Low voter turnout during Georgia’s presidential primary


SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – Poll workers at a precinct in Savannah say just a few people are turning out for the presidential preference primary on Tuesday.

Across the state of Georgia, there was about a 65 percent decrease in early voter turnout compared to the presidential primary election in 2020.

Only about 8,000 of the more than 230,000 registered voters in Chatham County voted early or cast an absentee ballot. That’s only about 3 percent.

When WTOC spoke with election officials leading up to primary day in Georgia, they were hopeful for a higher turnout at the polls on Tuesday. That was before republican candidate Nikki Hayley dropped out.

A poll manager at the Jewish Educational Alliance said this might be the lowest number of voters she’s ever seen.

“Some mornings we’ll have a line before we open the door and at lunch time, we’ll have a rush and then we have a break, and then after that, then we have a rush,” poll manager Jeanette Cooper said. “But this is the slowest because when I came in the morning time to set up, I said, ‘where’s my people.’ I didn’t see none today.”

An assistant political science professor at Georgia Southern University said there’s a few reasons behind that drop.

First, she says in 2020, we didn’t know who the democratic candidate would be driving more people to the polls.

She also says in 2020, a lot of people were voting through an absentee ballot, which is something we saw less of this year.

Because voters already know who the likely front runners are in this race, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, she says that’s leading to lower turnout.

However, she said it’s still important to cast your vote, especially because Georgia is viewed as a swing state.

“What the primaries do, is it sort of gives the campaigns some indication of how they’ll do in the state, or where they will do well. And so, one of the reasons why it’s important to go out and vote and so that then the candidates will have some idea of how they’re going to do and what they need to do to fix any weaknesses in their campaign moving forward,” Kimberly Martin said.

Martin says each candidate will be viewing the state of Georgia as a huge prize this presidential election, and based on results Tuesday night, it will give them a clearer view of who might be able to win the Peach State.

Former Georgia Bulldogs recruiting target Kevin Wynn plans to enter the transfer portal after spending his first year of college football with the Florida State Seminoles. Wynn redshirted during his freshman season after appearing in four games and has four years of eligibility left. He posted one tackle and one pass deflections.

The 6-foot-2, 340-pound defensive tackle was a prized recruit in the class of 2025. Wynn was ranked as the No. 60 recruit in the country, the No. 9 defensive lineman and the No. 11 player in Georgia.

It is unclear if Georgia will have much interest in Wynn as a transfer, but coach Kirby Smart and Georgia have targeted several former Peach State products in the portal. Wynn played high school football for Greene County High School in Greensboro, Georgia.

The big defensive tackle commitment to FSU over Texas, South Carolina and Georgia back when he was in high school. His transfer is the latest of FSU’s offseason exodus. The Seminoles have had 38 players enter the transfer portal.

Florida State losing a particularly significant amount of talent along their defensive front. The Seminoles have lost 11 defensive linemen and edge rushers to the transfer portal.

Spencer Mermans plans to transfer to Tech, according to On3. The 6-foot-6, 250-pound Mermans spent the last three seasons at Yale.
