100 Years Ago, 1924: The fall term of the Sleeper’s Colleges opens Tuesday, Sept. 2, and, from enrollments already made the season promises to be a flourishing one. The reputation of the local institution is not confined to this city alone, as there are enrollments from Delaware, Maryland, Viriginia and even as far south as North Carolina. At least 90 percent of the graduating class of 1923 have been located in satisfactory positions.

75 Years Ago, 1949: Struck by lightning during the violent electrical storm which swept this area early today, a grocery store was wrecked by flames at McCall Heights, Brookhaven. A Brookhaven fireman was felled by smoke in the two hour and 25-minute battle to quell the blaze in a one-story frame building at Shepard and Dutton Mill roads. The victim, Francis Piestrak, 24, was taken to Crozer Hospital in the Parkside ambulance. He was treated for smoke inhalation and released. The store was operated by Thomas S. Winnemore, former proprietor of a service station at Ninth and Sproul streets.

50 Years Ago, 1974: Harrison F. Dunning, retired chairman and chief executive officer of the Scott Paper Co., Tinicum, died today at his home on Shady Hill Road, Moylan, Upper Providence. Dunning was 66 and had been ill for several months. Dunning retired from Scott Paper in 1971. In addition to his duties at Scott, he served as a commission of the Delaware River Port Authority, as a director of the Greater Philadelphia Movement, and as a member of A Better Chester. He was also a member of the American Management Association, a director of the Grocery Manufacturers’ Association and its chairman in 1968 and 1968 and a trustee of the Committee for Economic Development.

25 Years Ago, 1999: Change the familiar phrase to “Don’t smoke them, and don’t even have them.” For years, the smoking ban was only for students. Now, the Springfield School District has extended the prohibition of smoking and carrying smoking products to all staff members and even those just visiting schools for athletic and other events. Infractions of the policy carry penalties and fines which, Superintendent Joseph O’Brien said, the district is prepared to levy against teachers as well as students.

10 Years Ago, 2014: The Concord supervisors meeting scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Sept. 2 at Garnet Valley Middle School will be held 7 p.m. in the township building, 43 Thornton Road. The time and venue had been changed as the board anticipated addressing Vineyard Commons, but the item will not be on the agenda.

Newly released footage shows the moment a Ford Bronco drove onto a golf course and ran into a group of men – leaving one of them injured. 

The short video shows the speeding vehicle driving onto the grass, skirting around one golf cart and narrowly missing another at the Deerfield Golf Club in Newark, Delaware, at around 2:20 pm on August 29. 

As a result, one of the golfers fell down from the cart leading to minor injuries. He refused treatment at the scene. 

Delaware Natural Resources Police have since identified a suspect in connection with the hit-and-run incident. 

The suspect was transported to Delaware State Police Troop 2 where officials claim he made statements that required ‘his transport to a hospital for evaluation’.

The accused has been charged with Driving a Vehicle Under the Influence of Drug, Reckless Endanger First Degree Creates a Substantial Risk of Death to Another, Leaving the Scene of a Collision Resulting in Injury, Malicious Mischief by a Motor Vehicle, Failure to Have Insurance Identification in Possession, Operate Motor Vehicle on Division Roads/Areas Not Designated for Such Purpose and Operate Motor Vehicle on Division Lands with Willful Disregard for Safety of Persons/Property. 

Officials confirmed that the suspect will be arraigned after being released from the hospital. 

Since the video began to make rounds on social media, one user on Reddit has claimed that he was one of the golfers in the group that became a target for the driver.

The alleged victim said that the suspect was doing donuts in the driving range when things went wrong.

‘So I am in this video. I am the guy that runs out of the way right before the driver plows into the golf cart my buddy was in,’ the victim said.

‘We had just finished up the 16th hole and somebody was doing doughnuts all over the driving range. 

‘I pulled out my phone to try and get a picture of his license plate to turn into the clubhouse. 

‘The driver saw I was recording him and turned to try and run me over. At this point all we know was the driver has been apprehended by the police and we have given our statements. 

‘We don’t know motive or anything else. It went from “I’m taking pictures of some idiot” to “oh he’s trying to murder me” in about 0.5 seconds. AMA.’

The golf club is located in White Clay Creek State Park, which is why DNREC police responded. 

Police in Delaware have identified a pedestrian fatally struck by a motorcycle Tuesday as 18-year-old University of Delaware freshman Noelia Gomez of Clark.

Gomez was studying accounting and business management at UD, according to her LinkedIn profile. She graduated from Union Catholic High School.

UD’s president and vice president issued a statement Wednesday afternoon calling for the school to support one another.

“Incidents such as this are unimaginably tragic,” President Dennis Assanis and Vice President José-Luis Riera’s said in a statement. “We cannot express enough how sorry we are for the family, friends, and greater community as we are all so deeply shaken by the sudden loss of one of our own. Our hearts are very heavy today.”

Police said the motorcyclist was fleeing a UD police traffic stop just before midnight on Tuesday. The motorcyclist, whom police have not yet identified, “disregarded the police officer’s emergency lights and fled at a high rate of speed.”

As the motorcyclist sped away, they hit Gomez, who was crossing on West Main Street, just west of North College Avenue, in Newark. The driver was ejected, while the motorcycle continued on and hit four more pedestrians, causing non-life-threatening injuries.

The motorcyclist was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. As of Thursday afternoon, no charges have been filed.

Clark Mayor Sal Bonaccorso said the news of Gomez’s death is “devastating.”

“You send your child to college hoping for a great future for them, and then this happens,” said Bonaccorso. “It’s just so sad. How do you even explain it. You wake up in the morning and you don’t know what you’re going to get in the day, you really don’t.”

He said word that Gomez was the victim of the fatal crash was just beginning to spread around the town Thursday afternoon. He was unsure if any type of remembrance was being planned.

Bonaccorso said Gomez was the second Clark resident killed in an auto accident while attending the University of Delaware. In October 2011 Nicole Marzano, 19, soccer team captain and salutatorian of her high school graduating class, was a freshman at the Delaware state school when she was a passenger killed in a car accident in Pennsylvania.

For the past two years Gomez had worked as a part-time sales associate at Anthem style and gift boutique in Cranford. Store owner Corinne Ardente said Gomez left in July to travel before going off to college.

“She was a great worker,” said Ardente, who had heard about the motorcycle crash. “She was very dependable, she always had a great personality and a great disposition.”

Ardente had discussed the possibility of Gomez returning to work at the store during school breaks.
