the 2026 NBA Draft but did sign a contract with the Sacramento Kings and played in the NBA Summer League. He averaged 2.4 points across five appearances.

Edwards, who committed to Tennessee as a four-star recruit, transferred to SMU following his freshman year. He was star for the Mustangs as they reached the NCAA Tournament’s First Four last season. As a senior, he averaged 12.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.9 assists and an ACC-leading 2.3 steals per game while shooting 37.2% from 3-point range.

Oklahoma Sooners add veteran guard from SMU in transfer portal

The Oklahoma Sooners made a splash in the transfer portal on Thursday, adding senior SMU guard B.J. Edwards. Edwards joins the Sooners after spending three seasons with the Mustangs.

With SMU last season, Edwards averaged 12.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 2.3 steals per game. He shot 47.4% from the field and 37.2% from three.

The 6-foot-3 point guard is the third guard addition by the Sooners through the transfer portal this offseason. Edwards joins former Texas A&M guard Pop Isaacs and former Utah Valley guard Tyler Hendricks. The Sooners also added forwards Yaak Yaak and Khani Rooths.

Last season for the Mustangs, Edwards scored in double figures 19 times, including a season-high 24 points in a win over Wake Forest. Edwards also had multiple double-digit assist games, with a season-high 13 assists against Arkansas State and 11 in a win over Texas A&M. Edwards recorded a triple-double in the Mustangs’ win over Cal State Fullerton.

This is a big get for Porter Moser and the Sooners, adding a veteran player who can facilitate the offense and provide a scoring punch.
