UGA vs VCU Regional Preview: What You Need to Know

The VCU Rams’ play fashion would make your Granddaddy smile.

They throw strikes, put the ball in play, and grind their approach to successful baseball video games. The Rams acquired scorching sizzling on the proper time, they’re 28-4 of their final 32 video games, and are presently on a 15 successful streak. They used that late season surge to blow via the Atlantic 10 event, successful their first convention title since 2015. They are going to look to hold that momentum with them to Chapel Hill once they tackle the Georgia Bulldogs tonight at 7 pm (ESPN+). There shall be many matchups all through the sport that can swing the ultimate rating someway, let’s try a few of these.

Cannon vs the Rams

It’s now confirmed that UGA ace Jonathon Cannon will get the ball tonight. Georgia can relaxation straightforward understanding that this Ram’s lineup has not seen something like Cannon but this yr. His mixture of velocity and pitch repertoire isn’t one thing you’ll be able to essentially observe for, and that’s not to say VCU has not confronted some actually good pitching, it’s only a praise to the third workforce All America pitcher Cannon.

You’ll be able to’t begin speaking concerning the Rams’ lineup with out first mentioning power-hitting first baseman Tyler Locklear. Locklear will come into the weekend slashing .403/.540/.801 with 19 homers, 23 doubles and, in all probability most impressively, 22 strikeouts. He has been among the best hitters within the nation since day 1 and has been constantly enhancing his draft inventory to 1st spherical standing. He’s completely the man that Coach Scott Stricklin and the teaching workers circled a number of occasions within the scouting report assembly as being the man they WILL NOT let beat them. If there’s a state of affairs the place Locklear comes up with an opportunity to drive in some runs, don’t count on the UGA workers to be very aggressive in pitching to him.

Scroll to Proceed

Aside from Locklear, VCU’s lineup doesn’t possess a ton of energy. What they do very well is put the ball in play as they’ve solely struck out 438 occasions as a workforce (for reference, Georgia has struck out 527 occasions). Hitters like Will Carlone (.315), Connor Hujsak (.288), and Logan Amiss (.275) don’t have loopy energy numbers however have hit a mixed 46 doubles and can look to complement and defend Locklear in opposition to Cannon. Cannon might want to win the matchups in opposition to these guys so as to reduce the injury that Locklear can do.

Cannon might want to give the Dawgs some size in tonight’s recreation to offer them one of the best probability at advancing. On paper, Cannon vs the VCU Rams’ lineup is the right matchup to do exactly that. Cannon throws a ton of strikes (10 walks in 74 innings) and the Rams hardly ever strike out, this combo results in loads of balls being put in play. If Cannon can preserve the Rams aggressive and get some early outs, he may have an opportunity to go deep within the recreation. One factor to look at although, Cannon admitted to me in an interview not way back that one among his weaknesses is throwing too many strikes. As a pitcher, after we get forward within the depend, we don’t wish to give the hitter a superb pitch to hit. When Cannon will get hitters to 2 strikes tonight, he must put them away.

How the Dawgs rating runs

Phrase on the road is the UGA lineup will see lefty starter Tyler Davis. Davis (3.25) is a big-time competitor with a fastball that shall be 87-90 as much as 92, a changeup round 80, and a slider sitting at 80-82. He, like the complete VCU workers, doesn’t stroll anybody. He has walked 18 guys in 55 innings, whereas the complete workforce has walked 170 in 515 innings. With the restricted variety of free passes given, they’ll make the Dawgs swing it to beat them. UGA is presently slashing .256/.361/.423 in opposition to lefties, in order that they haven’t actually lit it up in opposition to the southpaws this season.

After Davis, the Rams’ three most relied-on arms out of the bullpen are Noah Wilson (2.41), Jack Masloff (2.86), and Jaden Griffin (4.58). They’ve a plethora of different guys they don’t seem to be scared to make use of in numerous conditions however the frequent theme you will notice is the strike-throwing. The balls are going to be within the zone and UGA has to make use of that to their benefit. Understanding the VCU arms take satisfaction in not strolling many batters, the UGA hitters have to be particularly aggressive in hitters counts like 2-0 or 2-1. When hitters know the ball shall be within the zone, they have a tendency to get extra comfy. Search for the Dawgs to return out swinging early and seeking to do injury from the primary pitch.

Verdict

You’ll discover from the primary pitch tonight that aside from Locklear, Georgia would be the far more proficient workforce. What’s so nice about post-season baseball although is expertise can solely take you up to now. VCU is driving a lot momentum coming into this matchup they usually know the best way to win. They play a mode of baseball that can give coaches complications as a result of they won’t beat themselves. They will pressure the Dawgs to play a clear recreation and can put strain on them in all aspects of the sport. Georgia may have their arms full tonight, however will are available with loads of confidence with their ace on the mound. Tune in tonight at 7 on ESPN+.

Football, protests, and the emergence of New Georgia

As Georgia rallied against government overreach earlier this year, and then cheered its footballers at Euro 2024, a new country began to emerge—determined, united, and fiercely European in spirit.

In recent months, two major news stories about Georgia have made international headlines—the protests against the Kremlin-style foreign agents law and the unlikely success of the Georgia national football team at UEFA Euro 2024.

The protests and football both impacted and reflected the profound mental shift taking place in Georgia, and for that reason, the two are deeply intertwined.

Moments after Georgia qualified for Euro 2024 with the last penalty of a shootout against Greece on March 26, the commentator remarked: “The dream has been achieved, the mission has been accomplished—Georgia in Europe, Georgia’s team at the European championship.”

On June 30, at the beginning of the Georgia-Spain round of 16 match, the commentator stated: “This is the most important match since we are us and not a part of an empire.” Issues of European identity and struggle for liberation can be easily noticed in these remarks. And that is what the protests have been about as well.

