City of Pittsburgh excited for economic impact of hosting 2026 NFL Draft

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — You call the city Picks-burgh. The NFL announced that the Steel City will be getting the 2026 draft.

The draft is expected to bring hundreds of thousands of people to the city. It’s something they’ve been planning for some time and are excited to see.

Some estimations have the draft bringing at least 300,000 people to Pittsburgh. This past April in Detroit, it brought 775,000.

“It’s going to be great. It’s going to be one of the biggest events the city has ever seen,” Strip District Business Association member Jim Coen said.

While the marquee is the player draft, there will be other events during that weekend. It’s estimated the city will see $120-160 million in revenue. According to Forbes, in 2023, Kansas City generated about $165 million, with more than 310,000 people attending the draft.

It’s hoped the money will flow beyond just the North Shore and Downtown.

“All through even the Strip District, you’re going to see activities,” said Sen. Wayne Fontana, a member of the Sports and Exhibition Authority.

We may have two years to wait, but it’s never too early to start planning.

Restaurants and businesses are now starting the process of finding the products they may need along with adjusting hours.

“Just brick by brick, to just get to those goals you want to reach in two years,” Redbeard’s Bar and Grille general manager Brent Kightlinger said.

While the draft will celebrate NFL players, the goal of hosting an event like this is to sell the city to tourists. For many people, this may be their first time here.

The work begins with promoting the attractions.

“They’re going to see our Cultural District. They’re going to know about our world-class museums [and] our renowned restaurants,” Sen. Fontana said over Zoom.

It’s expected any hotel near the North Shore or Downtown will be booked solid.

“Bringing all these others from other parts of the country and other parts of the world, once they see this city, they’re going to fall in love with it,” Coen said.

There will be plenty of prep work between now and then.

Four Steelers Stealing Show at Minicamp

Four Steelers Stealing Show at Minicamp

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers wrapped up mandatory minicamp or organized team activities this week at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex and the makings of a strong squad are clear with some stars emerging from the fray.

After four weeks of practices, Nick Herbig, Jaylen Warren, Van Jefferson and Calvin Austin III have looked like they are ready to lift the Steelers with massive seasons after strong starts in preseason practices. As the offense looks for a bonafide No. 2 option next to George Pickens and the running game figures to feature prominently, Warren, Jefferson and Austin making strides are critical for the Steelers.

But there are some off-the-field topics that had to be addressed. Najee Harris was absent for the first day of minicamp with approval from head coach Mike Tomlin. Then he spent the next two days on the sidelines as a non-participant. Whether or not this relates to Harris’ contract situation is unclear but Steelers general manager Omar Khan said that the team is still open to possibly signing Harris to a long-term deal, despite declining to pick up his fifth-year contract extension.

The Steelers head into a break now but the news never stops. There are still plenty of preparations to make and details to sort out before they arrive at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania to get their 2024 season underway.

Dak Prescott Will Be the Pittsburgh Steelers Franchise Quarterback in 2025

Dak Prescott Will Be the Pittsburgh Steelers Franchise Quarterback in 2025

It seems as if Dak Prescott will be no longer on the Dallas Cowboys after 2024. With Prescott set to be a free agent, there is one team that will make the ideal fit for him and make him their franchise quarterback. That team is the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Prescott has been able to provide quality play over his career so far, with 29,459 yards and 202 touchdowns. There are inconsistencies in Prescott’s game from time to time, but overall, he has shown his capabilities as a high-level player in the NFL that has done a good job of elevating the talent around him as well.

For the Steelers, they need that kind of quarterback. After two seasons of mediocre play from Pickett, they turned to bringing in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields for the season. Wilson is turning 36, and while he’s coming off a better season with the Denver Broncos, it is still one where he put up 3,070 yards, and 26 touchdowns. Very average numbers, it won the Broncos games, but kept them at a ceiling.

With Justin Fields, he has the athleticism to uplift an offense and provide a different dynamic. The thing with Fields is his decision-making and instincts leave room to be questioned heavily with some of the choices he makes. Fields has the rushing ability and is a lot younger to operate the offense, but those flaws are hard to instill confidence in him fully.

With Prescott, he has shown the ability to make better decisions while also having more rushing upside. With a receiver room of at least George Pickens, and Roman Wilson, it would arguably be the highest upside wide receiver duo Prescott has played with. Prescott would then be able to uplift the rest of the offensive talent further with his ability to diagnose defenses and get the best out of his teammates. Prescott is the ideal quarterback to fit the Steelers’ offensive system and become their franchise quarterback.
