While the Atlanta Braves took the field at Truist Park for Wednesday night’s game against the San Francisco Giants, Major League Baseball was busy with its own work: Releasing the list of starters for the 2024 All-Star Game.
And when the list became finalized, the Braves were officially left without a starting position player for the first time since 2017.
Here’s a look at the National League starters …
C: William Contreras, Milwaukee Brewers
1B: Bryce Harper, Philadelphia Phillies
2B: Ketel Marte, Arizona Diamondbacks
SS: Trea Turner, Philadelphia Phillies
3B: Alec Bohm, Philadelphia Phillies
OF: Christian Yelich, Milwaukee Brewers; Jurickson Profar, San Diego Padres; Fernando Tatis Jr., San Diego Padres
DH: Shohei Ohtani, Los Angeles Dodgers
Last year the Braves set a franchise record with eight-total selections. They had three All-Star starters in catcher Sean Murphy, shortstop Orlando Arcia and outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr., while five others – first baseman Matt Olson, second baseman Ozzie Albies, third baseman Austin Riley and pitchers Spencer Strider and Bryce Elder – were selected as reserves.
Atlanta has several candidates to make the game this year, headlined by designated hitter Marcell Ozuna, starters Reynaldo Lopez, Chris Sale and Max Fried and reliever Jesse Chavez.
Of note, one NL starter – Contreras – has Braves ties, as the now-Milwaukee standout played in 153 games from 2020-22 for Atlanta, earning an All-Star nod in his final year. He was traded to the Brewers in Dec. 2022 as a part of a three-team trade that brought Murphy to Atlanta.
MLB All-Star reserves and pitchers will be announced at 5:30 p.m. ET Sunday on ESPN. The 2024 MLB All-Star game is scheduled for July 16 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

Beryl strands family in Jamaica
An Atlanta family’s vacation to Jamaica turned into a nightmare after Hurricane Beryl rolled through, stranding them on the island. Now they’re stuck at their resort with no power, and facing thousands in extra charges.
An Atlanta family’s dream vacation has turned into a nightmare after Hurricane Beryl stormed through Jamaica during their stay.
“They’re depressed, my kids are depressed,” said Atlanta mom Tawanda Jones.
She and five of her family members have been staying at the Jewel Grande resort in Montego Bay. Now they’ve been stranded in Jamaica by Beryl. Jones took video of flooding on their hotel room balcony as the storm barreled through the island Wednesday. And their resort has been without power ever since.
“It’s like 80 to 90 degrees in [our] room, and it’s scorching hot. Your nose is sweating, everything is sweating,” Jones said.
She says they’ve tried to leave the windows open to cool off the room, but mosquitoes then swarm inside.
“So we’re getting ate up, I tried to do that last night and I got so many bites on my legs, so I’m not doing that tonight, I’m not gonna do it,” Jones said.
She also shared video with us of a pitch black hotel room once the sun went down.
The family was supposed to fly back on July 4th, but Delta Air Lines canceled their flight and said the soonest they could rebook them was on Monday.
“And I told her I’m a registered nurse. I can’t be off of work this long and not be able to go back, and we have a special needs daughter with cerebral palsy and deaf, and we left her with someone to watch her while we were gone. And they have to go back to work,” Jones said.
To make matters worse, she says the resort is trying to charge them for the extra days they’re staying there.

“$176 per person and there’s six of us,” Jones said.
Jones feels she’s almost at her wit’s end.
“I didn’t budget that in…and the kids have nothing to do, and I’m worried about what they’re gonna be charging me in the end, I just can’t,” Jones said.
She said she’s still working to get an earlier flight back.

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The City of Atlanta is trying to tackle persistent water main breaks that continue to pop up.
Atlanta City Council members are days away from a meeting to discuss serious solutions.
On Friday, the Department of Watershed Management said it was investigating another potential water main incident off Woodland Avenue. The city said this incident could result in water disruption for residents and businesses in the area.
Service to several Buckhead apartment complexes was restored Thursday night following a water main break.
The city said that the break happened at the intersection of Lakeside Drive NE and Kingsboro Road NE.
About a month ago, a series of water main breaks in Atlanta disrupted water service, bringing businesses and simple everyday functions to a halt for some residents
But the city is hoping to address repairs and ongoing water issues.
The City Utilities Committee will hold a work session on water main break repairs on Tuesday, July 9.
The announcement also states during the work session the committee will discuss plans for preventing similar disruptions in the future.