The foreign agents law, which the government first attempted to pass in 2023 but withdrew following mass protests, was resurrected in April only a week after Georgia’s footballers had qualified for the Euros, and while the nation was still celebrating the breakthrough wildly.

For many, the qualification was a sudden resurgence of a sense of national pride and victory against the backdrop of a government that, in the opinion of many, has subtly but consciously sowed pessimism and defeatism among Georgians throughout its 12 years in power.

People were openly furious that their sense of long-desired national unity and celebration was cut short by the government’s audacious re-introduction of the foreign agents law. Adding special intensity to the emotions is the fact that Georgian football had previously been treated by broad masses as something irredeemably hopeless, and while post-Euros most people seem to know all players by their names, only real and consistent fans were familiar with the team before the March qualification.

The foreign agents law has proven to be the most galvanising factor and the most effective rallying call for civic resistance in the entire 12-year history of Georgian Dream government precisely because it is the most tangible proof of the government’s conscious distancing from the European Union and its alignment with Russia in both geopolitics and domestic political essence.

‘Forgotten’ Europeans

Democracy, civic liberties, and the European idea go hand-in-hand in Georgia just like the revolutions of 1989. Support for integration consistently polls at around 85 per cent in Georgia, and the European idea itself is deeply ingrained in Georgia’s collective identity.

For centuries, Georgians (or at the very least, the Georgian political, intellectual, and religious elites) saw themselves as forgotten Europeans, cut off from their civilisational brothers by the tragedy of geography and conquests.

Late Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania’s words as Georgia was admitted to the Council of Europe, “I am Georgian and therefore I am European”, still remain the most quoted formulation of Georgia’s collective aspirations since 1999.

The protests against the foreign agents law in April and May were undeniably grassroots, self-organised, youth-centred, but encompassing all social layers. They endured for a month and a half without losing their momentum—all without any visible leaders. This persistence, and sprit of collective self-help proved particularly surprising for Georgians themselves.

The street protests only withered as the focus shifted towards the October 26 parliamentary elections in a desperate hope that maybe Georgia’s liberation from Russia’s grasp might yet have a velvet outcome through a mix of internal and external pressure on the ruling party.

Determination, endurance, commitment, and passion

In March, as the Georgia team qualified for the Euros, many football experts underlined that “the boys” had overcome the “traditional characteristics” of Georgians such as putting in half efforts and counting on luck, and had embraced true discipline and determined hard work.

The determination, the will to fight until the very end, the passion, and the commitment of the Georgia team have been named as the key reasons why they won the hearts of millions during Euro 2024. Just like the team, the people of Georgia have demonstrated precisely those qualities—determination, endurance, commitment, and passion—something that the Kremlin playbook did not expect based on its understanding of Georgians as headless without leaders.

There are more visible interconnections between football and the national resistance too. A popular pop song by Merab Sepashvili with a chorus, The fairy tale has a happy end, was first adopted as a de facto football song by fans and later became part of the soundtrack of the fight against the Russian-style autocratic regime.

The official football anthem I am Georgia, which aims to stress individual responsibility in collective success deserves particular emphasis. The football anthem, although modern and with a great beat, incorporates half a minute of the famous medieval church chant Thou art a Vineyard, written by King Demetrius I, the son of the greatest Georgian ruler David IV the Builder.

History, modernity, and football

As such, history, modernity, and football have all become intertwined with the protests by the adoption of these two songs as the main anthems of the Georgians protesting for their European future and civic liberties.

On July 2, the national football team received a heroes’ welcome home from the public. Their sudden visible success seems to have cracked the defeatist mentality and pessimism about the future sowed by Georgian Dream for more than a decade.

This is seen as the visualisation of a new, victorious Georgia. The way the prime minister Irakli Kobakhidze was booed intensely at the celebration while the president, Salome Zourabichvili—the only public figure representing Georgia’s European aspirations on an institutional level—was cheered with wild applause spoke volumes and has even been dubbed as an early exit poll by some Facebook users.

For many, all this feels like the emergence of a new Georgia. I see people who are rapidly transforming into a fundamentally free, hard-working, European society. Football and civil society have been mutually reinforcing and influential in Georgia’s mental shift and national liberation. The only thing needed now is to unseat the made-in-Russia oligarch who has captured the state.

Carson Beck in Elite QB Company

Carson Beck in Elite QB Company

Georgia football quarterback Carson Beck is in elite company heading into the 2024 college football season.

One of the biggest advantages Georgia has heading into the 2024 college football season outside of having Kirby Smart as the program’s head coach is quarterback Carson Beck. He is considered to be one of, if not, the best players at his position and a top candidate to be the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft.

Beck pieced together an impressive 2023 campaign, which was his first season as Georgia’s starter. He nearly threw for 4,000 yards, completed over 70 percent of his balls and had a 24/6 touchdown touchdown-to-interception ratio. He was as consistent as it gets at quarterback and continued to progress throughout the season. In fact, he was so impressive during the 2023 season, that he placed himself amongst some elite quarterback company due to his performances against conference opponents.

This is a very promising stat for Georgia fans for multiple reasons. First of all, Georgia will have to go through a grinder of a conference schedule this season. Three road games against Texas, Alabama and Ole Miss with home games against Tennessee and Auburn just to name a few. The Bulldogs will need Beck to play up to the standard that is expected of him in order for them to achieve their aspirations, and the stat book says that shouldn’t be a problem for him.

Elite quarterback play has become an essential aspect of national titles and even playoff teams over the years. Georgia has that with Beck under center and if he improves upon what he did just a season ago, then the Bulldogs should be in a pristine position to push for a third national title over the last four seasons.
