UMass Lowell Poll Shows N.H. Republicans Prefer Trump and Support Right to Abortion – WHAV

With the New Hampshire presidential primary coming up this month, UMass Lowell’s Center for Public Opinion and YouGov poll results show former President Donald Trump holds a commanding lead for the Republican party’s nomination in the 2024 race for the White House, with former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley in a not-so-close second – she trails by 30 points.

Of 450 likely New Hampshire Republican primary voters surveyed, 52% would vote for Trump, while 22% signaled they would vote for Haley, who once served as Trump’s U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and was recently endorsed in the race by N.H. Gov. Chris Sununu.

“The poll results throw cold water on any traction Haley thought she had,” said UMass Lowell’s John Cluverius, the center’s director of survey research and an associate professor of political science. “Despite an endorsement from Sununu–whom the poll found enjoys an 80% favorability rating among respondents–and her attempt to thread the needle on abortion, she can’t seem to close the deal.”

Against Haley, Trump leads in every demographic category, and she fares worse among female respondents than male, he added.

Candidates trailing behind include Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, 10%; former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, 6%; entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, 4%; and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, 1%.

The survey was conducted from Thursday, Dec. 7, through Monday, Dec. 18, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 5.4 percentage points. The first-in-the-nation N.H. primary election is Tuesday, Jan. 23.

The same poll shows voters divided on the Israel-Hamas conflict. Exactly half somewhat or strongly support the Republican nominee calling for an immediate ceasefire, while 50% somewhat or strongly oppose it. On providing U.S. aid to Israel, 46% of respondents somewhat  or strongly support it, while 54% say they somewhat or strongly oppose it.

As the Russian invasion of Ukraine nears its second anniversary, 66% of respondents say they somewhat or strongly oppose additional assistance, while 34% of respondents somewhat or strongly support it. However, voters in the sample still view Vladimir Putin negatively, with 76% holding an unfavorable view of the Russian president and 5% holding a favorable view.

Among respondents who identify as Republicans, 64% say there should be a right to get an abortion in every state.

Among poll respondents, 64% would back a constitutional amendment prohibiting candidates aged 75 or older from holding federal office. If reelected, Trump would be 78 on Inauguration Day, while Biden would be 82.

“When people stay in roles well into their 70s, they become ‘blockers’ to the next generation of leaders,” said UMass Lowell’s Catherine Rymsha, an authority on succession and talent management who is a visiting faculty lecturer in the university’s Manning School of Business.

The nonpartisan poll was independently funded by the University of Massachusetts Lowell, which has more than 16,000 students, alumni and employees from the Granite State. The survey was designed and analyzed by the university’s Center for Public Opinion and fielded by YouGov.

Woman charged with driving under the influence, airlifted to hospital after crash on I-93

A woman was charged with driving under the influence and airlifted to the hospital after a crash on Interstate 93 in New Hampshire early Saturday, according to police.

Amanda B. Webber, 28, was allegedly driving a Jeep Renegade around 2:15 a.m. Saturday when the car went off the left side of I-93 just before the exit 23 off-ramp in New Hampton, struck an embankment and rolled over multiple times before coming to a rest in the median, New Hampshire State Police said in a statement.

State police received an automated crash notification from the area. Other drivers made additional calls about the collision a short time later as well, according to state police’s statement.

Webber was evaluated by the New Hampton Fire Department before she was airlifted to Concord Hospital to be treated for her injuries, which were later determined to not be life-threatening, the statement said.

I-93 was shut down in the area for roughly 30 minutes to make way for the medical helicopter’s arrival and landing, according to state police.

During the investigation into the circumstances of the crash, authorities detected indicators Webber was allegedly impaired. She was subsequently arrested and charged with driving under the influence, state police said.

“While driver impairment and excessive speed appear to be the leading causes of the crash, all aspects remain under investigation,” state police noted.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or who has information that could help with the investigation is asked to contact state police Trooper Zachary Bilotta at zachary.t.bilotta@dos.nh.gov or the State Police Communications Center at (603) 223-4381.

Sen. Altschiller: When will NH finally take action on gun violence prevention?

This next week, I hope New Hampshire Senate Republicans choose to pass House Bill 1711. Otherwise, they can name this past session “Opportunities Squandered,” as they will have once again blocked all efforts towards gun violence prevention.

HB 1711 was filed in direct response to the shooting that took place at New Hampshire Hospital in 2023, and it authorizes the state to report mental health data that will be cited in firearms background checks. Further, it establishes processes for confiscation of firearms following certain mental health-related court proceedings. HB 1711 is vitally important, and frankly, something we should have passed before the shooting at New Hampshire Hospital took place. This week, Senate Republicans serving on the Judiciary Committee voted it down.

When the mass murder in Lewiston, Maine, happened, Republican legislators seemed to have woken up momentarily — there were some wringing of hands, thoughts, prayers and then — nothing. So far this year, there have been 150 mass shootings in America, but that is not the only kind of gun violence we face. We often think of gun violence only through the lens of high casualty events; of calamities like what took place in Lewiston, Sandy Hook, or Uvalde, but the reality of gun violence is perversely so much more.

In New Hampshire, just this year, we have had shootings in Rochester, Manchester and Berlin. A credible threat to “shoot up” Portsmouth High School last year was thankfully interrupted, and the perpetrator is behind bars. Another threat in Lebanon was interrupted. Our students and teachers have faced dozens of lockdowns.

Gun violence in New Hampshire is real.

