Atlanta helps rebuild NC art community after Helene

It’s been nearly three months since Hurricane Helene barreled through the Southeast leaving destruction in its path. Now a nonprofit group from one of the hardest hit communities in North Carolina has set up shop here in Atlanta as part of an effort to rebuild its historic arts district and assist the artists who lost everything.

ATLANTA – Nearly three months after Hurricane Helene barreled through the southeast, a North Carolina-based non-profit has opened an art exhibit in Atlanta to try and help struggling artists recover.

Asheville’s Historic River Arts District was reduced to ruins after Helene came through in September and destroyed 80 percent of the artist’s studio space.

“Art is very important to Asheville and kind of always has been…this was definitely a wonderful gift,” RADA Foundation Executive Director Kim Hundertmark told FOX 5.

That gift to Asheville artists came in the form of exposure at Atlanta’s Ponce City Market.

“Ponce City Market donated this space…we don’t really have a lot of gallery space or studio space in the River Arts (District) right now,” she explained.

Hundertmark is one of the dozens of artists whose studio spaces were damaged by the hurricane that claimed hundreds of lives and left widespread devastation.

“The River Arts District started as an inexpensive place for artists to find studio space,” she said. “We all had to move out…I was in the second floor…and had about a foot and a half of water in my studio.”

Hundertmark says even in the cold of this winter season, the response from Metro Atlanta residents has been warm.

“We’ve sold about $20,000 worth of art in the last four weeks,” she told FOX 5.

She says that support means everything to the 40 artists featured.

“It means they pay their rent for the next month or two…it means that they’re able to buy supplies that they lost in the flood,” Hundertmark said.

The River Arts District pop-up exhibit will be open until Sunday, Dec. 29. The exhibit is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

AUSTIN, Texas — AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Jordan Lee scored a career-best 22 points, Madison Booker added 18 and No. 2 Texas beat No. 11 North Carolina 79-64 on Thursday night in the ACC-SEC challenge.

Texas (9-0) has won 31 straight home games, this one largely by outscoring North Carolina (8-2) 47-25 in the middle two quarters. Texas led by 24 late in the game.

Lee helped Texas pull away in the second half by stealing two passes and converting them into fast-break layups. Booker hit 10 of 11 free throws.

Kyla Oldacre had 16 points and seven rebounds for the Longhorns, and Justice Carlton scored 11 points. Rori Harmon had eight assists and three of Texas’ 11 steals.

Elina Aarnisalo led North Carolina with 17 points. Indya Nivar scored 16.

North Carolina outshot Texas 47% to 46%, but the Tar Heels committed 20 turnovers that the Longhorns turned into 24 points.

The Tar Heels came in averaging nine 3-pointers a game, but shot just 2 for 11 against Texas.

Texas has been without rotation players Aaliyah Crump (foot), Bryanna Preston (ankle) and Ashton Judd (knee) for its last four games. Judd has yet to appear in a game after transferring from Missouri.

The Longhorns had difficulty guarding North Carolina at the start of the game. The Tar Heels hit 10 of 13 from the field in the first quarter, outscoring the Longhorns 16-4 in the paint and taking a 21-16 lead.

The Longhorns pushed back in the second quarter with characteristic rugged defense while driving inside, getting to the free throw line and outscoring North Carolina 23-10. Oldacre scored 10.

Texas dominated the third quarter as well, 24-15, with Carlton scoring 10.

North Carolina hosts Boston University on Sunday. Texas hosts Prairie View A&M on Sunday.

Bill Belichick scored a major recruiting victory as college football’s early signing period started Wednesday by convincing four-star defensive tackle recruit Vodney Cleveland to flip his commitment from Texas to North Carolina.

The Tar Heels had reportedly been attempting to flip Cleveland for months, and Belichick and his staff pulled it off on early National Signing Day.

The 6-foot-3-inch, 305-pound Cleveland played high school football at A.H. Parker high school in Birmingham, Ala. According to ESPN, Cleveland is the No. 228 overall prospect in his recruiting class, and the No. 17 player at his position.

North Carolina is the third program Cleveland has committed to in the recruiting process. He had previously committed to Alabama before picking Texas in June. Now with North Carolina, he is considered a big piece to Belichick’s 2026 class.

Cleveland is one of 12 four-star recruits in North Carolina’s 2026 class so far, according to ESPN. The new class should provide some improved talent for a Tar Heel team that finished 4-8 in Belichick’s first season as head coach.

Wednesday was the first National Signing Day for the Class of 2026, marking the first opportunity for high school prospects to lock up scholarships and sign financial aid agreements.
