Phillies win in 10 to punch playoff ticket
September 27 – Johan Rojas singled to center field with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning and the host Philadelphia Phillies clinched a playoff berth for the second consecutive season with a 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday.
Rojas had two hits and Brandon Marsh hit a solo home run for the Phillies (88-69).
“Once again, the word is incredible,” Rojas said on a postgame interview on NBC Sports Philadelphia. “What a moment. What a year. It was a great team effort.”
Phillies starter Aaron Nola pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed four hits and one run with eight strikeouts and no walks.
Jeff Hoffman (5-2) earned the win.
Henry Davis hit a home run and single and Bryan Reynolds added a homer for the Pirates (74-83).
Pirates starter Mitch Keller gave up three hits and two runs with six strikeouts and two walks in six innings. David Bednar (3-3) took the loss.
Davis hit a solo home run in the eighth inning off Craig Kimbrel to tie the game, 2-2.
Jose Alvarado retired the side in order in the ninth.
The Pirates had runners on second and third with two outs in the 10th and Hoffman struck out Davis on a slider.
Liover Peguero singled to right with two outs in the third for the Pirates’ first hit. It ended an 0-for-14 slump.
The Phillies went hitless through the first five innings though Bryce Harper walked twice.
Davis lined a single to left to open the sixth and Peguero hit into a 5-4-3 double play. Nola then struck out Ji-hwan Bae for his 200th of the season for the fifth time in his career.
Keller threw one pitch to Marsh to open the sixth but an apparent arm injury brought manager Derek Shelton and trainers to the mound.
Keller remained in the game and Marsh hit the next pitch over the fence in right center for a 1-0 lead, snapping an 0-for-17 skid. Harper added an RBI sacrifice fly to center for a 2-0 lead.
The Pirates closed within 2-1 in the seventh when Reynolds crushed his 24th homer of the season.

Former First-Round Pick Gets Revenge on Steelers
PITTSBURGH — Former Pittsburgh Steelers first-round pick Devin Bush got his revenge against his former team, winning the first of two matchups with the Cleveland Browns in the AFC North battle.
Bush was sent out for the coin toss to start the game, showing the Browns’ interest in making this a revenge atmosphere. The former 10th-overall for Pittsburgh didn’t get a second contract, and was booed out of town by fans after his fourth season. In his first AFC North showdown on the other side of the rivalry, he recorded six tackles for Cleveland.
Bush’s time with the Steelers started with a bang, and the star out of Michigan looked like the missing piece to Pittsburgh’s defense. He was viewed as the “finally” inside linebacker to replace Ryan Shazier, but after an ACL tear, things faded. By the time his final season wrapped up, he was on the bench as much as he was on the field, losing his job to Robert Spillane and Mark Robinson.
Last season, Bush signed a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks but didn’t do much in his one year in the NFC. This offseason, he visited the Browns, where he signed a deal shortly after. Now, despite a 3-8 record in Cleveland, he’s probably feeling pretty good as he walks away a winner in his first matchup against the Steelers in 2024.

New Houston Astros Trade Idea Buys Low On Embattled Pittsburgh Pirates Slugger
The Houston Astros need offensive help in the outfield and will need find a value-forward option in the trade market to do so.
One such player is Pittsburgh Pirates slugger Bryan De La Cruz.
He was a deadline addition last year for the Pirates and saw a sharp decline in play after the deal was made.
Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report now has De La Cruz as the most likely Pittsburgh player to be shipped out this winter.
That leaves the Astros open to swoop in and grab a player who still has a bit of potential for a low price. A possible deal between the two teams could see Houston send prospects Zach Cole and Jackson Nezuh to the Pirates in exchange for the struggling slugger.
De La Cruz posted a disappointing .200/220/.294 slash line over the final 44 games of the 2024 season. It may seem odd to trade for a guy coming off of such a cold stretch, but just a few months ago, he was on All-Star alert and on the verge of a potential 30-plus home run campaign.
Over the first 105 games of the year as a member of the Miami Marlins, he had a much better slash line of .245/.289/.417 with 18 home runs and 51 RBI.
He was one of the few players worth watching in the Marlins lineup this past season.
The 27-year-old debuted back in 2021 and still has a lot of room to grow. If The Astros can get his development turned back around into a positive direction, they could find a serious value with him.
Going back to Jake Meyers, Mauricio Dubon and Chas McCormick alongside Kye Tucker would simply not be acceptable for Houston next season, so they will need to be proactive in upgrading the lineup.
While they don’t have a ton of trade capital in their farm system, they could combine a couple of prospects to entice a team.
Cole is kind of the opposite of De La Cruz.
He’s an incredible defensive presence who can steal bases but doesn’t have much promise at the plate.
Even if the 24-year-old gets called up next year, that isn’t the type of player the Astros need right now.
Nezuh looksed solid in his first professional campaign with a 4.19 ERA and 11.3 K/9.
He is already looking more refined than he did in college, so Houston could do a quick flip of the prospect while the value is growing.