Amidst all this chaos, we also have a suicide epidemic in the Granite State. Within our state, 88% of all firearm deaths are suicides, while the national average is 67%. It is a known fact that the availability of firearms makes someone’s attempt at suicide exponentially more likely to result in their death than when attempting suicide by other means.

We also have instances of domestic violence where an individual uses a gun to intimidate and control their partner, accidental gun discharges that result in death and injury, and children living in homes where safe storage is not practiced. These tragedies happen all too often in the Granite State.

So, what have we done as legislators to address gun violence in New Hampshire?

In 2024, I filed and fought for three bills to mitigate gun violence in our state. One bill to implement extreme risk protection orders (SB 360), one to require a background check prior to any commercial firearm sale (SB 571), and one to impose a waiting period between the purchase and delivery of a firearm (SB 577). I was happy to join my Senate colleague, Sen. Donovan Fenton, on the effort to create gun free school zones (SB 593), and join with my House colleague, Rep. David Meuse, on a bill to establish a voluntary waiver of the right to purchase a firearm (HB 1050) and one to repeal limited liability for manufacturers, distributors, dealers, or importers of firearms or ammunition (HB 1037). All of these bills have been rejected by the Republicans in both the House and Senate. They have staunchly refused to join us in any efforts of gun violence prevention.

We are about to close the chapter on our ability to bring forward legislation until 2025. I am deeply disappointed, incredulous actually, that almost every single effort to address gun violence in New Hampshire has been thwarted, save HB 1711.

HB 1711 had strong bipartisan support in the House and showed that it is possible to balance the rights of the Second Amendment and the right of individuals to live safely in their communities. But this past Wednesday, the Senate Judiciary Republicans recommended this bill be voted down like all of the others.

Next week, when the bill comes to the floor, will the other eleven Republican Senators recognize the vital need for this bill and vote to pass it? We are anxiously awaiting to see who courageously joins this bipartisan, bicameral bill to address this gap in our current law. Stay tuned.

Gun violence prevention takes work; gun violence doesn’t just go away on its own.

I hope that as we head towards the summer, Granite Staters’ days are full of community events, family gatherings, and celebrating the common ground of our core values. I sincerely hope the tragedy that took place at New Hampshire Hospital never happens again. I believe in us, and I believe we can change for the better. HB 1711 would be that positive change we need to make our communities safer. I hope that all of my colleagues in the Senate recognize this next week, and vote with me to pass HB 1711.

Debra Altschiller, D-Stratham, is the New Hampshire state senator for District 24 in the Seacoast.

MANCHESTER, NH — Despite jumping out to a 3-0 lead, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (12-18) lost to the Harrisburg Senators (18-12) at Delta Dental Stadium, 4-3, on Friday night. The Cats knocked 11 hits but went 3-for-10 on the night with runners in scoring position.

Fisher Cats starter C.J. Van Eyk struck out six batters in five scoreless innings, his longest appearance of the season. Friday marked his first five-inning start since October 20, 2023, in the Arizona Fall League.

New Hampshire knocked Harrisburg starter Kyle Luckham (W, 2-1) for three runs on nine hits in six innings. Senators relievers Garvin Alston, Jack Sinclair and Tyler Schoff (S, 3) combined for the final scoreless three innings.

Right-hander Trent Palmer (L, 1-3) entered in the top of the sixth and gave up four runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings pitched. Righty Nick Fraze made his 2024 Fisher Cats debut out of the bullpen and tossed 2 2/3 innings scoreless, only allowing one hit. Fraze hasn’t allowed an earned run since April 24, when he was with Triple-A Buffalo

Outfielder Devonte Brown went 3-for-4 on the night; he’s now hitting .413 over seven games in May. First baseman Rainer Nuñez clubbed his first triple of the season in a two-hit night. Shortstop Josh Kasevich also ripped two hits.

New Hampshire took an early lead in the bottom of the second thanks to four straight singles. Brown started the chain, then designated hitter Zach Britton, left fielder Gabriel Martinez and Nuñez followed. Martinez’s base hit brought in Brown, then Britton scored on a ground ball from catcher Phil Clarke. The Cats led 2-0 at the inning’s end.

Three more singles brought a Fisher Cats run across in the third. Kasevich singled to right, then second baseman Michael Turconi went the same way. Brown hit a chopper up the middle off the glove of Harrisburg infielder Jordy Barley and Kasevich hustled home from second to make it 3-0.

The Cats had one last gasp in the bottom of the ninth but came up short. Third baseman Riley Tirotta’s singled with one out in the ninth to extend his on-base streak to 10 games, the longest of any Fisher Cats batter this season.

Friday night’s Margaritaville Night brought 4,991 fans out to Delta Dental Stadium. The Fisher Cats’ Margaritaville Night game-worn jerseys are still up for auction through Sunday night at MiLBAuctions.com.

Saturday marks the fifth of six games between New Hampshire and Harrisburg with first pitch scheduled for 4:05 PM EDT.

New Hampshire’s team leader in strikeouts (31) Trenton Wallace (1-0, 1.59 ERA) takes the hill for the Fisher Cats, as they take the field as the Manchester Chicken Tendes for the first time in 2024. The Senators send right-handed pitcher Michael Cuevas (1-1, 3.42 ERA) to the bump for his sixth start.

The Fisher Cats are scheduled to play 69 home games in 2024 at Delta Dental Stadium. After New Hampshire’s upcoming series in Hartford against the Yard Goats, the Fisher Cats return to Delta Dental Stadium to host the Somerset Patriots in a seven-game series, beginning on Tuesday, May 21.
