BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A recent study found that Louisiana was in the top five states where college students are at risk of being in an accident.

Personal injury lawyers at the Schiller Kessler Group looked at crash fatality data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to determine the most dangerous states and counties. The counties that were looked at were those with driving schools. The number of fatal crashes was adjusted based on local populations to calculate a rate per 100,000 residents.

The national average is 52.2 crashes per 100,000 people, the study said.

According to the study, Louisiana was the third most dangerous state with 83.1 crashes per 100,000 residents. St. Helena Parish was found to be the ninth most dangerous area in the country with 295.7 crashes.

The study said South Carolina was the most dangerous for young drivers with 91.1 crashes.

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Louisiana saw one of its biggest bumps in film production around 2022 where there were close to 20 major productions on the ground per month throughout the state. As of today, that number has been cut by more than half.

“I don’t ever see us having 27 shows on the ground like we did after Covid which, everybody was at a freeze for so long,” said Executive Director for Celtic Studios Cory Parker.

Parker says two major industry strikes at the end of 2023 sent productions overseas leading to less work.

“They did pivot as the writers’ strike happened, they pivoted out of the country, and then with the Teamsters at the table it has slowed them returning back,” Parker added.

Studios are also merging and creating uncertainty within the business. Other factors like the economy and how the 2024 elections will shape out have also led to production companies taking their business abroad. Louisiana still has some of the more enticing film production incentives in the country, but in recent years, about 37 other states have followed our lead and have become more competitive.

A recently passed state law gave the state’s tax incentives an expiration date of 2031, allowing us to keep our edge on the competition. According to Parker, things should begin to turn around in the near future.

“We were the first with the program and then others have replicated it and had success. Ours is one of the strongest programs, it’s had the longest run, people rely on us, they know our crews are built around it and they love coming here,” Parker explained.

Parker says because contracts have started to be resolved between these production companies, he expects the industry to pick up and crews to head back here by the end of January.

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested a St. Amant man accused of felony sex crimes involving a child under the age of 10.

Sidney W. Clifton, 59, of St. Amant, was arrested and booked into jail on charges of indecent behavior with juveniles and sexual battery.

According to APSO, on July 16, deputies responded to the 6400 block of Louisiana Highway 1 near Belle Rose. A complainant told deputies that Clifton reportedly committed sexual battery on a child on July 15 at the home while he was visiting.

Later on the same day, Clifton drove to a secluded area after leaving a retail outlet and reportedly tried to touch the child again. She rebuffed his attempt, according to investigators. The sheriff’s office said he took her back to the home near Belle Rose and told her not to tell anyone.

Clifton was arrested by the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office on Aug. 21. He remains in custody at the Assumption Parish Detention Center pending a bond hearing.
