Attack on police station in Colombia leaves 2 officers dead, bomb blast injures 6 others
Violence intensified in southwestern Colombia on Monday when a bomb blast injured six people in the city of Jamundi and an attack by insurgents on a police station in the rural town of Morales left at least two officers dead, according to police.
Colombia’s government attributed the attacks to the FARC-EMC a rebel group that broke off from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia and refused to sign a 2016 peace deal in which more than 14,000 rebels demobilized.
COLOMBIA’S PRESIDENT SAYS HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PIECES OF AMMUNITION HAVE GONE MISSING FROM MILITARY BASES
The group’s western faction walked away from a new round of peace talks with the government in April and has since staged a series of attacks on military and police, including a roadside bomb last Friday that killed an 11-year-old.
Elizabeth Dickinson, a Colombia analyst at the International Crisis Group, said Monday’s attacks show that the EMC’s western faction is trying to set itself apart by becoming “the only armed or criminal group in Colombia that is directly attacking the state.”

Dickinson said the FARC-EMC’s western front, which is led by commander Ivan Mordisco, could end up splitting from EMC groups in eastern Colombia that are still involved in peace talks with the government.
“The split within the EMC is real and is likely to be permanent,” she said. “We are headed towards a situation of atomization and fragmentation in the conflict which has pretty dramatic implications for civilians.”
With around 5,000 fighters the EMC is the third-largest armed group in Colombia, behind the Gaitanista Self Defense Forces and the National Liberation Army.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro has tried to hold peace talks with Colombia’s remaining rebel groups since he was elected into office, under a strategy known as total peace.
The Petro administration has signed ceasefires with some of these groups and begun discussions on development programs and rural reforms.

Experts say the strategy has had mixed results.
While the ceasefires have reduced violence between the military and armed groups, crimes like kidnapping, extortion and the recruitment of children have increased as armed groups continue to strengthen their grip over rural communities and fight for the control of illegal businesses that were abandoned by the FARC after the peace deal. Rebel groups like the FARC-EMC also continue to profit from illegal mining and the drug trade.

Man gets 10 years in killing of 14-year-old Virginia boy
A Virginia man was sentenced to 10 years in prison Friday – far less than the life sentence he faced at trial last year – for the death of a 14-year-old boy.
Ismael Cruz-Delcid was 18 when he shot and killed Michai Malave in a hotel parking lot in Herndon in March 2024.
Michai was shot after he got off the school bus with a friend. The shooter left the scene and hid the gun but turned himself in the next day.
Prosecutors asked a jury to find Cruz-Delcid guilty of first-degree murder. Michai’s family wanted Cruz-Delcid sentenced to life in prison.
During last year’s trial, Cruz-Delcid’s defense attorney told a jury his client believed Michai was affiliated with a gang. Cruz-Delcid was in his car alone that day and, according to testimony, when Michai and a friend got off of the school bus, Cruz-Delcid got out of his car and confronted Michai. A fight quickly ended with gunfire.
Cruz-Delcid argued he shot Michai in self-defense. Michai was unarmed.
That trial ultimately ended with a hung jury. Prosecutors intended to retry the case but told the court Friday they had a witness who wouldn’t be able to testify at the trial, so prosecutors and the family felt it would be too risky to move forward without that witness.
“We kinda had to get ahead of it and offer this deal,” said Michai’s mother, Jenna Malave. “I wasn’t happy about it, but there was no part of me that can sit in a courtroom, and they have to drop the charges.”
Cruz-Delcid got a plea agreement and 10 years, instead.
“Well, Ismael should be facing life, we all know that, but I’ve made peace with it,” Malave said.
Michai’s father testified Friday at sentencing, telling the court his son was his best friend and that he will never be the same again.
Michai’s mother told the court that while she’s made peace with the result of the case, forgiveness is not part of the narrative today.
“I’m just ready for me and my daughter to be able to move on and try to heal without getting that Band-Aid ripped off again every few months,” she said.

Dallas Mavericks’ Anthony Davis facing possible season-ending surgery on hand
Dallas Mavericks star big man Anthony Davis might be facing season-ending left hand surgery after being injured in Thursday night’s game against the Utah Jazz, ESPN reported on Friday.
Davis reportedly underwent an MRI exam on Friday that showed ligament damage in the hand. Davis reportedly will seek a second opinion to see if surgery is needed.
ESPN reported Davis would miss at least six weeks if surgery is avoided.
Davis was injured with 2:52 left in the 116-114 loss while defending Utah star Lauri Markkanen on a drive to the basket. Davis was in obvious pain after the play and left the contest with 2:08 remaining after he was holding the hand and unable to defend Markkanen’s next basket.
The timing of the injury could affect Dallas’ trade plans. The club reportedly planned to shop Davis prior to the 5 February trade deadline.
Davis hasn’t even been with the Mavericks for a year yet. He came over in the controversial and disastrous deal in which star Luka Dončić was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Davis, who turns 33 in March, is making $54.1m this season. He is due to make $58.5m next season and has a player option for $62.8m in 2027-28.
Davis has played in just 29 games for the Mavericks – nine last season and 20 this season.
He is averaging 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds and 1.7 blocked shots this season. He is a 10-time All-Star.
