Hilo woman killed in Kona traffic crash – West Hawaii Today
A 21-year-old Hilo woman died as the result of a three-vehicle traffic collision Sunday night on Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona.
Officers responded to a 9:28 p.m. report of a head-on collision near the north end of Kahaluu Beach Park.
Their preliminary investigation determined that the woman, Hinanui T. Starr-Boyle, was driving a gray 2012 Toyota Tacoma northbound at a high-rate of speed for the area.
While passing another northbound vehicle in a no-passing zone, the Tacoma crossed into the southbound lane and collided head-on with a silver 2010 Nissan Frontier pickup truck driven by a 20-year-old Holualoa man.
Following the initial collision, the Nissan Frontier continued onto the makai shoulder of the roadway, where it struck a parked tan Ford Econoline van.
Starr-Boyle was pronounced dead at 10:17 p.m. at Kona Community Hospital. Her passenger, a 25-year-old Hilo man, and the driver of the Nissan were admitted to KCH. Both were listed in stable condition.
The driver of the Nissan was arrested on suspicion of DUI.
None of the people involved in the collision were wearing seat belts, and speed and impairment are believed to be contributing factors in the crash, police said.
Starr-Boyle’s death is the 18th traffic fatality on Hawaii Island in 2026, compared to 14 at the same time last year.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Kauai Fire Department firefighters rescued a Utah visitor from Nounou Mountain on the Sleeping Giant Trail in Wailua on Thursday.
Firefighters were dispatched shortly after 7:20 p.m. to a report of a woman with an apparent leg injury located approximately one mile up the trail.
Crews with the Kapaa Fire Station and Rescue 3 responded to the incident.
According to a preliminary report, first responders arrived at the trailhead shortly before 7:40 p.m. and proceeded up the trail with first-aid and rescue equipment. Crews reached the hiker, provided care for an apparent lower-leg injury, and used a wheeled litter to carry the patient safely down to the trailhead.
The hiker was able to travel to the hospital by personal vehicle. First responders cleared the scene shortly after 9 p.m.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A recall alert was issued Thursday for an instant soup that was sold in Hawaii because it contains an allergen that was not indicated on the label.
The Hawaii Department of Health’s Food and Drug Branch is alerting the public to a recall issued by Sun Noodle for its Sura Tanmen Hot and Sour Flavor Premium Japanese Noodles and Soup Base.
The products were mistakenly packaged with soba sauce soup base, which contains fish, a known allergen.
The recalled soup was distributed only in Hawaii to Don Quijote, Times Supermarket, H Mart, Marukai Wholesale Mart, Nijiya Market, and other local grocers and distributors.
The DOH is following up to make sure the impacted items are no longer available for sale.
The recalled items include Sura Tanmen, individual packages and packs of 12, with the item numbers 05410 or 05410.1, and lot number 1226183.
There have been no reports of illness from the recalled product, according to the DOH.
Customers can return the recalled soup to the original place of purchase for a full refund.
