“I would say like a solid 75,” Osaka said this week, when she was asked to rate her ball-striking level at the moment. “I think 75 is a good number.”
That’s 75 out of a 100 hundred, I assume. It was enough, barely, to get her through in three sets against 108th-ranked Yuliia Starodubtseva in her first match in Miami. But it’s not where Osaka feels she was to start the season.
“I felt really, really good in Australia,” Osaka said. “Then I got injured, and I couldn’t play for, like, three weeks to a month. That gap, it took me back quite a lot. I think now it’s better again, but I still find myself not really committed to the shots that I want to hit.”
The question for Osaka is whether she can reach a higher number against Samsonova, because 75 doesn’t seem like it’s going to be enough. The Russian is ranked 40 spots ahead of her, No. 21 to No. 61. She beat her the last time they played, 7-5 in the third in Madrid in 2024. And she made a decent run to the quarters last week in Indian Wells, before losing to Aryna Sabalenka.
Osaka has the better serve, and Samsonova can have bad days out of the blue; with her talent and physicality, she should be ranked higher. But on a good day, she’s a player who can match, or come close to matching, Osaka’s pace from the ground. Winner: Samsonova

The start of the Miami Open men’s final between Novak Djokovic and unseeded 19-year-old Jakub Mensuk on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium was delayed 5½ hours from its 3 p.m. start time.
The players didn’t take the court until 8:37 p.m. due to rain and organizers deciding on completing the women’s doubles final.
The South Florida rain began at 12:50 p.m. during the women’s doubles final pitting Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider against Cristina Bucsa and Miyu Kato, with Andreeva and Shnaider leading 3-0 in the first set.

The women’s players returned to the court at 5:30 p.m. after the rain stopped and the courts were readied by court-drying machinery. But rain began minutes later before warmups and the umbrella-toting players left the court again.
The women returned to the court an hour later and resumed play at 6:50 p.m. Andreeva and Schnaider went the distance, prevailing in a third-set match tiebreaker 6-3, 6-7 (5), 10-2.
About three-quarters of the fans were still in the stadium. Players were told that the doubles championship ceremony would be abbreviated.
Seeded fourth, the 37-year-old Djokovic was seeking his seventh Miami Open title – which would tie him for the record with Andre Agassi.
Djokovic is also attempting to win his 100th career pro title, which would rank third after Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103).
Mensuk, of the Czech Republic, is playing his first ATP 1000 final. He was not quite 2 years old when Djokovic won his first Miami Open title in 2007. Djokovic also won Miami in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 – all coming at the old venue in Key Biscayne.
The age gap of 18 years and 102 days will be the largest in the history of ATP 1000-level final.
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – An investigation is ongoing after a shooting occurred on a Miami-Dade County Transit bus.
It happened early Sunday morning outside a shopping plaza on the corner of Miami Gardens Drive and Northwest Seventh Avenue.
Miami Gardens police roped off the entire shopping plaza right next to the area where that bus was parked.
According to police, all of this started around 3 a.m. when officers responded to a disturbance call.
Investigators say the driver of that Miami-Dade Transit bus got into an argument or disagreement of some sort with passengers who were onboard.
At some point, police said the driver pulled out a gun and opened fire, hitting two of the passengers.
Both victims, who are men, were rushed to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital by helicopter in critical condition, but both would later be pronounced dead.
At this point, police say the bus driver is being detained by officers as they conduct their investigation, though it is not clear if he will face any charges.
What led up to the fight is unclear, and officers have not been able to say whether the passengers were armed with any weapons of their own.

Lionel Messi returned to competitive action for Inter Miami on Saturday evening, coming off the bench to score a brilliant solo goal in a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Union. The victory sent the Herons to the top of both the MLS Supporters’ Shield standings and the Eastern Conference.
In a matchup between the league’s top two teams entering Matchday 6, Miami and Philadelphia delivered a thrilling contest, with Javier Mascherano’s side emerging victorious.
The hosts struck first when Finland international Robert Taylor finished off a well-worked move midway through the first half. A pinpoint Jordi Alba cross found U.S. international Benjamin Cremaschi, who set up Taylor for a one-time finish in the box.
Trailing at halftime, the Union brought on U.S. international Indiana Vassilev, but 10 minutes later, Messi entered the fray – and wasted no time making his mark.
Just two minutes after coming on, the Argentine received a pass from Luis Suárez, danced through defenders with dazzling footwork, and slotted home a stunning finish to double Miami’s lead.
Philadelphia fought back, pulling one back in the 80th minute when Daniel Gazdag converted a cross from U.S. youth international Quinn Sullivan – older brother of teenage phenom Cavan. But it wasn’t enough, as Miami held firm to secure the win.
The match was heated, with the hosts picking up seven yellow cards, but the three points were crucial in keeping Miami atop the standings.
Now, the Herons face a quick turnaround as they prepare to take on LAFC in the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday. If Saturday’s performance was any indication, they remain as dangerous as ever.
