My take: Frontier Airlines – Thanks for the (brief) memories – Delaware Business Now

A call by Frontier Airways to finish service this week e from Wilmington-New Fort for the second time in seven years didn’t come as an enormous shock. One signal was the small variety of vehicles and vehicles within the airport’s parking zone and for probably the most half solely two nonstop per week.

The sunshine flight schedule didn’t lend itself to aggressive promotions and it turned straightforward to overlook Frontier had come to city.

In returning to Delaware and taking warmth for the sooner abrupt departure, Frontier vowed to present the service time to construct site visitors. Given the state of the trade, the airline made at the least a modest effort.

It was a far cry from eight years in the past when Frontier (briefly) had service to a lot of cities from Wilmington-New Fort. Throughout its first temporary keep, we took a flight to Phoenix through Denver. The service was nice however got here earlier than Frontier began charging for every part however utilizing the toilet. (That is perhaps subsequent).

On the time, Frontier’s technique gave the impression to be flawed, made worse by the boundaries of an historical terminal at New Fort that seems to be caught within the ’50s and ’60s. The airport operator, the Delaware River, and Bay Authority did some work to modernize the inside.

On paper, the newest technique gave the impression to be sound. In any case, Orlando is the highest flight vacation spot within the Delaware Valley. If Frontier grabbed a modest chunk of that site visitors from Wilmington-New Fort, the service would cut back head-to-head competitors out of Philly.

With one vacation spot, any crowding on the New Fort terminal could be minimal.

Then got here Covid-19, which delayed Delaware’s service.

By the point the route was launched in 2021, airways have been going through a number of challenges, regardless of a flood of federal funds that saved carriers out of chapter court docket.

As passengers returned, workers shortages that have been an issue earlier than Covid received even worse.

Frontier additionally discovered success at Philadelphia Worldwide Airport (PHL) and selected to not again away from a four-way battle for Orlando passengers in Philly with American, Spirit, and Southwest. On some days, the variety of Frontier’s non-stops quantity matches the determine for American, the 800-pound gorilla in Philly.

Cutbacks in American’s schedule and Frontier’s fuel-efficient jets additionally opened up choices to different cities, with the service now serving greater than 30 locations from PHL.

In commenting on Frontier’s departure, Wilmington-New Fort Airport operator, the River, and Bay Authority pointed to a different issue, the proposed merger between Spirit Airways and Frontier.

At current, the 2 low-fare airways mixed have as many as 10 each day flights to Orlando from PHL, a quantity that may lower with a merger.

Frontier additionally has two nonstops to Orlando from Trenton, an airport on the outer fringe of PHL’s service territory.

The DRBA expressed hope that when the merger is resolved a technique or one other, Wilmington-New Fort would possibly once more enter the image.

That might occur, however for now, Frontier has massive plans within the Delaware Valley that don’t embrace Delaware.. – Doug Rainey, chief content material officer.

Autumn’s newest tradition: The Delaware Fall Festival at Battery Park

Sunday’s autumn weather was perfect for the inaugural Delaware Fall Festival.

The event took place at Battery Park in the historic Old New Castle area of New Castle, providing the ideal setting for a community gathering and a worthy cause.

The free event was organized to raise funds and awareness for the New Castle Outdoor Recreation Coalition’s planned expansion of the park’s playground. Phase 2 of the Battery Park Playground Project will feature a replica of the Kalmar Nyckel, the Swedish flagship that brought settlers who established the first permanent European settlement in the Delaware Valley in 1638.

The festival featured live entertainment, children’s activities, and various food vendors.

Renee Duval, a three-year resident of New Castle, attended the festival with her husband and two children. As regular visitors to Battery Park who often stroll the path near Deemers Beach, they were excited to explore the event after hearing about the food trucks, music, and vendors.

Among the vendors was Theresa Batts, owner of Batts Concessions from Hartford County, Maryland, who learned about the festival through social media. She said the timing was perfect. She and her husband prefer to sell on weekends, but it is very hard to find events on a Sunday. And this weekend, they were celebrating their business’s first anniversary. Batts Concessions offered an array of treats, including kettle corn, homemade peanut brittle, various nuts, and cotton candy. When asked how sales were going, Batts replied, “Fantastic. No complaints. We would definitely do it again next year.”

Delaware Fall Festival organizers hope to make this an annual tradition for the historic waterfront community.
