Pittsburgh Weather: Another 90-degree day expected, last of the year?
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – I reached out to the NWS local offices to double-check what their definition of a heat wave is. I was told and thought that Fred at the NWS had said three 90-degree days with no time temps falling below 70.

It’s not that simple and in fact, there are fall and spring heat waves that don’t even require 90-degree days.
Anyway, feel free to say this is a heat wave after hitting the 90-degree mark today.
Today should be the third 90-degree day in a row. If we hit the 90-degree mark it would be the fifth of the year and probably our last of the year.
Why do I say that?
Well, historically, while we have hit the 90s as late as October 4, the lion’s share of 90-degree days occur in June, July, and August.
The mean date for the last 90° day of the year is August 24 for Pittsburgh and records go all the way back to 1875. If you look at the time that records were kept at just the airport, the mean date is even earlier, coming in on August 16.
The latest 90° day at the airport falls on Sept 30 and that was all the way back in 1953.
Since 2000, the Pittsburgh area has hit the 90° mark just 11 times at or after today in the year. The last time we did that was in 2019.
Looking at the forecast, temperatures cool down Thursday and we continue to see temperatures at or below the seasonal averages for the rest of the week. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center predicts a strong chance for cooler-than-normal conditions will continue for the next two weeks before we start to see warmer-than-normal weather moving in for the last week of September.
It all comes together to give a high likelihood that the chance for the 90s after today is very low.
Back to today’s weather, hot and humid weather will give way to scattered storm chances for the evening. Evening storms may see a severe storm or two due to strong winds.
The storm chance continues tomorrow, and even though we are not included under the Thursday severe weather risk I think that will change with the chance for fast-moving storms continuing.
Highs today should hit the low 90s with lunchtime temperatures in the mid-80s.
While hot, it won’t be extremely humid to start the day but humidity levels should tick up throughout the day.

Insider: Russell Wilson’s Steelers Career in Jeopardy
Once heralded as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback solution, Russell Wilson’s recent fall from grace has some believing that his future with the team will be non-existent if they can’t topple the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
In an appearance on 93.7 The Fan’s The PM Team with Poni & Mueller, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk expressed his opinion that Wilson may be out of a job if the Steelers don’t pull through this weekend.
“If they lose this game on Saturday night, you think anyone wants Russell Wilson back next year?” Florio said.
Wilson’s tenure with Pittsburgh, after signing a one-year deal last March, got off on the wrong foot due to a calf injury he sustained at the beginning of training camp.
After being appointed the starter ahead of Justin Fields entering the regular season, he reaggravated his calf and missed the first six contests of the year.
It didn’t take long for Wilson to redeem himself, however, as the Steelers soared to a 10-3 record after the team went 6-1 over his first seven starts. During that stretch, he threw for 1,784 yards, 12 touchdowns and three interceptions.
In contrast, the final four contests of the campaign were a house of horrors for Pittsburgh. It went 0-4 and squandered its hold on the AFC North to Baltimore, dropping to the No. 6 seed in the AFC playoff picture in the process.
The Steelers were outscored 109-57 throughout their losing streak, and a fair amount of the blame for their shortcomings have been placed on Wilson’s shoulders. He eclipsed 150 passing yards just once over that span while taking 14 sacks and seemingly regressing across the board.
When asked if a poor showing versus the Ravens could spell the end of Wilson’s career, Florio agreed with that notion on the principle that no team would subsequently hand him a starting role on the open market and that he wouldn’t accept a deal as a backup.
“You’re right, because nobody’s gonna hand him a starting job, and he’s not gonna go the Joe Flacco route where he takes whatever spot he can on a depth chart,” Florio said. “He’ll walk away.”
With calls for Fields to get an extended look against the Ravens getting louder by the minute, Wilson is on thin ice as he tries to win back favor before he reaches free agency in the offseason.

Former Steelers Coach Scores Second HC Interview
Former Pittsburgh Steelers assistant coach Brian Flores has spearheaded one of the league’s best defenses as the Minnesota Vikings’ defensive coordinator, spawning interest from franchises with head coach openings.
The New York Jets were the first organization to officially request an interview with Flores this go-around. The Jacksonville Jaguars have also joined in on the party, however, as the team announced on their official Twitter account that they also intend on speaking with him.
Flores was a long-time member of the New England Patriots’ organization beginning in 2004, serving in a variety of different roles while helping the franchise secure four Super Bowl rings.
His most prominent position was as the team’s linebackers coach from 2016 to 2018, which was his last before being hired by the Miami Dolphins as their head coach in 2019.
In three seasons under Flores, the Dolphins went 24-25 and failed to reach the postseason. Despite the fact that the franchise had just begun the rebuilding process upon him coming on board and shown steady signs of progress, he was fired after the 2021 campaign.
Flores landed as a senior defensive assistant and linebackers coach with the Steelers for the 2022 season. His stint with the team was short-lived though, as Minnesota pried him away in February 2023.
This year, Flores’ unit held opponents to 19.5 points and 335.4 yards per contest. The Vikings are the No. 5 seed in the NFC playoff picture after posting a 14-3 record, falling just behind the Detroit Lions at 15-2 in the AFC North.
