Irving Oil Tanker Truck crashes in Vt., leaks fuel into nearby stream

An Irving Oil Tanker Truck crashed Sunday morning in Alington, Vermont, prompting an emergency Hazmat response.

State police say the freightliner left Laver Road around 9:10 a.m. and rolled onto its side, leaking fuel into a nearby stream. The truck driver, identified as 54-year-old Michael J. Parker, of Whitehall, New York, suffered minor injuries in the crash.

The stream was dammed to prevent hazardous spillage from polluting nearby waterways, police said, and fuel was then pumped from the tanker truck until it was emptied, and the truck could be turned upright.

Teams remained on scene until the truck could be removed from the scene, and to clear the area of pollution by pumping out the contaminated water, police added.

It’s unclear what caused the semi to leave the roadway but police did note in their report that the road conditions were icy at the time.
