Newton (Georgia) assistant coach strikes Milton player
During a preseason Georgia high school football scrimmage between the 2023 Class 7A champion Milton Eagles and Newton Rams on Friday night, an unidentified Newton football coach was caught on video striking Milton linebacker Hayden Tumminia as he walked away from the opposition’s sideline.
A clip of the incident was posted on X by Milton head coach Ben Reaves Jr. The video had produced nearly 200,000 views before being taken down. The Eagles are the top team in the state in SBLive Georgia’s Preseason Top 25 rankings.
Newton head coach Joshua Skelton posted an apology on behalf of the Rams’ football program on Saturday afternoon and stated the assistant coach in question was no longer with the program. Skelton’s statement that was posted on X is below.
“On behalf of Newton Football I want to apologize for the Incident that happened between our coach and a Milton player. This behavior is not a reflection of Newton football, our community, or culture. We want to personally apologize to Coach Ben Reeves, Milton High School Football, our Newton community, and the High School Football coaching community. The coach involved is no longer part of our program and we look forward to a great year of Newton Football. We wish the Milton Eagles football team a great season.”

Prior to the punch, both teams appeared to be in between plays and as soon as Tumminia walked by the Rams’ assistant, the coach struck the back of Tumminia’s head with one official’s back turned and another apparently watching the action unfold entirely.
Tumminia immediately turned to face the official who had his back turned to ask about the coach striking his head after the play was over.

After taking down the viral post, Reaves Jr. posted about him and Skelton speaking, and indicated the situation had been handled.
“Earlier (Coach Joshua Skelton) and I were able to talk, get on the same page, and are bothhappy with the actions that will be taken by both programs. Moving forward, we wish Newton Football nothing but the best, the issue has been mutually handled, the tweet is down, now moving on towards Game 1.”

Investigation underway after missing 72-year-old Jacksonville Navy veteran found dead in Georgia
LIBERTY COUNTY, Ga. – A 72-year-old Jacksonville woman who had been missing for more than a week was found dead in Georgia, according to an update from the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office.
Margaret Hanley, a Navy veteran, was last seen Monday, Feb. 8, according to her family.
The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office later announced that Hanley’s vehicle, which her son said was a 2001 Toyota RAV4, was found off a road in Hinesville, Georgia, stuck in the mud. Hinesville is about an hour southwest of Savannah in Liberty County
Investigators said a body found by the vehicle was confirmed to be Hanley, and her family has been notified.
Hanley’s son, Jomo Thompson, previously said his mother had been dealing with short-term memory loss. He suspected she might have been the victim of a scam after noticing unusual bank account activity, including checks written out to a person for large amounts.
“My mom is very frugal, so that’s cause for alarm,” Thompson said.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said Hanley’s last known location was identified in Georgia.
Thompson said that was concerning because his mother usually didn’t travel farther than the local Walmart. He added he isn’t familiar with anyone she might know in Georgia.
The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office said this remains an active and ongoing investigation, and Hanley’s vehicle has been secured and will be impounded.
JSO said a Silver Alert was not issued for Hanley because she was last identified in Georgia.
JSO said it reached out for assistance in Georgia and shared information through the National Crime Information Center. They also issued a “Be on the Lookout” alert in Liberty County, where Hanley was last seen.

Georgia says Elon Musk’s America PAC violated election law
For all his bluster about voter fraud, Elon Musk has been one of the most flagrant flaunters of US election law. Now his America PAC has been slapped with a reprimand by the Georgia State Election Board for sending out pre-filled absentee ballot applications. State law prohibits anyone, other than an authorized relative, from sending an absentee ballot application prefilled with the elector’s information.
Residents of Chattooga, Cherokee, Coweta, Floyd, and Whitfield counties reported receiving absentee ballot applications from America PAC, partially pre-filled. According to the State Election Board, the applications also failed to note that they were not actual ballots and were not provided by the government, as is required by law.
At the State Election Board meeting on February 18th, the panel quickly handed down the reprimand. America PAC did not appear to send a representative or submit a statement in defense of its actions.
This is just the latest example of Musk testing the limits of election law after he repeatedly suggested paying people to sign a petition and register to vote in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and other swing states. It’s also another incident in which those who claim to be most concerned about election integrity have been caught potentially violating the law.

Georgia missed out on Heisman winner over cancelled phone call
Indiana Hoosiers quarterback Fernando Mendoza had a legendary stint with the Hoosiers, winning the Heisman trophy and leading the Hoosiers to their first national championship victory in franchise history. However, Mendoza was extremely close to being a Georgia Bulldog, according to a recent interview he had with The Ticket.
“I think there was one time even where I was about to call Kirby to commit to Georgia and the call didn’t go through,” said Mendoza. “And I thought, ‘Alright, let me sleep on it tonight.’ I really believed God helped me with that.”
Georgia was in transition at quarterback during the 2025 offseason. Incumbent starter Carson Beck transferred to the Miami Hurricanes on Jan. 10, 2025, and the team was deciding whether to start Gunner Stockton or sign a transfer out of the portal. They were pursuing a couple of quarterbacks, especially Fernando Mendoza, who showed some legit upside coming out of the California Golden Bears.
Mendoza ended up committing to Indiana, and it revitalized his career. He won the Heisman, led the Hoosiers to the national championship, and is projected to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft. He actually beat former Georgia starter Carson Beck in the national championship too, showing just how close Georgia was to acquiring a championship-level quarterback.
Still, Bulldogs fans aren’t stressing out about their quarterback play. Gunner Stockton had a really good season last year, finishing seventh in Heisman voting and leading the Bulldogs to an 11-2 record and SEC title.
The questions surrounding Georgia are in Stockton’s supporting cast entering 2026. They lost wide receivers Zachariah Branch, Colbie Young, and Dillon Bell, but they’re bringing back London Humphreys and landed transfer Isiah Canion from Georgia Tech. The two-headed monster of Nate Frazier and Chauncey Bowens remains intact in the backfield, and sophomore Bo Walker and Kentucky transfer Dante Dowdell will take carries too.
The tight end room is still mostly intact, minus 2026 NFL draft declaree Oscar Delp, and the offensive line room has a few returners and emerging underclassmen, although they lost left tackle Monroe Freeling III and guard Micah Morris.
Gunner Stockton’s 2025 Stats
- 2,894 passing yards
- 35 total touchdowns
- Five interceptions
- 84.9 QBR (6th in nation)
Fernando Mendoza’s 2025 Stats
- 3,535 passing yards
- 48 total touchdowns
- Six interceptions
- 90.3 QBR (1st in nation
