Maryland governor signs Biden-inspired bill establishing 'Center for Firearm Violence Prevention'

Democratic Maryland governor Wes Moore signed a bill establishing the first statewide gun violence prevention center earlier this week.

The project, which is called the Center for Firearm Violence Prevention and Intervention, will operate within the Maryland Department of Health. Its mission is to “consolidate and better coordinate Maryland’s public health approach to preventing gun violence,” according to a press release published by the governor’s office on Thursday.

“The center will partner with local governments, advocates, and medical professionals engaged in violence intervention programs to build upon the critical gun violence intervention programs that were pioneered in Maryland and help ensure that they are adequately funded and informed by the best available data,” the statement explained.

Moore follows in the footsteps of President Biden, who established the Office of Gun Violence Prevention in September 2023. The Old Line State is the first to adopt a statewide agency against gun violence, Moore said.

“Maryland became the first state in the nation to officially answer President Biden’s call,” the governor told reporters.

Moore also signed the Growing Apprenticeships and the Public Safety Workforce (GAPS) Act, which is aimed at better funding police departments in the state.

“With police departments across the state facing challenges with hiring and retaining officers, the bill proposes short and long-term actions to help address the problem by reforming the existing apprenticeship model for public safety officials – with the goal of making apprenticeships a more viable pathway to law enforcement, and requiring the establishment of a model policy for law enforcement officer wellness programs to ensure officers receive the support they need in their often challenging work,” the statement explains.

The laws come as Baltimore continues to be ravaged by crime. According to the Baltimore Police Department’s website, there have been more than 1,800 aggravated assaults and 1,200 robberies since 2024 began. In addition, there have been 155 shootings and 62 homicides this year.

“When we entered office, we made public safety our number one priority, and we said we were going to move differently on this issue – because the status quo wasn’t working,” a statement from Moore read. “Today, we make Maryland safer by signing bills to support victims, build stronger pipelines to law enforcement jobs, and tackle the gun violence epidemic, head-on.”

“We’re making progress, but our work is far from done. Together, we will continue to take an all-of-the-above approach to public safety.”

Vermont leaders warn of ‘hateful, threatening rhetoric’ in rural development debate – The Boston Globe


The Democratic and Republican leaders of the Vermont House said Wednesday that a pitched debate over new development rules for rural land has led to a rise in “hateful” and “demonizing” messages targeting state legislators.

“These personal, threatening attacks are unacceptable anywhere, and especially in Vermont, where we have a long history of civil debate and respectful dialogue,” wrote House Speaker Jill Krowinski, a Democrat, and House Minority Leader Pattie McCoy, a Republican.

The unusual joint statement comes as legislators work to unravel a two-year-old law that would subject development near ecologically sensitive areas — as well as some new roads and driveways — to greater regulatory scrutiny. Opposition to the law, known as Act 181, has grown into what some have described as a rural rebellion, with potential electoral ramifications this fall.

Krowinski and McCoy wrote that it was healthy and important to debate the law, and that legislators had listened: The House and Senate recently voted to remove the most controversial provisions from Act 181, and Gov. Phil Scott, a Republican, is expected to sign those changes into law.

But the leaders said that some had taken the debate too far and targeted an architect of the law, Representative Amy Sheldon, with “truly reprehensible” emails and social media posts.

Conor Kennedy, Krowinski’s chief of staff, provided an array of screenshots showing people calling Sheldon, the Democratic chair of the House Environment Committee, a Nazi, a dictator, a “retarded meatpuppet” and more.

“Step on my grass and one of us will die,” one self-described Vermonter wrote.

According to Kennedy, each of the comments originated with a 15,000-member Facebook group known as Rural Vermont Rising, which has served as a key organizing tool for the anti-Act 181 movement.

Colleen Geddis, who created the group, said Wednesday that she and her fellow moderators had banned personal attacks and harassment from the page and sought to root out and remove offending comments.

“We try to police it, but there’s only so much you can do on social media,” she said. “It’s not the way to get things done, and we know that.”

Political debate in Vermont tends to be more civil than elsewhere, perhaps due to its small size, tradition of local governance and citizen legislature. But certain subjects have led to overheated rhetoric in recent decades, including debates over civil unions in 2000 and gun rights in 2018.

Sheldon, who was first elected to the House in 2014, said she had never witnessed as much vitriol as with the debate over Act 181. Though she steers clear of social media, she said, she had received “veiled threats” and, at times, felt physically unsafe.

“I get that land use laws touch on property rights, and that’s a thorny issue,” she said. “I think we responded to legitimate pushback, but it’s not stopping. It’s like, ‘We met you halfway,’ and it’s unrelenting.”

LinkedIn has released its 2026 top companies list for Boston, highlighting the employers it says offer workers the strongest opportunities for career growth in the region.

The annual ranking, based entirely on LinkedIn data, evaluates companies on factors tied to career advancement, including skill development and promotion. To qualify, companies needed at least 250 global employees with at least 100 located in the city as of Dec. 31, 2025.

Healthcare, life sciences, and finance companies dominated this year’s list, underscoring the industries that continue to shape Greater Boston’s economy.

CVS Health claimed the top spot on the ranking, followed by Mass General Brigham and Boston-based Vertex Pharmaceuticals. 

Financial firms Fidelity Investments and State Street also landed in the top 10, alongside healthcare and research institutions including Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

LinkedIn said the rankings reflect Boston’s status as a major hub for biotech and healthcare innovation.

“The list is more than a ranking — it’s a snapshot of the world of work in Boston right now,” LinkedIn wrote in the report.

The company said its methodology measures workplace growth using data on employee advancement, skill growth, external opportunities, and company stability. Unlike LinkedIn’s national Top Companies ranking, the Boston list focuses specifically on activity within the local metro area.

Several companies on the list stood out for specialized skills in growing industries.

At Vertex Pharmaceuticals, the most notable employee skills included pharmaceutical manufacturing, pathology, and nanotechnology, while Liberty Mutual Insurance highlighted expertise in artificial intelligence engineering and software development.

Amazon, which rounded out the list at No. 10, was recognized for skills tied to AI engineering, mobile application development, and linguistics.

The report also identified some of the most common jobs at each company. Research roles were among the most common positions at Mass General Brigham, while software engineer positions appeared frequently at Fidelity Investments, Liberty Mutual, and Amazon.
