Police: Miami man shot after refusing to pay for pot from dealer he met on Grindr

MIAMI – A drug dealer shot a Miami man he first met on Grindr because he failed to pay for 3 grams of marijuana, according to police.

Authorities arrested the accused gunman, Aaron Robert Pavey, 22, of Hollywood, on Thursday.

According to a report by the Miami Police Department, the victim met Pavey through the dating app, mainly used by gay and bisexual men, in late June. Police said he purchased pot from Pavey and smoked it with him “a few times” leading up to the shooting.

The incident happened at around 10:45 p.m. Monday, July 24.

Police said after texting Pavey that he was looking to buy some marijuana, the victim arrived home to the 50 block of Northwest 42nd Street in the Buena Vista neighborhood. Pavey was already parked nearby, they said.

According to the arrest report, the victim went to Pavey’s car for the drug exchange; he then took the pot without paying and began walking towards his house.

As the victim walked away, police said Pavey yelled “I’m going to shoot you!” He then fired multiple times hitting the victim once in the leg and grazing him in his right arm.

Police said at least seven shots hit the victim’s house, four of which went inside.

Authorities later located Pavey in the Highland Lakes subdivision of northeast Miami-Dade’s Ojus area Thursday afternoon and arrested him on one count of attempted murder and two counts of shooting a deadly missile.

It took one season for former NFL quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to become a championship-winning head coach.

Miami Northwestern Senior High School, Bridgewater’s alma mater, hammered William M. Raines High School 41-0 in Florida’s Class 3A state title game.

Miami Northwestern finished Bridgewater’s first year at 12-2 and turned into a buzz saw in the state playoffs. The Bulls won their five games by a combined score of 262-12. All but one of those contests was a shutout.

Miami Northwestern quarterback Leon Strawder threw for 365 yards and four touchdowns against Raines, per Clayton Freeman of the Florida Times-Union.

Strawder credited Bridgewater’s coaching with helping him in a big way on the field.

“With Coach Teddy going for me, he was like, ‘Hey, if you’re reading this side of the field, keep your eyes on that guy,’ or when you move and throw the ball,” he said. “He was showing me the ropes, what he was doing when he was playing here. And he just brushed it down to me.”

Leading up to the state championship, Bridgewater said he did not want to “let history repeat itself twice,” referencing Miami Northwestern’s loss in the 2008 title game.

Bridgewater was a freshman when the Bulls were perfect and laid claim to being the best team in the country. Jacory Harris, who went on to play for the Miami Hurricanes, was the starting quarterback that year before Bridgewater took over as the starter in his sophomore year.

“It means a lot to the kids, the school, the community, Liberty City in general,” the 2015 Pro Bowler said after Saturday’s victory, per Jon Santucci of the Palm Beach Post. “When Northwestern is doing well, Liberty City is proud. We’ve been saying this for years and it’s great to be back on top.”

Bridgewater leads H.S. alma mater to Fla. title

It didn’t take long for Teddy Bridgewater to succeed in his first job since retiring from the NFL.

Bridgewater led his alma mater, Miami Northwestern Senior High School, to the Class 3A Florida High School Athletic Association state title Saturday night, an achievement that came just 10 months after he was hired for the job.

The Bulls beat previously unbeaten Raines 41-0 in Miami for their eighth overall state title.

Bridgewater, 32, was hired in February, tasked with turning around a program that had gone 4-6 the previous season. He did that and then some.

Miami Northwestern went 12-2 on the season, outscoring its opponents 262-12 in five playoff games. It finished the season on a 10-game winning streak.

Bridgewater had 6,712 passing yards and 70 touchdowns as a star quarterback at Miami Northwestern before moving onto Louisville, where he earned Big East Rookie of the Year honors and won Sugar Bowl MVP after guiding the Cardinals past Florida as a junior.

He went on to be a 2014 first-round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings and played for seven NFL teams, most recently the Detroit Lions, before he retired after the 2023 season.

Dolphins waive quarterback Skylar Thompson, activate wide receiver Grant DuBose off injured reserve

Saturday marked the end of the Skylar Thompson era for the Miami Dolphins. The franchise released the third-year quarterback in a wave of roster moves ahead of Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans.

The franchise signed practice defensive tackle Matt Dickerson to the active roster and activated wide receiver Grant DuBose off injured reserve. Tackle Ryan Hayes and long snapper Zach Triner were also elevated to the active roster for Sunday’s game.

Thompson appeared in 10 games during his three years in Miami, completing 81 of 138 pass attempts with one passing touchdown. He completed 21 of 33 pass attempts for only 187 yards in three appearances this season. With depth issues elsewhere, the Dolphins proceed with Tyler Huntley as backup quarterback, but Thompson could land on the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Dickerson’s career began with the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and he signed to the Dolphins practice squad on Oct. 25, 2024. He logged 15 tackles across 12 appearances with the Kansas City Chiefs last season but has yet to see the field this year.

DuBose caught one of three targets this season and suffered a shoulder injury in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills. A 2023 seventh-round pick by the Green Bay Packers, the Dolphins hope DuBose can also help improve one of the NFL’s worst special teams units.

Players can only be elevated from the practice squad three times, and Sunday marks the third time Triner will be called up for game day. Since starting Blake Ferguson has fully practiced back-to-back weeks, Miami may be leveraging the roster spot elsewhere with Triner available.

With starting left tackle Terron Armstead doubtful, elevating Hayes was to be expected. Miami’s depth in the trenches will be tested especially against a defense anchored by Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson Jr.
