Delaware poised to enact assault weapons ban, other gun control measures

‘To ensure the subsequent Uvalde’ doesn’t occur in Delaware

The controversy performed out on the Home ground Wednesday, when Majority Chief Valerie Longhurst introduced up the assault-style weapons ban for a vote.

Whereas the invoice would outlaw future gross sales to residents, it could permit those that at present have such rifles and pistols to maintain them so long as they will show they purchased them earlier than a ban takes impact, if it certainly does cross.

“The intention of this laws is straightforward and clear: to ensure that the subsequent Uvalde, the subsequent Buffalo, the subsequent Sandy Hook doesn’t happen within the state of Delaware,’’ Longhurst, a Democrat who represents the Bear space, informed fellow lawmakers.

Republican Ruth Briggs King of the Milford space in Sussex County countered that weapons aren’t the true drawback.

“I feel we’re typically trying on the object as being the issue as an alternative of trying on the particular person,’’ Briggs King stated. “Many of those we all know are younger people, younger people which have had a historical past of psychological well being or different issues occurring right here, as a result of clearly none of us might suppose that an individual of their proper thoughts would do what has occurred just lately.

“If we’re objects that create violence, why not take a look at among the motion pictures and tv packages which are on the market which encourage and even glorify capturing violence and different issues? Why not take a look at movies and a few of these different video games the place you truly earn factors and get to attain and transfer forward, get further weapons just by making kills on the sport?’’

Longhurst responded that she respects her colleagues however that “clearly we aren’t on the identical web page with this … we’re simply going to have a distinction of opinion, sadly.”

Sussex County GOP lawmaker Bryan Shupe known as the invoice “a reactionary coverage and I’ve seen this occur again and again. I don’t suppose that is significantly going to deal with both the violence in our colleges or the violence in our communities” comparable to Wilmington and Dover.

Longhurst stated she helps offering extra money to reinforce security in colleges, which have lengthy had the choice of getting an armed police officer on their campus. But she emphasised the invoice is “proactive” versus reactionary.

“Being proactive is that you simply ensure that it doesn’t occur. We don’t need these college shootings. We don’t need mass shootings. So why wouldn’t we wish to do that?”

The next vote was 22-19 in favor, largely alongside celebration traces in a chamber the place Democrats maintain a 26-15 benefit. No Republicans voted sure, and 4 Democrats voted no.

Autumn’s newest tradition: The Delaware Fall Festival at Battery Park

Sunday’s autumn weather was perfect for the inaugural Delaware Fall Festival.

The event took place at Battery Park in the historic Old New Castle area of New Castle, providing the ideal setting for a community gathering and a worthy cause.

The free event was organized to raise funds and awareness for the New Castle Outdoor Recreation Coalition’s planned expansion of the park’s playground. Phase 2 of the Battery Park Playground Project will feature a replica of the Kalmar Nyckel, the Swedish flagship that brought settlers who established the first permanent European settlement in the Delaware Valley in 1638.

The festival featured live entertainment, children’s activities, and various food vendors.

Renee Duval, a three-year resident of New Castle, attended the festival with her husband and two children. As regular visitors to Battery Park who often stroll the path near Deemers Beach, they were excited to explore the event after hearing about the food trucks, music, and vendors.

Among the vendors was Theresa Batts, owner of Batts Concessions from Hartford County, Maryland, who learned about the festival through social media. She said the timing was perfect. She and her husband prefer to sell on weekends, but it is very hard to find events on a Sunday. And this weekend, they were celebrating their business’s first anniversary. Batts Concessions offered an array of treats, including kettle corn, homemade peanut brittle, various nuts, and cotton candy. When asked how sales were going, Batts replied, “Fantastic. No complaints. We would definitely do it again next year.”

Delaware Fall Festival organizers hope to make this an annual tradition for the historic waterfront community.
