Police ID Maryland man shot in incident at Peruvian ambassador’s home


WASHINGTON (AP) — Gordon Casey, a 19-year-old from Germantown, Maryland, was recognized by the Metropolitan Police Division on Saturday as the person who was shot and killed by U.S. Secret Service officers this previous week on the residence of Peru’s ambassador to the USA.

Police mentioned the diplomat and his household had been inside the house within the Forest Hills neighborhood of northwest Washington after they heard a number of home windows being smashed Wednesday morning and known as the Secret Service.

Officers responding to the decision for a housebreaking in progress encountered a person they mentioned was armed with a steel stake within the rear yard.

District of Columbia Police Chief Robert Contee mentioned officers had used a Taser to attempt to detain the person, however “these weapons seem to not have any impact on the individual.”

Police mentioned the officers “gave a number of instructions to the suspect to drop the weapon.” When he didn’t, two officers fired their weapons, placing and killing Casey. He was pronounced lifeless on the scene.

Investigators haven’t revealed any particulars a few potential motive. Earlier within the week, Contee mentioned police had been nonetheless attempting to study why the person was on the ambassador’s dwelling and why he was smashing the home windows.

A number of home windows and doorways across the massive property had been shattered, he mentioned.

MARYLAND — In a statement emailed out Saturday afternoon, Governor Wes Moore, says state workers are getting an extra holiday in 2024, Christmas Eve.

“Our state employees have worked tirelessly all year long ensuring that Maryland is safer, more affordable, more competitive and the state that serves. We hope that all of our incredible public servants across the state can take a much-needed day to be with their loved ones this holiday season.”

The day will be treated like any other state employee holiday. This will make Tuesday, the 14th holiday for state employees.
